Bought a mirror online and the backing has got really rough edges. I assume it's MDF and read somewhere that mdf is dangerous. Would it worry you that the edges hadn't been finished properly in case it got breathed in? You can't see it from the front so doesn't effect the look of the mirror or anything.

I tend to get over anxious about things so am hoping some random internet people can show me how normal people think!

Mdf dangerous?? I really have heard everything now. No it wouldn't bother me and that doesn't look unfinished to me at all.

The shavings would be dangerous if you were breathing the dust in a sawmill.
There is nothing to worry about in this case

It's only dangerous when it's being cut and the fibres are floating about. Dh is a joiner but he wouldn't work with mdf because apparently (it's not real wood).

There is nothing to worry about. I imagine if you were sawing it all day every day you wouldn't want to breathe it in but your mirror is not dangerous.

The majority of coffins that are cremated are made from MDF. Not dangerous for the deceased or Funeral trade people Grin

It’s advised that you should wear face protection if cutting/sawing MDF because it’s made from wood fibre and glue, neither of which is good for your lungs if you inhale it. If you are not cutting or sawing it, then there’s no problem.

Op is correct, that mdf can be dangerous if you breathe in shavings from it, if it contains formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
I think it's probably ok on your mirror op, you're not going to be breathing in the dust from it.

MDF dust is abrasive to your lungs, if you are cutting it you are supposed to wear a mask.
That doesn't look like MDF, but if you are concerned just paint it with clear nail varnish or PVA to seal it.
