To shamefully ask how much you pay for gas and electricity

As the title suggests..

I have an average sized 2 bed house.

British Gas, for gas and electricity used to be charging us £65 per month but suddenly my direct debit the last two months is now £98 per month.

This seems extortionate.

We have the house set to 18/19 degrees and often turn up to 20 if it's particularly cold.

Am I paying the norm or is this overpriced?

4 bed detached and we pay £120 a month - we are very liberal with our usage too

Bumbumtaloo · 24/01/2019 19:14

We pay £86 a month with British Gas. End of terrace 2 bed bungalow. We are here 24/7 though. And have two school age DD’s. We do have the heating on a lot, if I get cold it makes my chronic illnesses worse.

My account is nearly £500 in credit at the money though, I do have a quarterly bill due at the beginning of February and will get a refund when my account is reviewed at the same time. I’ve worked it out to be approx £140.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 24/01/2019 19:14

Oh I have a referral code if anyone does a comparison and Bulb comes out top for you - we both get £100 credit in our accounts if you sign up!

HalfBloodPrincess · 24/01/2019 19:15

Mines quarterly around £300 electric and between £50-£100 gas. Had the heating on almost constantly since December though as working from home so dreading the gas bill this time.

Live in a large chilly 3 bed in south west wales

Iownabigvase · 24/01/2019 19:15

Oh and there's no one home for two full days a week. So that usage is only for 5 days a week .

Toomanycats99 · 24/01/2019 19:16

@ £65 maybe you have been underpaying a while and there is arrears to catch up on. Mine varies between £70-£90 depending on surplus / deficit I have built up

EmeraldShamrock · 24/01/2019 19:16

Fsmily if 4, 3 bed house, We use 35euro electric on a prepay metre, tank of oil was 725euro in October, it will last the year unless the snow comes back
It is still a very expensive outgoing.

poorbuthappy · 24/01/2019 19:16

3 bed 1950s semi with extension and serious upgrade in insulation in loft when we did extension £115 a month for both.
No restrictions on heating. If we are cold we turn it up

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 24/01/2019 19:17

About £300 dual fuel. Large, old house.

Horses4 · 24/01/2019 19:18

£89 gas and £39 electricity. 2 bed flat with two children, one of whom has chronic ill health so keep heating on constantly when we are in but off at night and when we go out.

AliTheMinx · 24/01/2019 19:18

We have a 5 bed, 3 storey detached, town-house style new build. We're with British Gas and pay around £30-£40pcm for electricity and currently around £70pcm for gas.

Gth1234 · 24/01/2019 19:19

check the rate card for what you are paying per therm/kwh, or whatever, and have a look on a comparison website.

There's no gas in our village. We pay over £100/month for electric and about £800 or so pa for oil.

TreesoftheField · 24/01/2019 19:21

3 bed semi, 1 person WFH plus 2 toddlers so heating on constantly.
£65 a month for both. I highly recommend shopping around, I haven't used any of the big companies for 5 years and my bills are always low.

Celebelly · 24/01/2019 19:21

£120 a month in four-bed detached, but we both work from home.

IdleBetty · 24/01/2019 19:26

British Gas £103 for both.
I think it's a rip off and considering a switch.
3 bed mid terrace, all out at work during day.

Needafriend2019 · 24/01/2019 19:28

We moved 12 months ago and I'm shocked how much more were paying. It's about 80 a month electric and 70 a month gas for a 4 bed semi Mon-fri no one in from 8.30-4 most of downstairs is open plan and it hardly ever feels toasty warm.

Lightsabre · 24/01/2019 19:29

TreesoftheField, who is that rate with please?

Elderflower14 · 24/01/2019 19:30

We pay £110 a month for oil. We are well in credit with that. £40 a month for electricity.

AllSuits · 24/01/2019 19:30

Nothing! I signed with a company that had a 'refer a friend and get £50 free' so I put my referral link on social media and 14 strangers signed up.

£700! But on average for my 3 bed semi, it's £40pcm for gas & electric. But I'm really mindful of energy use. Nothing left on standby, I batch cook when I use the oven, temp. is 18, only heat the room I'm in, no lights left on etc.

MotherOfDragons90 · 24/01/2019 19:32

I’m in a two bed terrace and we pay about £30 pm for electric and £25 pm for gas (and that’s based on our bill over winter, it’s less in summer. So £55pm

wendz86 · 24/01/2019 19:33

2 bed house £54 a month .

SciFiScream · 24/01/2019 19:37

3 bed semi detached. 2 adults and 2 kids. Kids now full consumers of electricity with smart devices etc. I work from home 2 days a week. Someone in the house 4 days out of 7. Our combined bill is £60 pcm. We're with bulb I think. We change suppliers all the time and if they contact us to put direct debit up - we refuse! We're almost always in credit. On the rare occasion we haven't been in credit we've paid the £20 and kept the direct debit the same. Our use always goes down in summer.

Bennyismydog · 24/01/2019 19:37

2 bed house, it’s a new build so very good at holding in heat. I paid £42 a month for both last year this year. I finished the year £27 in credit and this year my quote is £38 a month combined.
But my house is a small modern 2 bed. If I run the oven the house is warm for about an hour after.

Bennyismydog · 24/01/2019 19:39

When I lived in an even smaller stone cottage it cost me £100 a month and never felt warm.

chillpizza · 24/01/2019 19:45

£125 per month electric and £46 gas. British Gas three bedroom property.
