Walkers for me. None of that fancy posh stuff.

yolofish · 20/01/2019 22:27

I also really like those veg crisps. And for me, a veg is only acceptable if it is a) pureed carrot with masses of butter and cream b) roasted with herbs 'n shit c) asparagus with hollandaise sauce d) frozen petits pois e) parsnips roasted with parmesan. The rest, I just tolerate. Potatoes is different, of course. Incidentally, potatoes parboiled, tossed with polenta and then roasted in goose/duck fat are THE BEST!

Anniegetyourgun · 20/01/2019 22:46

Eee, smoky bacon. Tragically we are a crisp-free house at this moment in time.

Pence links Trump’s push for a border wall to Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy

On the eve of a holiday commemorating the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Vice President Pence seemed to liken President Trump’s push for a border wall to the civil rights leader’s legacy.
Speaking Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” the vice president quoted from King’s “I Have a Dream” speech as he defended Trump’s latest pitch to secure funding for a barrier along the United States’ southern border. The budget impasse over the wall has resulted in the longest government shutdown in history, one that has left thousands of federal workers without pay.
“One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King was, ‘Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy,’ ” Pence said. “You think of how he changed America. He inspired us to change through the legislative process, to become a more perfect union.’
“That’s exactly what President Trump is calling on Congress to do,” Pence continued. “Come to the table in the spirit of good faith. We’ll secure our border. We’ll reopen the government and we’ll move our nation forward as the president said yesterday to even a broader discussion about immigration reform in the months ahead.”

Linking the Border Wall and MLK. Now I know I'm living in an alternate universe. Or Pence is.

Probably Pence.

Roussette · 21/01/2019 07:45

A sensible article from Fox. Yes really!

www.foxnews.com/opinion/forget-about-a-border-wall-trump-and-congress-should-agree-on-these-immigration-policies-that-work

^The $5 billion President Trump wants to spend on a “big beautiful border wall” is not a wise use of your hard-earned tax dollars.
President Trump’s claim that opponents of his wall are calling for open borders and want to allow gangs of rapists, murderers and terrorists to stream across our southern border to attack Americans and flood our communities with dangerous illegal drugs is hype.

The scary images conjured up by the president are designed to create a crisis atmosphere where no crisis exists, so his wall can gain public support and so he can pressure Congress to approve funding for the wall.

But let’s get real: There are already more than 650 miles of barriers on our southern border. Building a wall would not address needs such as: more robust training for the Border Patrol; new infrastructure and additional personnel at ports of entry; physical barriers where they make sense at key locations along the border; and a border policy that strengthens commerce and our nation’s economic competitiveness.

The truth is that far from there being a crisis on our border, unauthorized immigration is actually down 13 percent from its peak in 2007^

Ffs, just seen that Alexandria ocasio
Cortez has tweeted in support of mermaids!

Gumpendorf · 21/01/2019 08:57

More Fox common sense.

Chris Wallace presses Pence: "You could open the government tomorrow" ... "Isn't it really that you just want the leverage?" twitter.com/mattshuham/status/1087018774153310211/video/1

What precisely does he want to do with the $5.7bn anyway? Does anyone know?

It's Tyrrells lightly salted crisps for me. Or Walkers ... well done on getting rid of the trolls. I don't have the patience to argue.

Lweji · 21/01/2019 09:21

There's a reason Trump wasn't able to secure funding for his wall when GOP had both Houses.
It's always been his wall.

Gumpendorf · 21/01/2019 09:27

Pain. It was Mermaids - a charity supporting transgender kids.

Apparently today is #BlueMonday, the saddest day of the year?

This weekend one guy raised over $340,000 for Mermaids by playing Donkey Kong online and uniting the world behind trans kids and the trans community.

Thanks to @Hbomberguy, this Monday is awesome!!

Lweji · 21/01/2019 09:37

I'm not surprised she did. It's part of the support all minorities package. Not sure most people who do have thought it all out properly. But there's a factor of appearing to side with the extremely conservative right if you don't support all things transgender.

Anyway...
A critical analysis of Chris Christie's book on Jared's stupidity. And about Jared's stupidity itself.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 21/01/2019 09:55

Sorry gumpendorf, I wasn't clear that I knew she didn't mean the mythical creatures Grin

The charity has questionable aims and processes eg still signposts to a doctor that has been convicted for running a clinic without a licence. They also push for early intervention and provide training to people with young children that contradicts safeguarding practice (they encourage confidential disclosures, discourage information sharing).

The founder of Mermaids has said she thinks psychological assessments shouldn't be required before children undergo surgery and has also said there shouldn't be any age limits for surgery (ie a child of any age who was had competency could have surgery but how you'd know they were competent if you're advocating for no psychological assessments is beyond me) and took her own child to Thailand because they were underage for surgery, that is now no longer legal in Thailand either as the Thai government have since changed the law and introduced a higher age limit.

I'd be wary of endorsing without more research, so it's disappointing to see AOC either hasn't done due diligence or thinks these aren't issues to be concerned about.

Gumpendorf · 21/01/2019 10:06

I did wonder Pain. Smile
I do try and steer clear of transgender issues normally and I had never heard of Mermaids but someone retweeted that into my timeline. I share your concerns. In this case I'm sure her involvement contributed the large sum of money raised.

I like AOC but I'm not surprised she's embracing this.

Sleipnirthewonderhorse · 21/01/2019 10:25

Yet more on the Covington Catholics - apparently they're maligned little darlings (in their own opinion) twitter.com/jaketapper/status/1087137470670663680

or, in the opinion of someone who can be bothered to watch the whole video
twitter.com/KrisColvin/status/1087150374031626240

And I still think they go on weird school trips. My kids are about the same age, and go on trips to study coastal erosion on the Norfolk coast, not on marches trying to control the bodies of the opposite sex.

MerdedeBrexit · 21/01/2019 11:30

Sleipnirthewonderhorse - thank you for that link, I see I am by no means the only one reading the boy's statement who doubts it is all his own work.. That stuff about saying a prayer really stuck in my gullet.
I was at a Convent High School in the Sixties and early Seventies - once in the Sixth Form, I'm sure we'd have been dragged along to a Pro-Life (or anti-abortion) demo if they'd had them in London at the time. Although maybe not, the most exciting educational school trip I remember was walking to the local common to dig up earthworms for our Biology class.
I stand by my crisp choice and am not going to lower myself to entering into a discussion with the naysayers amongst you.

When Trump didn’t make it into CNBC’s list of top business leaders despite Cohen‘s work to manipulate the rankings, both Trump & Cohen called network execs to complain. Cohen threatened Trump would sue, saying CNBC was “ignoring the will of the people.”

A card for the federal workers affected by the government shutdown.

A-Mexican Express.

Roussette · 21/01/2019 14:27

Merdede I am standing with you on the crisp choice. Oh yeah man Grin

What I don't understand is... how the hell were these teens allowed to wear political hats on a school trip? (especially as the MAGA hat is the getting to be the equivalent of a white hood...) In my day (long time ago admittedly) no way could we have done that. When we were out on trips, we were representing the school and had to fit in with that.

MerdedeBrexit · 21/01/2019 14:42

Roussette - Solidarnosc Grin

I have a nasty feeling that those MAGA caps are representative of that particular school. I imagine a lot of Catholics may support Trump because of his and Pence's retarded views on abortion and sexual harrassment. That school is notorious in Kentucky for disgusting sexist, racist and homophobic behaviour, it seems. There's at least one Twitter thread about it, possibly someone linked to it here last night.

Lweji · 21/01/2019 14:49

It's kind of old, now, but did you notice something odd on that letter about the trip to Afghanistan? (Colbert did)
"Madame" Speaker?

It's even on the actual letter, by the White House, not DJT's Twitter.

On purpose?
Does he only know "madames"? Grin
Confused Nancy with Madame Macron?

I have to say that I actually agree with him, that they shouldn't be making such trips at this time, unless there was a very strong reason.

OTOH, I think the SS should shut down to minimum services, lock up the WH for safety and only allow Mueller in. Or just let the crowds in.

Should anyone be interested... here is a twitter feed by someone who has watched the whole footage of the Covington school incident and bit by bit commentary of what happened.

Whatever was said yesterday, the kids do not come come off in a good light.

Lweji · 21/01/2019 15:03

Catching up on Youtube.

Cold Open SNL.

Alexandria gets the SNL treatment. It's only downhill from here.

MerdedeBrexit · 21/01/2019 15:29

Thanks for that, Roussette. I've just seen that apparently CNN is backtracking and apologising for their coverage. Which is odd, in the light of that description of the long video.
Lweji, thanks for that SNL clip, good stuff Grin Loved the Nancy Pelosi mimicry!
