Neighbours dog has just attacked me and DD.

Have had issues with them in the past

They are elderly, with two large breed dogs (think Great Danes?). They cannot control them. Honestly the amount of times I have seen them nearly pull them over in the street/simply pull out of their grasp and go bouncing off and jumping all over people is untrue.

Was walking back from the shop and saw them coming from a distance so I stepped to the side into another neighbours driveway and next thing I know- one of them had pulled out of its owners grasp and came bounding over and knocked DD (who is just about getting confident with her toddling) over.

It was over in seconds- by the time I put the break on the pram (was stood on a slopes drive so it would of ran off into the road) and went to grab DD she was already on the floor the dog barking at her- so I kicked it to get it away, and it bit my leg.

I was furious. Owner very embarrassed an apologetic but I’ve said enough is enough and I would be contacting the police and the RSPCA.

Heaven forbid it bounded on the pram and just decided to bite my 2 week old. It would of taken her head off no doubt.

V shaken and waiting for DH to get home to call the police and RSPCA.

I’ve also messaged his daughter on Facebook

Wordthe more people die from warp and bee stings as well as kicks and tramplings by cows and horses, would you like to exterminate these species before or after you start on dogs?

Wordthe · 27/01/2019 21:47

Booboo
Stop comparing dogs to humans
dogs are not like humans, they are predatory animals

Booboostwo · 27/01/2019 21:48

wordthe i am not sure how swimming pools, which are responsible for a considerable number of drownings especially of children, are an inevitable fact of life!

Booboostwo · 27/01/2019 21:49

Wordthe yes humans are capable of reason, although sometimes I wonder if that claim is a philosophical affectation.

EustaciaVye · 27/01/2019 21:49

This thread is a perfect example of why the internet is so emotionally draining at times.

Glad the child is ok. Glad the dog is ok. Glad the OP is ok. I hope the digs get rehomed to somewhere they can be controlled properly and the child doesn't end up scared of dogs in the future.

Wolfiefan · 27/01/2019 21:49

@Legumewaffle not true.
The law says that a person only has to say they felt intimidated by a dog or afraid it may hurt them to have it labelled out of control. By law the dog doesn’t have to bite.
This dog was out of control.

Wordthe · 27/01/2019 21:49

I have never encountered any problems with horses cars wasps or bees in an urban environment
I'm continually inconvenienced, scared, and have been attacked by dogs in an urban environment

Wordthe · 27/01/2019 21:49

Cows not cars

ChakiraChakra · 27/01/2019 21:49

If you are never around dogs, if you are scared to death by them, (you couod also add SN, disabilities etc etc), then ‘learning’ those skills might well be beyond what some people can do.

I realise this comment isn't addressed towards me but it had made me laugh. Everything you've mentioned this thread, I genuinely have either qualifications in, have researched academically or have direct experience with doing 😂 I literally teach people who have good reason to be afraid of an animal much bigger than a dog, the means to not let that stop them from doing what they want to do. I do this work with people who have SEN and learning difficulties.

It's possible. I understand that individuals may have no desire to, or know how to access the resources that facilitate it, but it's definitely possible.

you're unwittingly helping me to assimilate several threads of what I do and how they fit together, by posting on here, so thank you very much l, I deeply appreciate your words in totally unexpected ways :)

VaselineDion · 27/01/2019 21:50

Wordthe Do you not read the news? There are a huge number of predatory humans, more than dogs. But you keep living in your bubble.

What is it about people that can't deal with dogs that gets on your wick @Aquilla?

luckylavender · 27/01/2019 21:55

And @Aquilla - people like you really really get on my nerves.

Deadbudgie · 27/01/2019 21:55

Well bugger me, humans not predators, would never harm a person I’ve heard it all now! And somewhat stupid especially on world holoccaust day.

echt · 27/01/2019 22:04

Well, Aquilla, what an extraordinary point of view. You really let dog-owners down with your attitude.

The OP took defensive action by seeking to avoid the dogs, and her instinctive defence of her child was entirely fine. All blame lies with the owners.

Willow2017 · 27/01/2019 22:05

People who can't deal with dogs really get on my wick. And I'm talking about you, OP. You deserved to be bitten and seriously, toddlers get 'knocked over' at the drop of a hat

People shouldnt have to 'deal' with other peoples out of control dogs in the first place. Its not my job to teach someone elses dog how to behave nor accept their crappy owners excuses.

No toddlers do not get knocked over by 10 stone dogs bounding over to them knocking them flying every day what kind of world do you live in? A huge dog could do serious damage to a toddler ffs. Op shouldnt have to protect her child from random dogs who are untrained and out of control.

NicolaStart · 27/01/2019 22:06

Right.

What is the right way to deal with a massive dog that you don’t know, and who doesn’t know you, who is standing over your small toddler (presumably screaming and waving arms) barking?

What is the ideal course of action ?

PurpleAndTurquoise · 27/01/2019 22:07

Aquilegia I don't need to learn how to deal with dogs as no dog should be running up to me. They should stay with their owners or be on a lead.

On another point I think now people are aware of how much keeping a pet contributes to climate change, pets will become less common.

OP it sounds very scary. My teenage kids are terrified of dogs due to getting bowled over like skittles when they were toddlers. It was horrifying, they dog was twice their size and barking and barking.
I hope you and your toddler recover from the incident.

SusieOwl4 · 27/01/2019 22:10

This is the most sensible comment on here #

MrMeSeeks · 27/01/2019 22:10

dog that has a brain tumour, either it will be known by the owner or will have shown changes in his behaviour.
Hmm but a dog with a brain tumour would have sudden changes and they would have to start somewhere, the owners obviously wouldn't know right away Hmm

MrMeSeeks · 27/01/2019 22:12

Right so is it only things that have inconvenienced you that you want rid of then?
I’ve had problems with cars, wasps and bees yet don't want to get rid of them, i also wouldn't call a dog a predator Hmm

my god this fucking thread

missbattenburg · 27/01/2019 22:27

my god this fucking thread

Isn't it depressing? An example of why humankind is surely doomed. Two sides spitting vitriol at each other without any interest in listening to each other.

The single most important skill for any social animal to hold is that of compromise. Seems humans do not possess it so it can only be a matter of time before it destroys us.

Presumably dogs, cats, horses and wasps will outlive us.

Yabbers · 27/01/2019 22:27

DD is terrified of dogs. If this had happened to her I would be incredibly angry. I would never have kicked the dog though. I'd have scooped her up and moved her away.

They didn't attack you or her. They knocked her over and retaliated when you kicked them.

You clearly don't like them so this must seem like a wonderful chance to do something about that.
