DH and his Brexit cupboard

Anymom · 25/01/2019 22:45

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

I have a Brexit box. It's soon to become 3 Brexit boxes, as the first one is too small.

I have advised and encouraged my elderly mother to keep her cupboards and freezer fully topped up, which she has been doing.

PerverseConverse · 26/01/2019 18:00

@80sMum same here. My silly mother voted leave but now deeply regrets it. She didn't really know what she was voting for Confused She's now prepping a little but needs to up her game. My brexit box is pretty full so I need another one. I r got extra stuff in the cupboards too. Not loads at all but enough to make me feel happier about feeding my family.

My DDs' dad thinks there'll be no noticeable difference to anything after brexit but then he always was an idiot.

WickedGoodDoge · 26/01/2019 18:04

I have just reorganised my herbs and spices and have realised that I may well own every single one out there. At least if the apocalypse happens, I will have well seasoned food. Blush

Argh, I just found seven more!

madcatladyforever · 26/01/2019 18:09

I haven't got a brexit cupboard because the 2000 computer thing didn't happen either and no planes fell out of the sky.

artisanscotcheggs · 26/01/2019 18:09

@MissMisery you can freeze both. They will last about twelve months.

madcatladyforever · 26/01/2019 18:10

And don't bother stocking the freezer either because if the brexit apocalypse happens we will have no power either.

PoutySprout · 26/01/2019 18:11

Yes that’s just the same. Computer programmers working around the clock will save us from Brexit. Hmm

I've added some bread mix, tinned custard and tinned peaches to my Brexit drawer.

If people want to prep a bit what's the problem?

There isn’t one.

But neither is there with not...and tbh it seems to be more those that do prep that are scoffing at those that don’t than the other way around.

For me...I just don’t care enough. What will happen if I don’t prep? Will I die? Will my children starve? Probably not. And I can live with bland/restricted food for a bit and am not particularly bothered about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I would probably want to stock up on essential medicines if we had any, like a pp who mentioned epi pens and inhalers because they’re literally life or death.

Can’t be arsed for the rest though, we’ll deal with whatever we can buy at the time.

nicoala1 · 26/01/2019 18:34

@PerfectlyPetty

You are right, it is up to us as individuals to do what we think is right for us.

TheElementsSong · 26/01/2019 18:44

^^

bellinisurge · 26/01/2019 18:46

If someone calls me a scaremongering halfwit (as regularly happens on these threads) I'm not really going to just take it. I scoff back.
I've had quite enough of delicate sensibilities over this.
I genuinely don't care how you voted as long as you are getting a sensible proportionate buffer of food in that suits you and your family and your budget.
Keeps you away from the shops getting into avoidable trouble and stressing you out. Things will probably calm down quickly because we are like that as a country but that doesn't mean it will be a cheaper and more chilled out Calm. Quite the opposite.
@TheElementsSong has it. If I say I'm building in some pantry resilience for snow or ill health etc, I'm sensible. If I do it because I'm concerned a no deal Brexit will lead to food supply problems, I'm an unbeliever and a wrecker.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 26/01/2019 18:54

2000 computer thing?

You sound like a well-informed person, lets all listen to your advice shall we.....

Hmm
Whatdoiwanttohear · 26/01/2019 18:56

madcatlady wouldn't cross your mind at all that millions was spent ensuring that nothing did go wrong with regards to the Millennium bug or that many years were spent working on it to make sure it went smoothly? Hmm

PerverseConverse · 26/01/2019 18:58

I think a good supply of comfort food and alcohol for those who drink are a good idea. My 4 year old ds's favourite treat is curly wurly squirlies. They are made in Poland so I doubt they'll stay £1 in Asda after brexit. I'm stocking up now so he can still have them albeit on a more rationed basis. My treats of choice vary considerably so makes sense to have a variety of goodies in.

NCjustforthisthread · 26/01/2019 19:13

Brexit apocalypse?! What on Earth?! Have I missed something that says we have to stock up or something?! I’m confused. Surely it’s panic buying rather than this apocalypse is what that might cause the shelves to be bare? - although to be fair the only people I’ve ever heard of stocking up are from Mumsnet.... I get the medication bit, but food, toothpaste, toilet rolls....etc... baffling, it’s like one if those zombie apocalypse you watch on TWD?!

chillpizza · 26/01/2019 19:23

I’m keeping a stock of shower gel, washing powder and toilet roll. If I’m going to starve I’m going to smell nice and have a clean arse Grin

Bluelonerose · 26/01/2019 19:24

I have a brexit cupboard too Grin

I'm sick and tired of the rest of the family taking the piss out of me for prepping and telling me I'm paranoid. Well I can't wait to sit there all smug scoffing kitkats that I've stashed away.

chillpizza · 26/01/2019 19:24

Oh I lie I’ve managed to get 7month supply of dhs prescription meds as well.

borntobequiet · 26/01/2019 19:24

You haven’t missed anything. You don’t have to do anything. All is completely normal and well, as we said in 1939.
HTH.

Oysterbabe · 26/01/2019 19:28

Panic buying is what people who haven't been stocking up will do. And it still won't be them that cause shelves to be bare, it will be the break in the supply chain.
