Feminists across the UK have "defaced" statues by dressing them in T-shirts containing the dictionary definition of the word woman .More details here.

Trans rights groups are calling this a hate crime. I hate to sound like such an old fogie but this it sounds like political correctness gone mad! How is this offensive? What's so offensive about the word woman I don't understand!

I don't disagree that black can be used as an insult and as a way to discriminate against people in a horrible way.

Using the word woman to keep out from certain spaces people who are not women is not at all the same thing. I actively want to keep people out of my changing room who are not women. I do not want to keep people out who are not white. The former is a valid basis for segregation. The latter is not.

was an answer for those appearing flummoxed about how the word black can be offensive

Yes, this.

easyandy101 · 29/01/2019 12:23

ftr: I don't support self id

I think just calling yourself a woman massively undermines what it means to be a woman

I just get pissed off with seemingly intelligent people saying things like "oh it's offensive to call someone black now is it"

I wasn't trying to compare the 2 things, just point out that playing dumb like that just makes you sound stupid

GlitterStick · 29/01/2019 12:33

Same, @easyandy101

ratchethandler · 29/01/2019 12:41

Well, adult human males are not adult human females are they.

No they're not CallMeSirShotsFired. They never will be, and all the deft, identity politics codswallop in the world will change the fact.

Of course it will be insisted upon that we have to say otherwise.

ratchethandler · 29/01/2019 12:57

won't change the fact.. oops

drspouse · 29/01/2019 13:03

Males appropriating words as the fancy takes them; and telling the rightful "owners" of that word to get fucked is what's hostile here.

Exactly.
If you take away our definition of us, yes we will make a fuss.

ratchethandler · 29/01/2019 13:13

hear hear

InTheNightBakery · 29/01/2019 13:14

I not only object to the definition of woman being made offensive but also to why it's only the category of 'female' up for grabs, as if it's insignificant and free for anyone to use.

"Adult human female" - no-one seems to be up for the 'adult' or 'human' parts being available for change - if I identify as a 3 year old and want to be let into the local nursery or identify as a dodo and demand recognition I can't see anyone supporting me but why not? If the biological truth of the 'female' part is up for change then why not the other parts? Why can't I have a 4 year old brain or a dodo brain inside my body? We're never going to get a good answer on that are we? Angry

ratchethandler · 29/01/2019 13:19

On a similar note, try asking a trans' advocate : Why it is considered perfectly acceptable for a man to claim he can become a woman but not for a white person to claim they can become black ?

The pseudo-scientific nonsense they come back with is usually hilarious.

How so?

Censorship, I see!

Simply for telling the truth. God forbid!

NatashaRomanov · 29/01/2019 13:51

Do MNHQ not message you and let you know why your post was removed?
That's irritating.
And the link to talk 'guidelines' is no use, as it doesn't say which guideline you have offended against!

Unless saying "Some TRAs" and "Some Transwomen" is considered transphobic?

Does anyone know if I will get a response if I send a message to MNHQ?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/01/2019 13:53

natasha

They usually reply

But only to the person whose post was deleted as far as im aware

ratchethandler · 29/01/2019 13:55

You'll get the same old generalised blather about how naughty it is to offend the gobby, leftist whinge bags that dominate this site .

User758172 · 29/01/2019 13:56

Do MNHQ not message you and let you know why your post was removed?

Nope.

User758172 · 29/01/2019 13:58

@ratchethandler

Thanks for letting me know! Grin

easyandy101 · 29/01/2019 13:59

How so?

Because in terms of historical context there's alot more to being a woman than just wearing a dress and a bit of lippy.

I don't have any problem at all with trans people but that's what they are, also another historically persecuted underclass, but that doesn't confer membership to whatever group you've decided to identify as

Onlyjoinedforthisthread · 29/01/2019 14:18

The word black wasn't suggested as a comparison to the word woman as how a word can be offensive or weaponise. It was posted as an example of how a word can be weaponised when a previous poster asked how is it possible to weaponise a word. It was a simple example to show that a word can be used as a weapon

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 29/01/2019 14:26

Yes i asked the weaponised question and thats the answer given

I agree it wasn't meant to be a comparison

NatashaRomanov · 29/01/2019 14:28

Thanks @Rufusthebewilderedeeindeer and @ratchethandler
Now to figure out how to message them!

GerryblewuptheER · 29/01/2019 14:33

I think any word can be weaponised really.

However woman appears to be one of the very few that even when in absolute correct context, is deemed offensive. With nothing else attached to it. It's appearance even in.medical literature is exclusive and offensive and driving people to hurt themselves.

But it's ok for women to be hurt when they have no idea something is referring to them. Cervix havers for example. That requires knowing you have one. We need to know who it applies to.

Why can't the word just be used alongside other words . Then everyone knows who is being talked about and everyone understands
