Would this worry you? (Pic)

Bought a mirror online and the backing has got really rough edges. I assume it's MDF and read somewhere that mdf is dangerous. Would it worry you that the edges hadn't been finished properly in case it got breathed in? You can't see it from the front so doesn't effect the look of the mirror or anything.

I tend to get over anxious about things so am hoping some random internet people can show me how normal people think!

Mdf dust is dangerous, but certainly not from your mirror. If you were to spend lots of time cutting it and exposed to the dust cloud you would need to wear a face fitted dust mask and have extract.

Dust, in particular mdf dust is a hot health and safety subject in construction currently, at least in our area.

But honestly op, that’s not dust, it’s just a bit rough.

ladyratterley · 22/01/2019 16:17

No offence but if you're anxious over things like this you may need some help. It's just a normal mirror.
I don't say this flippantly, I've had GAD.

Maryjoyce · 22/01/2019 16:29

Mdf is only bad for you if breathe in when it’s cut and I have bad feelings it will be the next asbestos health problem of the future.
However it won’t do u any harm unless you decide to cut or sand it without full breathing mask

LuckyLou7 · 22/01/2019 16:33

Nothing to worry about unless you are intending to file down the rough edges and breath in the dust.

Is your anxiety reaching unmanageable levels? Then no amount of people telling you it's okay will help.

Roussette · 22/01/2019 16:36

Since when has MDF been dangerous? Shock

OP, don't worry. Really don't.

cantfindname · 22/01/2019 16:39

If it worries you then go round the edges with tape.

Houseonahill · 22/01/2019 16:41

MDF isn't dangerous? I mean I wouldn't recommend eating it but

heartfull83 · 22/01/2019 16:41

Is it actually MDF? I have assumed that. Some of you saying it doesn't look like MDF - what do you believe it to be?

OP posts:
DontCallMeCharlotte · 22/01/2019 16:41

MDF is dangerous? All those people that went on Changing Rooms way back when must be totally fucked!

It came out about the MDF "dust" while Changing Rooms was still on, which is why Handy Andy (God love him) started wearing a mask.

Sonders · 22/01/2019 16:44

It's a fibreboard, either medium density fibreboard (MDF) or some other density. Not even slightly dangerous as it is, no matter how much you want to convince yourself.

That said if you want to return it for not being the quality/material you expected, go for it. That's why shops offer returns.

Tomorrowisanewday · 22/01/2019 16:48

I work in construction - that's not MDF. Fibreboard (sometimes known as particleboard) perhaps, but not MDF. MDF achieves it's density from the glues which hold the fibres together. This is where the danger comes from - from the dust formed when it's cut if you breathe it in.

Roussette · 22/01/2019 16:51

If you're not planning on cutting up the back of the mirror, why are you concerned about it? Just hang it up and forget about it

QuestionableMouse · 22/01/2019 16:55

I'd be more concerned about painting the entire back of said mirror with nail varnish.

It's fine, like having a lump of coal in your house is fine but working in the coal mine might cause problems.

showmeshoyu · 22/01/2019 16:58

It's ok, it's not MDF, it's asbestos.

heartfull83 · 22/01/2019 17:06

Is that a joke @showmeshoyu ?

showmeshoyu · 22/01/2019 17:11
Hmm
MamaLovesMango · 22/01/2019 17:15

Thank goodness Handy Andy was spared. I only saw Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen flouncing around on the TV last week so he appears to be safe and well too 🙏

Loubymoo27 · 22/01/2019 17:31

This can't be real??? If it is, OP you need serious help!!! Are you this anxious over everything!???

M3lon · 22/01/2019 17:37

MDF in that state is not something I'd have around children to be fair. But as the clearly knowledgeable poster has pointed out it is particle board not MDF, so you don't need to worry about particulates of that type. Sawdust itself isn't great but this isn't the type of item that is going to be putting wood dust in the air either.

If you are worried about it scratching your walls then I would send it back becuase its shoddy as fuck..or maybe sticking a layer of sticky backed plastic on it....

JingleJake · 22/01/2019 17:40

What is your worry sorry?

Fightingfit2019 · 22/01/2019 17:41

You’ve been told by many on here- it’s fine.

Bobbybear10 · 22/01/2019 17:46

I am on my mobile so can’t see any kind f your posting history (it’s also bad form) but do you have anxiety or other mental health issues at all?

M3lon · 22/01/2019 17:53

OMG the OP says in the OP that she suffers from anxiety...nobody is getting a medal for diagnosing her with...Anxiety!

Hoppinggreen · 22/01/2019 17:53

It’s fine, just don’t lick it
