DH and his Brexit cupboard

Dh has converted two of our kitchen units into his Brexit cupboard! He has filled them up with all sorts of tinned delacacies including different beans, chilli and dogs (hot!)
He's also stockpiled toilet rolls, medicines, cleaning products etc. It's all stashed away in his new Brexit cupboard, that we have been warned not to touch! I darent tell him that the dc have already been in there hunting for chocolate. They were disappointed to find numerous bags of rice and pasta but alas no chocolate. Seems he has got his priorities mixed up! 😁
AIBU to think this is unnecessary and over the top? I need help to convince him as he talking about stockpiling and filling up the freezer and I'm dreading what concoctions I will find in there! All joking aside, it is just Dh panicking isn't it? We don't really need to be stockpiling food in one of the richest countries of the world, do we?

Particularly as a v reliable source has told me that the govt haven't got enough chemicals stock piled to treat sewage in the event of no deal.

No , just terrifying. What's exciting about a cold civil war about to burn hot? Op, I thought my dh would take the piss out of me for stockpiling some basics. He's helping me now. This is real, we are about to crash out of the EU with no deal because our political class have been collective fools for 40 years.

I have a Brexit cupboard. Tea, milk, cereal, tinned beans, meats, veg, fruit, puds. Biscuits. Olive oil. Extra loo roll. Not a huge amount but I feel a bit more secure. This ‘just in time’ shelf stocking is a concern.

Good point about food banks. I guess they will be needed now more than ever. Think I have just found a new home for the pot noodles. I'm going to talk to dh about possibly donating some of the tinned food as well and will add some other essentials to our next shop.
Then I think we need to sit down and comprise a meal plan to stockpile items we are likely to use.

DH has diabetes and though we haven't talked about it, you can't really because of shelf life.
So I hope they have stocks at the hospital.

But food wise we are very flexible so will just eat whatever there is.

I have not yet resorted to stockpiling for Brexit but I do think there may be some supply chain issues initially if we leave with no deal. I find it worrying but am not sure stockpiling a few weeks food is the answer. The general consensus is with no deal it could take up to 6 months to get a new deal arranged with countries who regularly supply us with food etc. We will just have to eat food sourced locally. My brother who actually voted remain now thinks leaving the EU is a good idea until I mentioned his medication which he takes regularly to keep his MS symptoms at bay may not be so readily available after March. We don't make drugs in the UK. Most come from the EU.

It's all stuff I would eat or use anyway and that will last a long time so if everything is tickety boo in March, we revoke article 50, find some politicians who can run the country and dye the fucking passports blue to keep the quitters happy, I'll just have cheap food bills in April. And if the country turns to shit, I'll have some supplies.

Can I ask - how many of you on this thread have read the actual technical notices regarding Brexit???? not just the stuff published by journalists that have an agenda. I remember the headlines on cheese - the cost of cheese is going to go up and become a luxury!!!!!! but the technical notices say cheese isn’t even covered by EU regs... .the reason I ask is whilst we are at a difficult time won't stockpiling just lead to unnecessary pandemonium

I started filling our Brexit cupboard (actually more of a Brexit ottoman) this week. So far it consists of a couple of instant porridge pots, pasta, pesto, tinned soup and jaffa cakes. I have a list of what else we need to get before d-day.

He might be going about it in a slightly daft way (no point buying pot noodles if you don't even eat them no matter how good the offer is) but his heart is in the right place.
He's trying to make sure his family don't go hungry if things go wrong.

It's sensible to keep at least a weeks food 'just in case' anyway even if Brexit doesn't happen, so that if you get snowed in/power cut/ill/other random reason like going to the shops to find the banks have messed up again so you can't buy your shopping with your card, you aren't wishing you'd kept at least one of those pot noodles.

I have a Brexit cupboard I haven’t been going overboard but I’ve been adding an extra few quid’s worth of tins etc to every food shop for the last month or so, and plan to continue doing this until the big day itself. I’m also buying extra bits for the freezer.

Do I think we’re all going to starve? No, probably not. But I do think there could be serious headaches trying to find certain things in the supermarkets in the days and weeks after Brexit, and I just find it comforting to know we have enough to eat for a week or two if it comes to it.

We already have a tall freezer in the kitchen and an additional fridge freezer in the garage - and now a special extra Brexit freezer.

Well to be serious if you really think Brexit is going to be such a disaster
on the epic scale being portrayed, then the amounts described are, frankly, pitiful.

You need supplies to last 10 years, at least, stored in multiple locations (think like a squirrel) - because you are going to lose most (if not all) your stash to raiders.

You have food, they don't = Battle.

No, not if people just quietly buy an extra few tins here and there, stuff they’ll use up anyway even if the worst doesn’t happen (so buying pot noodles is indeed a little daft if you don’t even eat them normally)

The pandemonium will only happen if the press suddenly decide to run a headline saying NO TOMATOES AFTER BREXIT!!! or something along those lines, in which case people will suddenly rush out and buy tinned tomatoes by the dozen and actually create the predicted shortage!

Don't bother with the Brexit cupboard because when the sky falls in the cupboard will be fucked.
Planes will fall out of the sky. Motor vehicles will mysteriously stop working, all the local suppliers will fail to supply. Vessels will be unable to cross the sea. The Earth will stop turning, the world as we know it will completely crumble and we'll all be doomed.
