Best and worst place you have been on holiday to?!

My best was definitely Canada. Driving through the Rockies was an unforgettable experience and we got perfect weather and lots of lovely food and hotel stops along the way.

The worst has to be Dublin. I was really underwhelmed by it and found it crazy expensive.

I live in Auckland and I agree with you. Auckland is actually a pretty nice place to live, but it's still figuring out how to be a city. That said, it's improved vastly over the past decade: city centre used to be a desert after 5 pm, much more lively, public transport improving, more events. Also, it is so spread out that seeing some interesting/unique things (market in Otara with every Polynesian nation represented) involves long bus rides or drives from city centre.

Best - Las Vegas, Marmaris, Mombasa

Worst - Tenerife - do not understand the love for Tenerife at all Shock

Applesaregreenandred · 27/01/2019 20:15

I'm also interested in the comments about Malta. I went with a group of friends in the 1980's. We stayed near Bugiba and I think it was just being developed at the time as our apartment block was completely surrounded by building works. Every night we would trek in the dark across the building site to the same night club. Every meal we ate was burger and chips but I've always assumed, looking back, that there probably was a better choice of restaurants but we just chose to eat what was cheapest and save our money for alcohol.

It's somewhere I've often thought of going back to as I've imagined there's a lot more to it than I chose to seek out at 19.

brighteyeowl17 · 27/01/2019 20:16

Best probably USA

Worst : Grenoble France - rudest people I have ever met and Benidorm- England’s trashiest parts in the heat

Frosty66611 · 27/01/2019 20:17

@maloof it’s The Landings Hotel in Rodney Bay.

Worst - Florida, absolutely hated it, was gutted I had spent so much money. Never again.

Best - I drove around Europe for two weeks once, dossing wherever I could. Absolutely fantastic!

RinkeyDinkey · 27/01/2019 20:22

I also hated Ibiza, I came home a week early from that one and went back to work. 😂

maloofhoof · 27/01/2019 20:26

@Frosty66611 I've heard fabulous things about that hotel! I certainly didn't dislike St Lucia, the people were friendly and we had a great time. I'd certainly return, it just wouldn't be top of my list. Like I said, I just found the beaches a big disappointment. If other people's reviews of the hotel don't mention the beach being disappointing I'd say go for it.

Lostlily · 27/01/2019 20:30

Best- Holland, awa rom Amsterrdam, so different and quiet although Amsterdam during the daytime was lovely.
Also- Madeira, banana trees and beautiful flowers everywhere

Worst- kusadasi Turkey, filthy crowded, loads of men standing in groups staring at you and couldn't even go to the beach without paying for a sun bed, whether you waned one or not

going to Thailand next week... Can't wait

evaperonspoodle · 27/01/2019 20:40

I haven't had any horrible holidays, as a pp pointed out it' s all part of the experience.

Best: Marrakesh, Donegal, North Antrim Coast, Granada

Meh: Casablanca, Marbella, Belfast, Dublin. (Could not believe how run down Dublin was)

Worst: The Dead Sea in Jordan. The place was literally dead. Not a single shop for miles, no public transport and the only things to do were extortionate trips organized by the extortionate hotel. This is on the 'never would I return even if you paid me' list.

We have started going on our main holiday off peak and I must admit most places are much nicer when they are not jam packed full of tourists.

Frosty66611 · 27/01/2019 20:41

@maloof it does seem to be the only hotel out of all the Caribbean ones I’ve researched that has consistently fantastic reviews. I think the beach the hotel is on is meant to be really nice but I’ve heard other ones aren’t up to much.

maloofhoof · 27/01/2019 20:46

@Frosty66611 I'd proceed then. Looks a fantastic hotel.

QueenoftheLurkers · 27/01/2019 20:57

@clionba I think with Malta it depends what you’re expecting. My Dad went there when he was in the forces years ago and it was all quaint little villages with old ladies sitting outside making lace etc and it definitely isn’t like that anymore but there are still some lovely places, interesting history etc. When we were looking at going we knew we wouldn’t want to be in one of the big hotel complexes but would want to be able to get around the island easily. We ended up in a really nice old hotel in Valletta which had beautiful gardens and a pool facing out to sea and had a fab time going on day trips and eating out in Valletta at night. However, we didn’t have any kids with us and while there were other guests who did it wasn’t a family focused hotel, no kids club or entertainment or anything like that and nowhere near the beach so if we’d wanted more that sort of holiday we would probably have been disappointed iyswim.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 27/01/2019 21:01

Not any really horrible holidays. But Ieast favourites are Brugges, Amsterdam and Venice. Touristy, expensive and a bit dull. They all feel a bit theme parky.

Best Everywhere else in Italy except Venice. Lovely people, food, wine, building, language. South of France. Southern States of America.

I quite enjoyed Dublin.

Clionba · 27/01/2019 21:11

Thank you, QueenoftheLurkers. I don't want a beach or a Costa del Sol type holiday, kids grown, so it may be good.

BubblegumFactory · 27/01/2019 21:16

Don’t know about anyone else but I’m saving up for a trip to California after reading this thread - the only place which gets an all-round thumbs up!

We aren’t well- travelled but we had a fabulous holiday years ago in Escala on the Cosra Brava. Lots of very pretty villages on the coast. Lovely.
On the other hand, just down the coast we visited Empuribrava, the total opposite. Busy, noisy, packed beach, hideous.

ilovepixie · 27/01/2019 21:18

Best - Slovenia, Ljubljana was fantastic and Lake Bled was stunning. Really friendly people too. Special mention for my favourite place in the world - Portstewart on the north coast of NI where we have always spent happy summer holidays.

I live in Portrush just up the road from Portstewart. The north coast is beautiful.

Annabk · 27/01/2019 21:26

Worst: New York in Feb. I have never been so cold in my life, everyone was rude and grumpy. Sightseeing didn’t live up to the movies!

Best: Key West in May. Relaxed, warm, friendly people, visited Ernest Hemingway’s house.

Binkybix · 27/01/2019 21:36

Oh dear. I’ve just booked a holiday in Malta 😂

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 27/01/2019 21:50

Worst: Bali - felt guilty for being another cheap tourist wrecking their island with all the shitty cheap tourism around, awful place. Also Dublin - fucking hated the place, thought it run-down, overpriced, unfriendly, and wished we'd gone back to Belfast, which was awesome.

Best: too many to say really, although I love love love being on holiday in the UK. Cornwall and Devon holidays were always magical for me and still are, same with the Isle of Wight.

bluetit101 · 27/01/2019 21:59

Best - New York. I know a lot of people on here have listed it as their worst but I loved it, and am taking my 12 and 15 year old this year.

Worst - Haven't really had a proper holiday I didn't enjoy, but we did take the kids to Pontins once and I actually cried real tears as it was such a disgusting shit hole

ilovepixie · 27/01/2019 21:59

I've not had a bad holiday I've actually only been on 3 abroad and all last year, Benalmadena, Benidorm and Albufeira. Loved them all. Going back to Benidorm in March and going to Ibiza in September. But that's the type of beach, sun drinks holiday we like.

DappledThings · 27/01/2019 22:05

@Binkybix It'll be great! See my previous posts. I've recommended Malta to lots of people.

Binkybix · 27/01/2019 22:13

@dappledthings I’m sure it will be, although I’m annoyed to realise we’re a long way from the blue grotto!

Somewhereovertheroad · 27/01/2019 22:17

Would definitely agree with Portrush, Portstewart and the whole North Coast but Belfast? Less so.
