To shamefully ask how much you pay for gas and electricity

As the title suggests..

I have an average sized 2 bed house.

British Gas, for gas and electricity used to be charging us £65 per month but suddenly my direct debit the last two months is now £98 per month.

This seems extortionate.

We have the house set to 18/19 degrees and often turn up to 20 if it's particularly cold.

Am I paying the norm or is this overpriced?

5 bedroom/5 bathroom house. 2 boilers. 4 of us.

I've paid around £200 for years, even in a smaller house, but then I moved to bulb.

I have paid £109 for the last two months and they say I am in credit. I am amazed they can do it so cheaply and wish I'd found them before now!

£68.50 pcm dual elec & gas.

New 4 bed detached house 2000sq feet

Heating on 7-8.30 and 4-10pm. 18 degrees during those hours.

I also turn it on if cold

I've recently moved into a 2 bed small semi.(September) There's only myself and DH.
We got our bills last week. £97 for electric and £120 for gas. Very pleased for 4 months usage.

Passthepigs · 25/01/2019 13:06

£68 on electric. We don’t have gas.

saphycat · 25/01/2019 13:17

We pay an eye water £70 a month for heat and £180 a quarter for energy, one bedroom flat, only two of us who are usually out of the house for 13 hours a day.

We're stuck on an infuriating green energy plan with useless, blood suck E.On who tried to fine us for not taking a day off for them to come and install a smart meter...

dewils · 25/01/2019 22:47

If anyone wants a referral code, here's mine. If you do a comparison and Bulb comes up at a good price for you, they use renewable energy & will pay your exit fees if you have any. They'll give us £100 each if you use before midnight weds 30 Jan, £50 after.

OP we are also in a 2 bed and with BG.

But somehow we only pay monthly by DD for gas and elec used the previous month - on the last day of each month I login and input the gas and elec meter readings, and the following month the money is taken by DD.

Our elec bill is pretty much constant - between £30 and £40 pm. Obviously the higher end in winter due to increased use of tumble drier etc.

Gas is obviously cheapest in Summer, when its around £10 pm, than winter (max £90pm).

I am retired and DH only p/t, so heating on all day in winter.

Hotterthanahotthing · 26/01/2019 00:00

If your direct debit went up then it means your previous monthly payments were not enough to cover the gas and electricity youare using.
I pay £40 a month and am in credit but it is slowly decreasing as we use more in winter for example we used £56 this month.

Abby360 · 26/01/2019 00:03

£121 a month, 3 bed, 3 person family. Thinking maybe we should switch!

tangledyarn · 26/01/2019 00:07

3 bed semi, only 2 of us but one of us is in most of the time and I'm always cold so around 120 a month, we're with bulb, switched last year from npower. It's no cheaper but the website is v user friendly and makes it really easy to manage account better.

JasperKarat · 26/01/2019 00:08

3 bed Edwardian semi, three reception rooms and kitchen, bathroom etc £124 a month got an email today to say my desk is up soon and cheapest new deal.is £146!

LoniceraJaponica · 26/01/2019 00:30

4 bed detached. OH works from home, and I work part time so the heating is on all day right now. I also have a gas cooker. We pay £86.98 a month for gas and £47.36 for electricity. However, we have solar panels and the feed in tariff covers a good proportion of what we pay.

We are with Utility Warehouse and also have telephone and broadband through them. In 2018 we ended up paying £137.09 in total for a year's worth of gas, electricity, telephone and broadband!

3 bedroom townhouse built 2 years ago. £35 a month dual fuel with EDF. We are £78 in credit.

fiydwi · 26/01/2019 06:57

I pay £97. I live in a 3 bed detached house and work from home 3 days a week so my heating is on quite a bit at the moment.
