Dogs in coffee shops?

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

Sitting in a very pleasant club/cafe/restaurant/bar called The Kennels having lunch. We have ours lying at our feet hoping for a speck of smoked salmon. There is also a retriever, a pointer, two whippets and a Cockapoo. All being terribly civilised. There are three children about 9 -12 years who are being loud and intruding on others peace.
Nobody seems to have succumbed to a serious malady.

"True about labs, teenage boys though are definitely in the top 3."

I have one of those as well...and invest in quite a bit of air freshener. Grin

If they're solely intended for humans then why are so many cafe owners happy to allow dogs? If there's a sign on the door saying dogs welcome then they obviously want to attract dog owners. It isn't that difficult for dog haters to go elsewhere considering that in most parts of the UK the majority of cafes and restaurants do not allow canines.(Assistance dogs aside)

I'm hoping to have my own business in a year or two. It'll be pet friendly. Animals will be very welcome. People who complain about dogs not so. They can go to another place.

It doesn't bother me, although I guess it's not entirely hygienic especially if one were to jump up at the table or counter? But it does bother my daughter as she's terrified of dogs. She's getting better but for a while it would've been pretty traumatic for her (and everyone nearby until we were able to leave, she can be very loud!)

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 15:49

I wasn't a brat, my folks could take all 3 of us anywhere. We knew what sit down & behave meant, & it took 'the look' to remind us, nothing more. I don't have an issue with kids being out in places, i think it's a great idea to get them used to things early on - which i did with mine. I do however have an issue with parents who disassociate themselves from parenting when in public then wonder why people get cross.

Have yet to be anywhere with dogs trashing the place/throwing food around/running riot whilst their owner blissfully ignores them...

Dog owners on a chilly dog walk could choose to buy a travel mug and make themselves a coffee, drink it finish the walk, take dog home then go out for a coffee.

Oh yes, I could carry a travel mug for a 3-hour cross-country hike, climbing over stiles, gates etc, often lifting the dog over if there's no pophole, and still have a nice, piping hot mugful of coffee by the time I reach the halfway point of my walk. Hmm

And why would I take the dog home and then go to the nearest coffee shop, 1.5 miles away, for a coffee when I've just been for an 8-mile walk?

LakieLady · 26/01/2019 16:03

I'm a manager in a High St bank and people trying to bring dogs into branch has become a real issue lately.

Are dogs not allowed in banks then? I had no idea. Mine has been in Nationwide, Santander, Barclays and Lloyds, and the only time anyone had an issue with it was in the Milton Keynes branch of Nationwide.

I was surprised about that, as we'd been in at least 2 other branches of Nationwide without any problems, but I assumed it was because it had an entrance that led straight into the shopping centre, where dogs aren't allowed.

They could have told me dogs weren't allowed before I'd stood in the queue for 15 minutes though!

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 16:07

Why were you taking a dog into a bank? Did it want to check it was getting a good return on its ISA? Or pay in a cheque maybe? It's a fucking dog. It doesn't have a fucking bank account.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 16:08

Similarly with dogs in bookshops, they're clearly not buying, are they?

JacquesHammer · 26/01/2019 16:09

God you’re still labouring under the impression you’re funny aren’t you? I thought you were a parody but you’re not are you?

Oh dear.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 16:11

I'm not funny. I'm perfectly serious. What possible business does a fucking dog have in a bank? I don't go into kennels when I need to rearrange my tracker mortgage.

JacquesHammer · 26/01/2019 16:14

I'm not funny

Thank goodness you’ve admitted it.

Your best post so far. Certainly the most interesting.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 16:16

I'm honestly not joking. Confused

Lockheart · 26/01/2019 16:17

Babies and young children don't usually have bank accounts, that doesn't mean they can't go in.

Presumably the person they are with wants to use the bank. It's not complicated.

Thewarrenerswife · 26/01/2019 16:17

@HaroldsSocalledBluetits

What business does a child have in a bank? Do they check the return on their ISA? You don’t go to a nursery to arrange a tracker mortgage.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 16:19

Again, banks are part of the built environment designed for people. Children are people. Dogs are not. If you want to take your dog for a walk, take it to a field. Not your local branch of Santander.

EnoughSnowAlready · 26/01/2019 16:19

I'm making a note to get some Dog Haters not welcome signs for my future business. I'd much rather look at some lovely dogs than the faces of all the dog hating lemon suckers on here.

December2018 · 26/01/2019 16:20

@HaroldsSocalledBluetits
I've never heard so much twattery in my life!
Go and make yourself a brew and pipe down!

There is always one isn't there!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/01/2019 16:21

Worse are the “all dogs like me” and think they can miraculously cure my dog of itsinnate shyness

It angers me so much, budgie! They are prepared to risk themselves, their children - and my dog! - just to prove how very lovable they are Hmm.

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 26/01/2019 16:25

Yes, those of us who want built environments for people to be built environments for people are obviously completely outlandish in our demands.

Well here’s an idea. If you don’t want to have a coffee in a coffee shop that allows dogs why not, and here’s where it’s obviously tricky for you, go to a different establishment with different rules?

We have a lovely branch of Santander frequented by a nice chap and his guide dog. I’m presuming they have no business in a “built environment for people” either?

EnoughSnowAlready · 26/01/2019 16:30

Again for the 500th time, there are plenty of restaurants, cafes and other businesses that do not allow dogs. Use those. It's common sense. It'd be like me going to a café that has activity tables, highchairs everywhere and toys and complaining that there's too many toddlers in the place. Common sense would dictate that I go to one of the many other cafes because the owners of this particular one obviously want to attract parents with toddlers and are making an effort to do so.

athrobbingpairooftrousers · 26/01/2019 16:32

What's obvious here is how bloody quick humans are to pigeon hole into one camp or the other based on extremes. Can we at least agree, that in all walks of life there are assholes and let's group them as such so that the rest of us can all get along.

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 16:49

Fuck off & sit in an environment that doesn't welcome dogs then. Not exactly difficult is it...
