Dogs in coffee shops?

fedupntired · 23/01/2019 10:45

Is this a thing now? I've previously seen dogs in clothes shops and today am in a coffee shop (which sells food) and two dogs have been welcomed with treats from behind the counter.
I own two dogs - but ew!

If i had a dog i know i wouldn't take it into a cafe. Entitled or what

I think it's entitled to expect dog owners not to be able to have a drink or a meal when they are out with their pets just because you don't want to share space with a dog.

Why should people who dislike dogs get to call all the shots?

You have a dog - fine - go to a cafe where they are welcomed.

You don't like dogs - fine - go somewhere they aren't.

Pissedoffdotcom · 25/01/2019 22:54

There are more places that do not allow dogs than that do. How is that entitled for dog owners to take advantage of that?!

Laiste · 25/01/2019 22:59

Wouldn't want to go to a cafe with dogs in it.

And i've no idea why dislike of dogs is always so often immediately countered with stories about children.

If a person says they don't like monkeys or cows or something it would it be logical to say 'YABU! And monkeys and cows should be allowed in cafes because kids can be such little shits!' Confused

What? Hmm It's ... odd.

Laiste · 25/01/2019 23:00

illogical

Pissedoffdotcom · 25/01/2019 23:02

But you don't get monkeys or cows in public spaces so it's irrelevant. The excuses for not wanting dogs in cafes are identical in most cases to behaviour that children exhibit. So it is relevant.

I don't like clowns, personally I think they should be illegal. But that is irrelevant because you rarely see a clown in a cafe thank fuck

JacksonPillock · 25/01/2019 23:03

If a business chooses to let dogs in, that's their decision. Don't like it? Go somewhere else. Easy.

Crummyfunnymummy · 25/01/2019 23:09

Dogs = filthy animals. Absolutely HATE being anywhere where dogs are unless outside (and even then I’m constantly yelling at my children not to run on the grass as there will likely be dogs’ poo there. Sad but true!) My BIL has two massive dogs which he insists come everywhere with us (Xmas, family holidays..). They stink! Ugh. Thinking about them is making me do my sour-lemon face 😂

Laiste · 25/01/2019 23:13

It's not irrelevant. A dog is simply an animal some people choose to own. Being in an open public space with a dog is unavoidable. Sharing a space where you're eating or shopping is different. Some dog owners think everyone else should accept them as an inevitability. Even in an eatery or a shop. I don't know why.

Great if you love dogs, crap if you don't. It feels like some people have forgotten that or don't care.

RedDwarves · 25/01/2019 23:16

When I was in Scotland last year, I went into several pubs where people had their dogs inside. Bloody brilliant, I think. They're more likely to get my patronage if they are dog friendly.

I work for a bank and we allow dogs inside (Australia). One of our members of staff brought their golden retriever puppy in for several hours a day every day until she got too big. Customers loved it.

EnoughSnowAlready · 25/01/2019 23:17

You're right, I don't care. So long as you have the option of the many cafes and shops that don't allow dogs I really don't give a toss if you choose to complain about those that do. You have other options, use them. Likewise I don't complain about shops and cafes that don't allow dogs, I go to those that do.

Pissedoffdotcom · 25/01/2019 23:27

Haven't forgotten, just don't care. As above, you have far more choice over where to go that doesn't allow dogs than i do that does allow dogs. So yeah, i genuinely don't care when someone moans about dogs being in a minority of places.

Worsethingshappenatsea · 25/01/2019 23:28

I'm a manager in a High St bank and people trying to bring dogs into branch has become a real issue lately.

Had a few customers kick off when politely asked to leave and we had one lady turn up for an appointment to open a current account with a dog in tow! She couldn't believe it when we told her we would not be seeing her and she must rebook her appt. It's not as though it's a touristy area full of dog walkers or anything - more like city suburb shopping precinct 😂

It's fine for dogs to be in cafes and restaurants just not in the food preparation area. There are a lot more places that don't allow dogs than places that do. I love a dog friendly cafe myself, lovely to stop mid walk for a coffee while dog snoozes under the .

I do know that a lot of dogs are poorly trained though and spoil it for everyone else. I've spent a lot of time training dog. We walk frequently on a shared use path, he is off lead, if I see a walker or a bike I call him back in, he comes. The amount of people who stop to tell me how amazing that was is unreal..It's not, I just called him to heel, basic stuff. It's sad to think that it's unusual to see a well behaved dog! So I do understand people's reluctance about meeting dogs in public places.

Coloursthatweremyjoy · 25/01/2019 23:50

Not sure what happened to the word *table there.

IvyChime · 26/01/2019 03:45

I'm uneasy around dogs, but I dont mind being around them in shops because the only ones I've ever seen in shops or pubs etc were either incredibly well behaved or quite good but taken outside if too excited. I've never seen an irresponsible owner do it, if I had id probably feel differently.

They're better behaved than most children in my experience Wink

You're quite right about Keswick. I holiday there 4x a year especially because it's so dog friendly. That was my single reason for choosing to holiday there many years ago for the first time, I read an article saying it was the most dog friendly place in the uk. I now spend 4 weeks a year there and the reason I keep returning.....because I can take my dog in pretty much every single shop. So the local economy there is benefiting from a result of their collective decision. I'm sure I can't be the only one who holidays there for this reason.

Ragwort · 26/01/2019 07:37

I don’t like it either, where I live we only have a few coffee shops and the ‘best’ one does allow dogs. As others have said, if the dog sits quietly under the table then it’s not too bad but more frequently they are moving around and (some) dog owners are worse than proud parents with their over indulgence of their dogs and the assumption that everyone wants to stroke or pet them. And owners that feed their dogs from their plates, yuck.
I run a shop & although we politely have a sign up not allowing dogs (we have a small range of food) most dog owners ignore it and in the interests of good customer service I tend to not say anything - do dog owners generally check before bringing their dogs into shops?

Ragwort · 26/01/2019 07:41

Red you might ‘love’ it if a colleague bought her puppy to work but I would be horrified to have to work in an environment where someone bought their dog to work. Years ago I did have to work with a colleague who had a guide dog so obviously that was completely different but I felt really uncomfortable working there & it was one of the main reasons I eventually left.

comebacksoonsusan · 26/01/2019 07:42

And i've no idea why dislike of dogs is always so often immediately countered with stories about children.*

I always wonder this too. Seems a deflective argument. I don't really have a horse in this race as I don't mind dogs here and there (I do think there should be a license), but it's a lazy counter to the discussion to compare dogs to children.

Pissedoffdotcom · 26/01/2019 07:43

When i had my dog if a shop or cafe didn't have a 'no dogs' sign i'd take her in. But i never caused a fuss if asked to leave. If it isnt obvious i'd chance it.
People ignoring obvious signage are arseholes

artisanscotcheggs · 26/01/2019 07:49

🙄

Dogs are great.

crunchie12 · 26/01/2019 07:52

I love it. I love Keswick - favourite place on earth. They're so dog friendly, it's wonderful.

AJPTaylor · 26/01/2019 07:53

I am yet to meet a badly behaved dog in a coffee shop. Round here there are some coffee shops, pubs and restaurants that allow dogs. All of the dogs sit under the table and snooze and await fallage from above. Bit of a fuss and pet from other patrons.
