To shamefully ask how much you pay for gas and electricity

As the title suggests..

I have an average sized 2 bed house.

British Gas, for gas and electricity used to be charging us £65 per month but suddenly my direct debit the last two months is now £98 per month.

This seems extortionate.

We have the house set to 18/19 degrees and often turn up to 20 if it's particularly cold.

Am I paying the norm or is this overpriced?

We've spent £80.22 so far this month according to smart meter. Thermastat is set to 22 degrees pretty much all day as boyfriend works from home, 18 overnight.

Houseonahill · 24/01/2019 19:49

Normal 2 bed house £38 electric and £33 gas, I have the house at a solid 20 all year round.

WH1SPERS · 24/01/2019 19:49

3 bed flat, large rooms, high ceilings
Cold part of the UK

New gas CH

£100 / month for gas and electric now. A lot less in the summer.

YourFly · 24/01/2019 19:53

£45 a month at the mo.

I have been with bulb for 3 months & give a meter reading every month.

You can get £50 credit & I get £50 if you use my referral.

If you join Bulb, you then pass on your referral link to your family/friends in the future to keep getting your £50 credits.

A nice MN let me use hers.

Mine is,

Just because your dd has gone up it doesn’t mean you are paying more.

They seem to put mine up then i end up in a few £100 credit at the end of the year. I don’t mind as the rebate is quite nice when it comes.

I am in an open plan 5 bed. Don’t excessively use heating/hot water etc but currently paying around 45-50/week in gas and electric, about £200/month. Only just got a smart meter though, presumably will use about half that in the summer. Normally average about £130/month i think.

Xmasbaby11 · 24/01/2019 19:58

About £140 a month even though we switch deals regularly. Large 4 bed victorian over 3 floors - original windows, high ceilings. So hard to heat!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/01/2019 19:59

About £90 a month, I did get quite a good tariff with Eon though in September. It depends how much you are paying per unit and the standing charge to say if it’s extortionate though

tor8181 · 24/01/2019 19:59

ive a big 3 bedroom in the valleys of south wales

we live on top of a mountain and apart from a small fence my garden leads in to the mountains so it gets cold and dark early,we have 3-4 street lights on the street and thats it (its -2 at the mo)so not very natural light going on

we also home educate and boys dont sleep so we do run the house 24 hours as we are up all night most nights

boys are also naked at the time due to sensory needs so i need to keep the house warm, dont know if it makes a difference but up stairs windows are massive as apart from a few inches top and bottom they are the whole size of the wall, i do have thick lined curtains up but i dont know if we loose heat through them, they are double glazed though

im a pay as you go meter and on average do 30-£40 per week on electric but we do have numerous devices running the same time

gas is £40-£50 per week(more in the winter)but we do get the warm home front scheme of £140 per winter and £25 off the government if its below 0

my indoor temperature gauge is saying 35.2c which is normal ish as its usually between 30-35

hshavshejwhg12 · 24/01/2019 20:00

4 bedroom house with no gas, only electricity. £110 a month

tor8181 · 24/01/2019 20:00

also forgot to add as a family of 4 we have 5 baths per day

Yorkshiremum17 · 24/01/2019 20:00

3 bed semi 90's build, £76 a month dual fuel and we're currently in credit. We generally only put the heating to a maximum of 20c in the evening for a couple of hours, unless it's bitterly cold. We're with Avro at the moment. Their customer service has been spot on.

Shannaratiger · 24/01/2019 20:01

3 bedroom housing association, one in the attic so no insulation. £56 per month for gas and electricity with First Utility. We do have solar panels though.

Dieu · 24/01/2019 20:03

£130 a month. Basement flat in a conservation area of Edinburgh. No double glazing. Massive traditional style radiators, but the whole system needs power flushed, so the heating and hot water are working ineffectually. I love my flat, and the location is amazing, but not sure I'd ever go for an older property again!

Bertiebitch32 · 24/01/2019 20:04

4 bedroom barn conversion, night storage heating so no gas up here! Paying £200 per month Angry

WWlOOlWW · 24/01/2019 20:08

I'm on key meters. 3 bed semi. I put a £100 on both gas and electricity at a time. In winter the gas will last 2 months and 4 months in summer. The electric lasts 4 months both in winder and summer.

siobhan8686 · 24/01/2019 20:10

£100 electric £140 gas = £240 a month (payg smart meter) I live in a 4 bed detached. Ive looked around and apparently I'm on the cheapest Hmm

Croprotationinthe14thcentury · 24/01/2019 20:25

£140 p/m - 3 bed mid terrace. But I work from home childminding, so the heatings on loads. Still need to shop around though looking at what others pay. Would anyone recommend a good comparison website for this? Is comparethemarket.com ok?

Kitkatmonster · 24/01/2019 20:34

Recommend MSE energy saving club to check tariffs. Been using them for years and it ensures I’m always on the best tariff, they email you as soon as there’s a better deal. I pay £98/month gas & electric, 4 bed detached, 3 kids, 2 adults and I wfh most days (but granted I usually layer up than heat the whole house just for me).

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/01/2019 20:36

It’s just luck though if you get a good tariff if you change each year as there is not a vey big window to do it in or you end up paying exit fees to exit early or on a standard variable rate if you leave it too long to swap, also the good deals are pulled quite quickly, I used the Martin Lewis website. How long have you been with BG OP? Do you change each year

Vicsleighbob · 24/01/2019 20:41

£180 p/m with British Gas duel fuel for our small 4 bed detached in W Yorkshire 😞

DerelictWreck · 24/01/2019 20:46

2 bed 2 floor flat and I pay £40 a month for both together

mrcharlie · 24/01/2019 20:48

Can't believe how little most pay on here.
We have a 4 bed detached that was converted to 3 bed as soon as we moved in - love nice big bedrooms!! (and no silly en-suites).
We pay £140pcm. The house has warm air heating and the 24/7 hot water.

We both know it's a little too high, but neither of us could give a toss about what car we drive or what label we wear. But we love our warm house and constant hot water...without doubt it's our biggest luxury.

SaltedIceCream · 24/01/2019 20:48

3 bed semi detached.
2 adults, 2 kids.

£80 a month for both. British Gas.

Heating on whenever I’m cold.

cushioncovers · 24/01/2019 20:50

£65 a month electric

£79 a month gas.

3 bed semi with two teens.

I do have the heating on quite a lot and I have an electric blanket. I go without other things so that I don't have to worry about being cold.

Lucyccfc · 24/01/2019 20:51

Mines sounds very reasonable after reading some of the others. 3 bed semi and I pay combined £82 a month. Have the heating on first thing in the morning and then again from 3-10pm. Always set to 24 degrees and pretty much have it on all weekend.
