To shamefully ask how much you pay for gas and electricity

As the title suggests..

I have an average sized 2 bed house.

British Gas, for gas and electricity used to be charging us £65 per month but suddenly my direct debit the last two months is now £98 per month.

This seems extortionate.

We have the house set to 18/19 degrees and often turn up to 20 if it's particularly cold.

Am I paying the norm or is this overpriced?

We are with Pure Power and pay £90 in the winter & £55 in the summer. It's fairly new to us but we aren't in debit yet.

shazkevincarrotlover · 24/01/2019 19:00

I pay £145 a math I'm in a 3 bed semi with no gas supply.(but I do have 3 teenagers 😁)

ferrier · 24/01/2019 19:00

Most calculators allow around £40 each per month for gas and electricity for that size of property.

HavelockVetinari · 24/01/2019 19:01

We have a 5 bed and pay £72 per month (although we're out all day 4 days per week and consider 18° normal temperature). Can't remember supplier though, will ask DH.

oldfatandtired1 · 24/01/2019 19:01

2 bed modern house in Hampshire, live alone. £48 per month with Scottish Power.

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 24/01/2019 19:02

Three bed Victorian end of terrace
Original windows so draughty
£98 a month for Electricity and Gas combined

AFOLNerd · 24/01/2019 19:02

We have a 4 bed detached, there is 6 of us plus 2 pets which have heat lamps and pay £92 for both with British Gas.
Though I have had the heating on a lot for the last month so fully expecting it to go up quite a bit. We normally have heating set at 18 during day and 14 at night.

Finfintytint · 24/01/2019 19:03

I think there has been a recent hike in prices. I pay £70 a month for electric and average another £70 or so in oil. No gas in my rural are unfortunately.

Calmingvibrations · 24/01/2019 19:03

Ours is about 120£ month in winter, but I’m home most days and my OH had the heating up really high (and sits in a bloody t shirt grrr). We use the washing machine loads. We’re on a slightly more expensive green tariff too. So yours doesn’t sound too expensive to me unless you are hardly at home.

FevertreeLight · 24/01/2019 19:05

£443 a month. Do I win?

IsobelKarev · 24/01/2019 19:05

A comparison site is your best bet. If you have your most recent annual summary it will be pretty accurate too.

FWIW I pay £50 per month combined and I live in a small two bed house. I have the fire or heating on if I'm cold (anything below 20ish), but because there's just me nothing is switched on while I'm at work or overnight (except the fridge and freezer).

Drogosnextwife · 24/01/2019 19:06

I'm with sse hydro, they recently out mine up. Altogether I'm £124 a month. Probably should be more but evens out in the summer. We live in a 2 bed ground floor 4 in a block.

Nquartz · 24/01/2019 19:06

Ours is £80 for gas & elec. 3 bed detached, 2 adults, 1 child. Heating is.usually on 18/19 evenings & weekends, 16 other times.

Drogosnextwife · 24/01/2019 19:07

I work from home though.

HauntedPencil · 24/01/2019 19:07

Blimey fevertree

There is a new service that checks for you periodically & switches you that was on Dragons Den

I looked at it but they said my current deal was fine.

CobaltRose96 · 24/01/2019 19:07

No gas, electricity only. We pay £39 for a one bedroom flat.

SayNoToCarrots · 24/01/2019 19:07

I pay £90 a month to hardly ever put the heating on because it costs a penny a minute (an hour a day works out around £18), and run a tumble dryer once or twice a week. Its a 3 bed semi. Obvs we shower, cook and use lights etc. If we don't shower palms don't put the heating on and get a takeaway, the smart meter usually says about £1:50 by the end of the day. Which means a cheap month is still about £50-£60.

FevertreeLight · 24/01/2019 19:09

Blimey fevertree

Gas aga and 2 boilers.

DowntonCrabby · 24/01/2019 19:10

£90 a month dual fuel DD for a 90m2 3 bed terrace.
Someone’s at home probably 1/2 the time in the week and we keep it fairly cool, 17/18*

DowntonCrabby · 24/01/2019 19:11

Also it’s in the North of Scotland

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 24/01/2019 19:11

2 bed flat

£99 a month for both Electricity and Gas combined. We only have the heating on twice a day for an hour. Judging by these responses, I'd better start looking at better deals

Iownabigvase · 24/01/2019 19:12

Mines about £80 per month for gas in the winter (can be more if its really cold) and £30-£40 in the summer.
£40 per month for electric in the winter but probably around £30 a week in summer due to using less lighting, eating cold food so not using the cooker as much and being out more.

Gas is so much in the winter because my house is freezing unless I have the heating on quite high and I hate being cold. Its only a two bed house too 😳

mando12345 · 24/01/2019 19:12

4 bed semi, £82 a.month for gas and electricity. We're in credit. Heating off at night. On when we're in in the daytime say half the day and all during the evening.

O4FS · 24/01/2019 19:13

Thanks Fevertree you made me feel much better about my £250 a month (5 bed Victorian semi with gas aga).

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 24/01/2019 19:13

£50 electric and £90 oil, 3 bed poorly insulated old house, no double glazing and no gas in our rural location.
