Would this worry you? (Pic)

Bought a mirror online and the backing has got really rough edges. I assume it's MDF and read somewhere that mdf is dangerous. Would it worry you that the edges hadn't been finished properly in case it got breathed in? You can't see it from the front so doesn't effect the look of the mirror or anything.

I tend to get over anxious about things so am hoping some random internet people can show me how normal people think!

Thanks for that jimmyhill I couldn't remember it's proper name, it's particle board as a pp reminded me.

heartfull83 · 24/01/2019 09:37

Thanks. So reading up on it particle board is also contains formaldehyde. I realise it's everywhere in the home and in a lot of products.

Is it normal to see products with rough edges like this (where the particle board is not on display?)

Forgive the blunt response, but it is perfectly normal in cheap, mass produced products. Some rough edges will not cause you any problems unless you plan to agitate the particles and inhale them.

To be honest, one application of nail varnish (which leaches formaldehyde straight into your bloodstream, without any of the filtration one gets from stomach and lungs) is probably doing you more damage than the back of your mirror ever will.

QuestionableMouse · 25/01/2019 16:40

It is 100% normal and fine.

It isn't going to hurt you. It is safe.

You need to stop worrying about this because you're only making your anxiety worse. If it makes you feel better, my dad is almost 80, in good health (apart from a dodgy knee) and spent his entire working life (15-66) working with every variety of wood going.

Are you confusing it with MDMA?

Stop giving this mental space, seriously. it's not a problem but your anxiety is ruining your life experience.

If I could lick this mirror and then listen to The Prodigy for eight hours straight, that would be no bad thing.

I cant do it just now, but I'll find a link for you to the Health and Safety Executive report that they did when the issue of working with MDF (which yours isn't) were first raised, and they were asked to consider whether it should be banned. This was more than 20 years ago, and the findings were that it didnt require to be banned, but guidelines needed to be put in place for working with it (meaning cutting and causing dust and fumes, and MDF is still widely used now. They looked at various boards - the board you have is in an "inert" state, the fibres wont affect you in that state.
