To shamefully ask how much you pay for gas and electricity

parsnipandpotato · 24/01/2019 18:56

As the title suggests..

I have an average sized 2 bed house.

British Gas, for gas and electricity used to be charging us £65 per month but suddenly my direct debit the last two months is now £98 per month.

This seems extortionate.

We have the house set to 18/19 degrees and often turn up to 20 if it's particularly cold.

Am I paying the norm or is this overpriced?

Lazypuppy · 24/01/2019 20:51

We pay £30 gas and £30 electrix per konth.

2 bed terrace, 2 adults and a baby

Sweetpotatoaddict · 24/01/2019 20:54

I know quite a few folk who have had inexplicable increases in direct debit with British Gas recently.
The front of your bill show projected annual consumption. Divide that by 12 to get your monthly dd payment.
My projection was for £700, but they attempted to increase my payment to £84 a month. When I called they couldn’t understand why, so it’s back at my usual £65 a month again( 2 bed 1920s house) I wonder if they’ve changed their algorithm or something?

Nacreous · 24/01/2019 20:54

Mine used to be about £40pcm in total for gas and elective. but has gone up as I a) realised it was that little so decided I could a little warmer (heating goes up to 19.5 on a Sunday afternoon as a treat now).

With decreased frugality and increased energy prices it's now £55pcm total.

Normally heating set to 18 for 1.5 hrs in the morning, 12 in the day and then 18 from 5-9pm, 14 at night.

Single skin Victorian two bed end of terrace but the loft is moderately well insulated.

Get a years worth of meter movement or approximately that off your bills and then use Money Saving Expert, as they have a good comparison tool.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/01/2019 20:54

We have got a new boiler, I think that can mean a bit lower energy bills, there are a lot of factors though which can lead to different bill amounts,

onlyhereforthefood · 24/01/2019 20:57

Three bed mid-terrace

£80 p/month gas in winter
£12 p/month electric (solar panels keep this down, we are very liberal with our tumble dryer usage!)

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/01/2019 21:00

Yes, I have used MSE for years the energy forums are quite useful on there as is the cheap energy club

needmorespace · 24/01/2019 21:04

three bed terrace - £107 a month, but i have built up a credit in excess of £700. Last month's bill was £137. I'm dreading it this month. In summer my bill might be £40/£45 or so.
My house is always cold unless I leave the heating on permanently (old single glazed sash windows, wooden floors etc)

mizu · 24/01/2019 21:04

Whenisnappedandfarted - us too!!
£98 for both and a 2 bed flat!!

saladfingers · 24/01/2019 21:11

Gas prices are set to rise steeply. Good idea to sign up for long term fixed rates if you can. We're with Npower just renegotiated 3yr fixed rate deal for £117pcm for gas and electric. 5 bed Edwardian semi in South Wales. We do have a 13kwatt log burner that is on most evenings and all weekend in the winter.

TheHorseyouRodeInOn · 24/01/2019 21:34

£75 a month for a three bedroom semi. Heating is on most of the time in winter but we have a new boiler and it's very efficient. It's with GB energy.

adriennewillfly · 24/01/2019 21:40

190 a month when it's coldest, 40 a month at the hottest

bellabasset · 24/01/2019 21:45

My usage is around 9500k/w hours and 2600 k/w for elec annually. The cost is £900 annually but I am using less than last year and am predicted to get a refund.

Roomba · 25/01/2019 06:41

BG Prepayment meters in a 2 bed Victorian terrace (have good double glazing and insulation). I am repaying debt weekly, but my actual usage worked out monthly equates to:

Winter: Electric £38, Gas £45
Summer: Electric £35, Gas >£10 (we do wash, I promise! Hot water only doesn't seem to cost us too much)

Mummadeeze · 25/01/2019 06:45

£100 a month for gas and electric from NPower. In a two bed flat that is naturally warm. Feel like I am overpaying reading this thread.

TheClitterati · 25/01/2019 06:47

I'm with Bulb and pay £80 month - 3 story 3 bed.

Tattybear16 · 25/01/2019 06:50

£250 per month dual fuel. Big old house, 3 large bedrooms.

TheClitterati · 25/01/2019 06:53

Here's a £100 referal link for Bulb if anyone wants one:

bulb.co.uk/refer/rachel62811_

I've been with them for a year and can't find a better deal on comparison sites - I check periodically bThey are 100% green too.

ChesterGreySideboard · 25/01/2019 06:54

Another Bulb customer here. We pay £98 for a three bed semi but I think out windows and door need replacing.

Here is my bulb code. bulb.co.uk/refer/kate6795

Veronicat · 25/01/2019 06:56

Electric 80pm. Coal 60pm. Biomass pellets for heating/hot water 250 every 4-5 weeks in the winter. A farmhouse in freezing cold rural Scotland. ❄

Timtims · 25/01/2019 07:03

£110 pm dual fuel. Large 4 bed detached.
House kept at c18° although heating switches off between 8am-3pm and overnight.
I'd say we were careful with heating but liberal with hot water (baths, showers). Bloody kids (and DH) leave lights on constantly too!
Also have a log burner for our large/cold living room - about £20pm in logs for that in winter.

TheOxymoron · 25/01/2019 07:55

Approx £2000 a month through winter but less in the summer.
8000sq ft property. 6 bed, 7 bathrooms and all air conditioned. 2 gas fires. Indoor pool so that works harder in winter.

TheClitterati · 25/01/2019 09:40

that link was getting messed about by my phone Blush

I'll try again - £100 Bulb referral link here:

bulb.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4834935b227d653db6d9f1a11&id=3acc7e9abf&e=29ce79c4a4

Boysandbuses · 25/01/2019 09:45

3 bed terrace

In winter it's £30 electric and £50 gas.

But that's more than I use. I am over paying at the moment so that of something happens and I can top up my meters I have a good months worth.

grannieanne · 25/01/2019 12:52

2 bed detached bungalow in Hampshire, £55 pm both, work from home quite a bit. Have a log burner too which saves loads as I have a free wood supply

SushiMonster · 25/01/2019 12:59

These threads are so dumb.

OP why don’t you take your actual useage figures and plug them intk a comparison site?

You can then check you tarrif, you could also check to see what your iseage is compared to the ‘expected’ useage for the size and two of property.
