It's almost like they talk to the same advisor.

Oh wait...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 24/01/2019 09:49

It's uncanny, isn't it?

PerkingFaintly · 24/01/2019 10:05

TBF, the US shutdown is a very different sort of creature from what Moggy is suggesting, which is essentially a form of filibuster.

But asking the Queen to close parliament so that bills you don't like can't be passed...

I'm not sure what I think of Bercow's breaking with tradition and allowing the MPs a vote last week, but this wheeze from Rees Mogg is clearly well over the line. Not exactly in the spirit of democracy. And also pointless, because I don't see HMQ agreeing to this sort of shit.

So Nancy pelosi has made him back down over this state of the Union address, he has been bested by a woman this is going to make him feel furious and severely wounded, there will be steam coming out of his ears and he can barely think straight
not that he can think straight at the best of times

he will feel justified in taking some sort of 'big League' revenge against her
The most powerful man in the world, the ubermensch of alpha males is being faced down by a mere woman, his only option will be to go nuclear, well I hope it doesn't actually go nuclear
But whatever he does it will have to be scorched earth and that's going to make him look really bad, surely the games up now isn't it?

Lweji · 24/01/2019 14:32

As (I think) Colbert pointed out in a monologue, Trump has nicknames for pretty much every adversary/enemy, but Nancy is still Nancy...

Two powerful House committee chairs are planning a joint investigation into German lending giant Deutsche Bank, which is under scrutiny from Democrats over its business dealings with President Donald Trump.

This sums up Trump's relationship with Nancy. A strong woman and he doesn't know what to do.

CanadianJohn · 24/01/2019 16:19

Sorry to be a nuisance, I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I don't want to read a zillion Trump stories to find the answer.

The Repubs had control of both House and Senate for the first two years of the Trump presidency. Why didn't Trump fund his wall during those two years?

Wordthe · 24/01/2019 16:22

thanks for linking to that article @Roussette, very interesting read!

Roussette · 24/01/2019 16:26

Wouldn't we like to know CanadianJohn! And welcome Smile

Wordthe some of the comments below the article are very accurate and very little support of the Trump.

Wordthe · 24/01/2019 16:42

the world is full of nasty jumped up bullies like trump and they all felt validated as he stepped onto the world stage

now they watch as he is exposed for a fool and taken down by a woman we will hear the knocking of their knees as they realise we can all see through them now

Mr Colbert.

PerkingFaintly · 24/01/2019 18:01

Good question, CanadianJohn.

This article from April 2017 explains better than I can.

Trump signals delay on border wall funding to avoid government shutdown
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/apr/25/trump-signals-delay-on-border-wall-funding-to-avoid-government-shutdown

Although Republicans control both chambers of Congress, a funding bill will need 60 votes to clear the 100-member Senate, where Republicans hold 52 seats, meaning at least some Democrats will have to get behind it.

AcrossthePond55 · 24/01/2019 18:28

Perking's got it CanadianJohn. The Repugs didn't (and still don't) have enough seats to win by the 10 point majority needed to approve a spending bill. Other types of bills require only a 'simple majority' (ie 51 votes) but spending requires 60 votes.
