Neighbours dog has just attacked me and DD.

Have had issues with them in the past

They are elderly, with two large breed dogs (think Great Danes?). They cannot control them. Honestly the amount of times I have seen them nearly pull them over in the street/simply pull out of their grasp and go bouncing off and jumping all over people is untrue.

Was walking back from the shop and saw them coming from a distance so I stepped to the side into another neighbours driveway and next thing I know- one of them had pulled out of its owners grasp and came bounding over and knocked DD (who is just about getting confident with her toddling) over.

It was over in seconds- by the time I put the break on the pram (was stood on a slopes drive so it would of ran off into the road) and went to grab DD she was already on the floor the dog barking at her- so I kicked it to get it away, and it bit my leg.

I was furious. Owner very embarrassed an apologetic but I’ve said enough is enough and I would be contacting the police and the RSPCA.

Heaven forbid it bounded on the pram and just decided to bite my 2 week old. It would of taken her head off no doubt.

V shaken and waiting for DH to get home to call the police and RSPCA.

I’ve also messaged his daughter on Facebook

Sounds out of character for Great Danes.

Would have been better picking DD up and moving her away but if this happened as described fair enough re police I suppose.

PoliticalBiscuit · 27/01/2019 18:57

I understand either of those scenarios are intimidating and showed an unacceptable out of control dog.

Im just curious.

amy85 · 27/01/2019 18:58

You kicked a dog and then it bit you...big shock!!!
It didn't attach your dd over it accidentally knocked over a just walking (by the sounds of it) toddler... yes it's owners should have been in control of the dog...but exaggerating won't help

RavenMaven · 27/01/2019 18:58

Bold fail and autocorrect fun. Hope you got the gist

EyesUnderARock · 27/01/2019 18:58

The dog was not under control and bounded over to you. You didn’t provoke it, you protected your children, probably without thinking.
Phone 101, take photos of any marks.
If the dog had been under control, it would have walked past the OP and ignored her.

Lockheart · 27/01/2019 18:58

As scary an experience as it no doubt was, the dog didn’t attack you. It was out of control and came up to you, knocked your daughter over, and only bit when you kicked it.

The owners clearly shouldn’t have such large dogs, and you are right to report it, but it sounds like these dogs are just big and poorly trained, not aggressive and dangerous.

OneStepSideways · 27/01/2019 18:58

Ok, I take it you live for drama and from the start it is clear you do not like the dogs. You clearly state in the beginning that the dogs will jump on people probably out of excitement. You clearly have your own agenda but that is just my opinion

It's a criminal offence for a dog to be out of control in a public place. That includes overexcited dogs that jump on people. If a dog knocked my toddler over and didn't retreat I would kick it too! What mother wouldn't, especially with a newborn in a pram! Most overexcited dogs will back off if confronted with aggression, not bite.

The owners could be prosecuted for this and the dogs seized and destroyed. I hope OP presses charges.

katkat90 · 27/01/2019 18:59

Bite has broken my skin but has torn a hole in my tracksuit bottoms. It got my trousers more than it got me but if I’m honest it’s not the point.

I wouldn’t of kicked the dog if I hadn’t seen it and it’s sibling misbehave with people in the past. I’m honestly surprised they still have ownership.

Have to wait for DH as no phone credit- forgot to top up while I was at the shop Angry

Call the police and seek medial attention asap. My dad was bitten by a dog last year, he was in hospital for 3 weeks as it cased an infection and then sepsis. Not saying that to scare you but in hope that you'll get it looked at it

dancinfeet · 27/01/2019 18:59

sorry but if a dog knocked either of my daughter's over and barked aggressively I would give it a good kick as well, and my daughters are teenagers and I like (well behaved) dogs!
OP you must have been frightened, ring the police, clearly the owners cannot control them. There is no excuse, the bloody thing should not have been bounding around and the owners are reckless and stupid keeping dogs that they have no control of.

katkat90 · 27/01/2019 18:59

Hasn’t broken the skin that was meant to be. Bloody phone

Hoppinggreen · 27/01/2019 19:00

Great Danes aren’t usually aggressive but with a dog that size I can understand why you wouldn’t want to wait to find out for sure
The dog probably bit you because with kicked it but again I can see why you would do that.
You do need to speak to the police and get medical attention if you have been bitten due to infection and it sounds like your neighbours can’t control their dogs, which can lead to incidents like this or the dogs getting run over or similar

Q

InsomniacAnonymous · 27/01/2019 19:00

What on earth was the owner doing when this happened? Did they make no attempt to get their dog away?

PoliticalBiscuit · 27/01/2019 19:01

Please, all of those people who would also kick a barking dog.

Just no.

It may well turn vicious and attack. If it is growling at you aggressively and snarling, still do not kick it. Do not be the aggressor. Imagine you kick.it, it bites your leg, you cannot stand to hold your child up off the ground.

Just no, research what to do in the event of a dog attack.

I'm not saying the OP did the wrong thing, she felt she was protecting her child in the moment as best she could. But with the benefit of hindsight, kicking a huge dog is just a short cut to a much worse outcome!!

EyesUnderARock · 27/01/2019 19:01

Oh, and I don’t kick. Dogs are faster. Where I used to live, there were a number of free range dogs that were occasionally aggressive. A film canister of chili powder stopped them.

PassTheGinPlease · 27/01/2019 19:01

Ignore the 2 idiots blaming you.

You do need to have the leg looked at, I was bitten by a neighbour's dog and thought it would heal. It caused an awful skin infection which took weeks to go with strong antibiotics and I still have scars now.

Do telephone the police asap, they won't care you kicked the dog, they can charge the owners now under the dangerous dogs act. As you say, they could've hurt your toddler, not to mention the newborn. The dogs are dangerously out of control.

Geminijes · 27/01/2019 19:02

You didn’t provoke it,

She did, she kicked it, the dog then bit her. Before she kicked it, she said the dog was just barking at her daughter, she didn't say the dog was jumping on her daughter.

Rachelle3211 · 27/01/2019 19:02

I've been in this situation and scooped up my ds. I never even thought to kick the dog. I assume it would likely fight back if I did. Was it being aggressive or simply enthusiastic?

Zbag · 27/01/2019 19:02

Ive just read your update, and then your original op... you kicked the dog and then it bit you? Im not surprised then really.. I agree the owners obviously don't have control over the dogs though.

Deadbudgie · 27/01/2019 19:05

Ok so it sounds as if the dogs are too big for owners to control. But you weren’t attacked. Your DD was knocked over presumably by accident no doubt making lots of noise. Was the bark an excited bark or aggressive.

Hope you’ve learned your lesson not to go round kicking animals! The dog doesn’t sound like it was a threat at all just involved in an accident.

I’d personally be having a conversation with the owners about how they will control the dogs going forward. You might find yourself in trouble for kicking the dog.

Did the dog break the skin? If not the dog was using its mouth to restrain you from in its eyes a completely random and unprovoked attack.

MoreCheeseDear · 27/01/2019 19:05

So your daughter was walking besides you and got knocked over probably by accident, you then kicked the dog who retaliated by biting you. Dog did not go to attack your daughter but you attacked dog for barking.

There's always one .

Nicebudget · 27/01/2019 19:05

You sound kind of blasé actually "got no phone credit"

I would have phoned 999 at the time genuinely those dogs needs removing.

Pinkbells · 27/01/2019 19:07

Don't wait for your husband to call them, do it now! It sounds like those dogs should not be with those owners if they cannot control them. Hope you are OK

MoreCheeseDear · 27/01/2019 19:08

You're joking of course.

They need to be put down.
