DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

@NCjustforthisthread it's people like you who will be panic buying and causing a problem. Our cupboards are full so we won't be joining you for the bun fight.

Damn, I wander off for the day and come back to find someone else got the bingo prizes.

SalrycLuxx · 26/01/2019 19:32

Yup. I’ve got enough in my well stocked larder for 2 months. The Black Friday/reduced sticker style bunfights can be had by someone else.

Shockers · 26/01/2019 19:33

I’ve made two raised veg beds and am contemplating keeping chickens.

DH’s business is providing what could be seen as a ‘luxury’, so I can see our family income plummeting rapidly after March.

thebabysmellsofpooagain · 26/01/2019 19:35

@SalrycLuxx exactly that. It fucking bugs me when people turn up on these threads telling us that we are causing a problem by stocking up, when the reality is that it's the panic buyers that cause the issue!

I've only a little stash, but I'm slowly adding to it as and when I can afford it, one tin at a time.

Anymom · 26/01/2019 19:40

Haven't read the whole thread yet but I'm glad dh has decided to stock up. I'm not keen on some of his choices of things to stock up on but I can sort that and am now beginning to form a sensible list.
We have 4 dc and our ds is autistic. He would starve if his normal foods weren't available. So it makes sense to stockpile these just incase.
I'm really shocked that the government has allowed this to happen. I wish TM would just rule out a no deal instead of wasting millions of pounds of tax payers money on preparing for it by expanding ports etc. It could all be for nothing and I'm sure the money is desperately needed in other areas eg benefits and education!

Clearly supermark ers will have restocked their tinned tomatoes by March. Especially as we currently have customs agreements in place! Panic buying at the end of March when there are no customs arrangements will cause empty shelves. Not some people adding an extra pack of loo rolls to their weekly shop in January.

Shockers · 26/01/2019 19:45

I wonder whether businesses will increase the price of wholly British made products...

WickedGoodDoge · 26/01/2019 20:00

Sainsbury’s currently have half price tinned tomatoes at 50p a tin. It’s almost like they are willing us to stockpile. Grin

Yes. You have missed something. Can’t be arssd to explain to you at this stage how just-in-time workflow and the Dover-Calais route works. Google it and take responsibility for yourself. HTH.

borntobequiet · 26/01/2019 20:05

50p a tin for tomatoes seems expensive to me!
Go to Asda.

Oysterbabe · 26/01/2019 20:06

50p is a lot. I get the basics 35p ones.

Anymom · 26/01/2019 20:10

Wicked I have also noticed that the supermarkets have alot of long life goods eg soup, beans and bloody pot noodles on offer at the moment. Maybe they are secretly willing us to stock up so that they can stockpile. As if more tinned products are sold now due to the offers, more will be ordered. Supply and demand.

I've just added 3 snickers to my stash. It would of been 4 but I wanted one Blush

Brexit apocalypse?! What on Earth?! Have I missed something that says we have to stock up or something?!

You've clearly missed this (from the Guardian, but also in other newspapers today):

The contingency planning for no-deal – codenamed Operation Yellowhammer – has so far involved hundreds of civil servants being given a three-hour introductory briefing on the potential impact on communities, trade, border crossings and regulations.

The government has a running list of “reasonable worst-case scenarios”, which is constantly being amended and updated. Earlier this month it included a gamut of serious concerns.
According to an internal document seen by the Guardian, these included:

• A reduction in certain fresh foods and increases in prices, with people on low incomes disproportionately affected.
• Price rises across utilities and services including fuel.
• Private companies “cashing in” because they will put commercial considerations first.
• Police forces being stretched by the likelihood of protests and counter-protests, along with an increase in public disorder.
• Restocking of medicines becoming problematic after the first six weeks.
A significant reduction in the flow of goods through Dover and Eurotunnel to as low as 13% of current capacity on the day of Brexit.

If the flow of goods is cut to only 13% of current capacity, that means that instead of 10,000 lorries a day arriving, only 1,300 would arrive. Instead of a typical supermarket receiving 10 lorry-loads of fresh imported food a week (just under 2 a day) it would only receive just over one load a week, which would sell out within hours even without panic buying. Repeat for foods made from imported ingredients and the result is empty shelves in a very short time.

Jack Monroe can fuck right off.... He campaigned for remain but spoilt his vote? Cunt!!

SalrycLuxx · 26/01/2019 20:26

. It’s almost like they are willing us to stockpile

I’m starting to wonder. The front of house displays seem remarkably ‘on point’

mum2jakie · 26/01/2019 20:26

@ Crunchy mum

He's a She! And as for spoiling her ballot - there were a few more than one vote determining the result so not exactly worthy of your response!

GlitterStick · 26/01/2019 20:32

Jack Monroe isn't a he! Flippin' Eck.

borntobequiet · 26/01/2019 20:33

Well of course. It makes more sense for us to stockpile, rather than them. If one million households stockpile an extra 4 cans of beans, that’s four million cans of beans the supermarket doesn’t have to find warehouse space for. And so on for UHT milk, beans, rice and so on.
If I were Mr Sainsbury or Mr Morrison, I’d be pleading with people to stockpile.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2019 20:36

Tbf Jack Monroe has been a few things including a ‘them’ and an ‘it’. Very confusing.

MeMumsMedicine · 26/01/2019 20:38

Boom76

Yep, how embarrassing that your husband might want to make sure his family will have enought food to eat if it all goes tits up.....

Havanananana · 26/01/2019 20:52

Well of course. It makes more sense for us to stockpile, rather than them. If one million households stockpile an extra 4 cans of beans, that’s four million cans of beans the supermarket doesn’t have to find warehouse space for. And so on for UHT milk, beans, rice and so on.

I was just about to make the same point in a slightly different way.

There is now little or no warehouse space available in the UK as companies, retailers, manufacturers etc have already filled the available space. Usually they don't need all of this warehouse space - the thousands of lorries on the road delivering just-in-time are in effect rolling warehouses.

Anyway - there are approx. 26 million households in the UK.

The volume of Wembley Stadium is about one million cubic metres, so if every household had a stockpile of about one cubic metre (two large cupboards full) then that would reduce the supermarkets' warehouse requirements by the equivalent of 26 buildings the size of Wembley Stadium.

Crunchymum · 26/01/2019 20:54

I have no idea who Jack Monroe is. So took a punt with the name.... silly me!!

Rest if what I said, still stands. No "remain campaigner" would have spoilt their ballot.

Me thinks this Jack person is a bit of a drama llama and / or attention seeker.

Scandaloso · 26/01/2019 20:55

Morrison's do a lot of three tins for £1 in their world foods section for things like tomatoes/chickpeas/black eyed beans/coconut milk etc. Cheaper than buying on their non world food aisle!
