Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

I don't have dogs and one of my DC is quite nervous around dogs but I don't have an issue. As long as the dogs are under control it's fine (same rules as for kids I guess!)

athrobbingpairooftrousers · 26/01/2019 10:21

Well behaved, well trained dogs are a delight however in my experience, most dogs i've encountered are not well trained and the owners expect you to put up with that. It's annoying. Guide dogs are a delight because they are probably the best trained dogs around, they spend nine months to a year with a puppy walker before going onto intensive training. Can't say that for most other dogs. I like dogs fine but I loathe them jumping on me. This is usually followed by a pathetic 'oh I'm sorry, he's full of beans today' comment from the owner. Not good enough! Train your dog not to jump

BrylcreamBeret · 26/01/2019 10:26

Honestly I wouldn't be happy about it. How the hell do you drink your coffee/nibble your cake when you're busy biting snoots from loves?

I'm taking the piss obvs, I love dogs and prefer them to humans but there are so many people terrified of them that I can see why it's such a big issue for many people.

Elphame · 26/01/2019 10:35

I'm a manager in a High St bank and people trying to bring dogs into branch has become a real issue lately

Why? Lloyds was my bank since I started work way back in the 1980s. I rarely need to visit a branch but when I do it's an hour away so I combine it with other errands which generally involve walking my small and well behaved terrier. Lloyd's won't allow my dog to cross the threshold.

Luckily our local NatWest is only 15 minutes away and has never had a problem with my dog.

Guess who I bank with now?

Grinchly · 26/01/2019 10:37

I'd much much rather have dogs in a cafe than endure shrieking ankle biters and all their mess and paraphernalia.

Dog friendly child free cafe may be a runner as a business idea! Maybe erect a barrier also, to ensure perambulators can't be wheeled in...

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 26/01/2019 10:41

If I notice a coffee shop (or any establishment that sells food/drinks) allows dogs in I won’t go in. Dogs are unhygienic; I don’t want to be eating or drinking anywhere near them.

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 10:58

I'm 😱 at the poster who claims someone having a guide dog in the work place is the main reason she quit. I mean, really?! Should all blind or partially sighted people not work now either???

Places ask before handing out dog treats. And most hygiene conscious places wash their hands afterwards. If they don't then i'd say even without dogs in there you should find a new place to eat...

MrsRyan15 · 26/01/2019 11:07

@Icequeen01 I am one of your people. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I will go into a place just because there are dogs in there that I want to befriend!

Blimey, so the dogs killed the High Street?

And here I was thinking it's was online shopping and high business rents.

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 11:48

Glad it wasn't just me that heard that info...

Mercurial123 · 26/01/2019 11:49

Let's blame Brexit on the dogs as well 😉

Good thinking Batman

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 11:51

I've found a new way to keep people out. Welcome dogs 😁 sounds like my ideal tbh. Now if i could welcome dogs without their owners i'd be laughing...

pepperjack · 26/01/2019 12:01

They're not working in the kitchen and their feet are no dirtier than your shoes.

Worsethingshappenatsea · 26/01/2019 12:12

@Elphame yes Lloyds here ! Its for insurance purposes.
"We are not permitted to have animals on the premises other than assistance dogs for the safety and comfort of our staff and customers " is the phrase we use.

I personally wouldn't mind the odd well behaved dog popping in and out whilst owners like yourself are running errands but we can't make exceptions . But to try bring a dog to an hours appointment - I asked her if she would take her dog to a doctors or opticians appt for example and she said of course not don't be ridiculous !

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 26/01/2019 12:39

Every single one of those allows Guide dogs in

So that’s you never eating out again, isn’t it? And never going food shopping either.

FrancisCrawford Guide Dogs are obviously an exception, considering they’re exceedingly well trained in all departments.

Lockheart · 26/01/2019 12:53

@WhatToDoAboutWailmerGonaRogue do you think guide dogs are magically more hygenic then? Your original post said "If I notice a coffee shop (or any establishment that sells food/drinks) allows dogs in I won’t go in. Dogs are unhygienic; I don’t want to be eating or drinking anywhere near them."

So either you think guide dogs are somehow cleaner or don't shed (which is untrue - gold retrievers which are often used for guide dogs are notorious shedders and are soft mouthed), or you don't think dogs are that unhygienic anyway if you're happy to sit with guide dogs.

It's completely logically inconsistent to object to some dogs on the basis of hygiene but not others, when they're all the same.

Elphame · 26/01/2019 13:05

@ Worsethingshappenatsea I appreciate it isn't under your control but It seems a very short sighted policy. It's cost Lloyds both my personal and business accounts and since the changes to the Avios credit cards I'll be moving my credit cards away too. It's pretty much the final nail in the coffin following the closure of all the accessible branches around here.

I was head of financial planning for a fairly high profile accountancy practice and it was fairly common to have a dog attend with clients. Meetings could be a lot longer than an hour too. I normally take my own dog when visiting my own accountant. I was told off once for NOT bringing him!

Thewarrenerswife · 26/01/2019 13:10

YUABU

I'd much rather sit in a coffee shop where there there are dogs than kids. I have kids and dogs so I can say that. Dogs tend to just sit quietly.... kids especially toddlers do not.

We also have a holiday cottage which we rent out. I prefer to welcome dogs than kids. Dog owners tend to be more responsible and leave the property in a better state than those who bring kids. This is my experience after 8 years of letting.

There are also no laws in the UK that prevent dogs being welcomed in restaurants, providing they are not in the food prep area.

Finally, people who don't like dogs are weird. Even the Grinch had a dog.... Grin

Closetbeanmuncher · 26/01/2019 13:37

Grim.... YANBU

Unless it's a guide dog they shouldn't be allowed in and certainly not behind the counter.

I love dogs but come on ffs.

Deadbudgie · 26/01/2019 13:57

Schadenfreude I feel your pain our dog is very cute but very shy of people she doesn’t know and hates them touching her. Usually she will just move out of the way of people ignore us. But kids crawling under tables where she is effectively cornered elicits a good growl, parents and kids often shocked. Well what do you expect. We’ve said no she is shy. Worse are the “all dogs like me” and think they can miraculously cure my dog of itsinnate shyness! My dog is not there for your amusement -yes she might look very affectionate to us, our young son, friends but as a stranger you’ll have to give her a few hours to warm up to you I’m afraid.

I’ve often wondered about leaving it 10 min an running up to the sleeping baby in theses people’s pram, plucking it from the peak and giving it a big cuddle cos all kids like me😜.

We have a lead that says “nervous” which seems to have stopped all but the most pushy!

Unfinishedkitchen · 26/01/2019 14:00

Maybe they’ve started allowing dogs in to put off the NCT lot who arrive in big groups nursing one tea whilst feeding their kids snacks brought from home, taking up a whole area and leaving devastation when they leave.

I’d rather go into a cafe with some dogs in then an NCT group any day.
