Is there anyone who just eats normally?

I can't believe the amount of threads where the OP claims to eat only a boiled spinach shake for breakfast, plain cous cous for dinner and a salmon fillet with veg for tea. With of course, only an apple as a snack in between.

Is there anyone like me who just has a bowl of cornflakes for breakfast, a meal deal for lunch and then whatever I can be arsed putting in the oven for tea? I'm beginning to wonder if I'm massively unhealthy in comparison to most or whether people are just making this up.

kaliforniaDreamz

Processed bread, no fresh condiments, processed meats, non fresh ingredients etc, crisps oily & processed.

None of it is real food.

Pursefirst · 22/01/2019 14:51

I'm so unbelievably jealous of all these food diaries. I would love to eat like that, but I would absolutely, without doubt, pile on about 10 stone in a month.

I use My Fitness Pal to track my meals and I count macros (so at the moment, I'm eating 25% carbs, 35% fat and 40% protein). I'm eating 1500 cals a day, with a refeed day of 1850 on Saturdays. If it sounds grim, then yes! It absolutely is! This is what my day looks like so far:

Post early morning gym session: protein shake (hideous)
Breakfast: 2 hardboiled eggs (rank and smelly)
Lunch: chicken breast with veg (dry as paper and extremely boring)
Dinner: either prawn or yet more chicken stir-fry with a miniscule amount of brown rice and a tablespoon of good two-shoes no palm oil or taste peanut butter.
Pre bed: yet another hideous protein shake

There is no way that anyone who eats like me can say that they really enjoy eating like that, I mean come on. I'll go back to drooling over the normal food diaries now (shakes fist at you all)

gottachangethename1 · 22/01/2019 14:51

Totally agree with posters who believe the majority of ‘what have you eaten today’ threads are very exaggerated or have posted on a day when they are being saintly. The HUGE salads also make me laugh. Would love to see faces of dc and Dh if I served up just a big salad after they’ve been at work all day and we eat pretty healthily.

marymarkle · 22/01/2019 14:52

Don Sandwiches are not junk food. They are bread with fillings, some healthy, some not.

KaliforniaDreamz · 22/01/2019 14:53

purse that's how anyone thin that i know (over 40) eats.

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 14:53

I've said over and over that normal was not the right word for the OP, apologies.

More like, is there anyone who isn't a complete health nut with everything they eat i.e me who can't be bothered putting much thought into what I eat (which I have said in my previous replies) and so just choose as convenience as you say?

I've not said it's healthy or that I think it is. I'm sure a dietician would be horrifed at my subway and crisps.

i do worry about my sugar fetish

Pursefirst · 22/01/2019 14:58

I forgot about the 9 billion cups of tea I drink. And the 3 litres of water that I force down throughout the day. Yes, I do spend approximately half of my day in the loo.

WunderBlah · 22/01/2019 14:58

To me normal eating is eating all the foods, none of this XYZ free or self flagellation. Most of the people I know seem caught up in some strange control experiment depending on the latest trend. It's boring. Food is lovely why use it as a method of punishment?

I have total respect for actual life threatening illness affected by food. I do not care if your 2 calorie free from special holy water cake tastes just like a jaffa cake, I eat actual jaffa cakes.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 22/01/2019 14:58

I used to not think about what I was eating but I cant maintain a healthy weight like that. So I'm eating very healthily and losing weight.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 22/01/2019 14:58

I think dieting and eating healthy is hard work ! So it’s needs encouragement

Eating a pasty is easier Grin

That said most of my office eat healthy now

It’s kind of the norm

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 22/01/2019 15:00

I don't eat normally unless you count eating when hungry rather than set times. I will wander into the kitchen feeling vaguely rumbly and see if there is Something I fancy, if nothing really grabs me I will make some toast or take an apple and some cheese until later.

I have a SIL who is obsessed by whatever diet she is on, and although athletic, she looks as if she has spent years in a concentration camp. It is a control issue. So I don't consider people who live on a handful of kale and some seeds to be eating properly.

I may not eat what people would call properly but I do eat a balanced diet, I don't avoid sugar or butter, but I don't eat meat, and avoid palm oil and sweeteners.Read labels on everything.

Eating only when you are hungry can keep you at a normal weight without resorting to eating a fad diet. Embrace the proper food, people used to be healthy on normal food, until normal food was messed about with.

Fad diets and trends are not a normal diet.

goodwinter · 22/01/2019 15:01

The thing is (and I'm not being sanctimonious, because my diet can be as bad as the next person's at times), looking at some of the comments above, what were calling a "normal" way of eating is full of sugar, simple carbohydrates, fat, etc etc. If you care about your health, you shouldn't really be happy about going days without eating any vegetables or fibre or lean protein. This "normal" diet will leave you susceptible to so many health issues.

Nobody needs to just eat spinach and kale and quinoa, ffs, but why not eat a balanced diet including occasional treats?

RedForShort · 22/01/2019 15:01

I think the week's meal plan/what I ate today threads are great. The former is heavily burdened with homemade items and the latter littered with either huge portions or just one meal.

Huge is quite subjective.

I've a strong memory of a person who was 'starving' then they ate a 'huge' amount from a take away (shared between lots of us). They ate so much that were 'bursting'. It's memorable for me because they ate just six cocktail sausages with the ends cut off. I know other people sharing the same take away who'd eat six (whole) cocktail sausages and not even notice they have. Saying that i doubt I'd have noticed if they hadn't made a loud show of how much they'd eaten and how incredibly full they were.

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 15:01

Someone shared something on Facebook today saying 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels'.

She's clearly never had a starbar!

Don't get me wrong I have absolute respect for those who are trying to lose weight and are doing so. It takes a lot of will power! I just find MN one big guilt trip when it comes to food!

NaturalBlondi · 22/01/2019 15:02

OP, your diet IS the norm though. You’re not in a minority. People eat trash and that’s why the majority of people are fat

goodwinter · 22/01/2019 15:02

Oh, and being at a healthy weight while eating a shitty diet isn't an indicator of actual health and isn't anything to be jealous of. You could stay at a healthy weight eating 1500 calories of crisps every day, doesn't mean it's what you should be aiming for.

Pursefirst · 22/01/2019 15:04

@Peanutss (whispers) I have a fridge magnet that says that! Ok, ok, I'll get my coat now.

1sttimeunicorn · 22/01/2019 15:05

I eat normally! I write on the 'what did you eat today' threads with my normal eating :)
I've always eaten normally, am currently expected DC2 so I suppose I'm eating a bit more carby stuff that I'm craving.
So I'll usually have cereal and/or toast for breakfast, a mid morning cake type thing at work, a sandwich and crisps for lunch, an afternoon fruit type snack after work when DS is having the same after nursery, and then dinner will be whatever I feel like making - a normal dinner, chilli, spag bol, whatever works. and plenty of hot/cold drinks.

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 15:06

If you care about your health, you shouldn't really be happy about going days without eating any vegetables or fibre or lean protein

I don't, I have veg with my tea most nights. I have fruit most days (eating grapes as we speak). I just don't live and breath it. If I go a day without eating some fruit I don't punish myself over it.

I also have a chocolate bar or a sandwich at lunch if I want one.

marymarkle
I still put sandwiches in the junk food list - it's the attitude towards food the problem. I teach my kids to eat seated at a table, and have a decent meal. Sandwiches are for travelling, days out or parties. They also have too much bread compared to the filling inside.

I don't want them to become obsessed with snacking and not being able to spend 3 hours without eating something.

There are enough birthdays, parties, days out and holidays when we eat junk food, no need for them at all.

DonCorleoneTheThird · 22/01/2019 15:07

I don't, I have veg with my tea most nights

but that's once a day! It's easier when you don't consider a meal without them - so at the very least lunch, diner and some snacks if you really must snack in the afternoon.

Peanutss · 22/01/2019 15:08

Oh, and being at a healthy weight while eating a shitty diet isn't an indicator of actual health

I haven't said it is.
