AIBU to ask why on earth is the Duke of Edinburgh driving at the age of 97.

OP posts:

I do wish people would RTFT. My point about him setting an example was a response to a question put to me by a pp.

If you could quote or @ them that would be helpful, because I left my crystal ball at home today Smile

Bluelady · 19/01/2019 19:26

@Boglingtoaswad, previous page, no crystal ball required. Just RTFT.

lavenderhidcote · 19/01/2019 19:26

Despite being accused of being ageist earlier on this thread I am old enough to remember being driven about without wearing a seatbelt, it was not at all comfortable as a passenger and I can imagine it is even less comfortable as the driver.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 19/01/2019 19:28

Think bluelady was answering to some of my Posts.

I did link the news article to the Duke's speeding story and threatening to kick the Queen out of the car.

BertrandRussell · 19/01/2019 19:29

“so going out for a drive is probably the only time he is out alone so it's a big loss of independence for him.”

He can take a carriage out alone any time he likes.

ExFury · 19/01/2019 19:33

@charlie97

It can. I believe the parameters are quite narrow, but it can be done. I know someone who was given one to get home from hospital after surgery but I don’t know the details. I assume it’s a balance between the safety of wearing it and potential extra damage done by it.

If he has an exemption then he’s better driving himself imo. There’s no big difference being unbelted in the drivers seat or passenger seat. He’d definitely be unreasonable too go unbelted in the back as he’d be endangering those in the front.

Charlie97 · 19/01/2019 19:35

@ExFury what could he possibly need to go out for? Shopping? Collect the kids? Work?

He doesn't need to be in a car at all!

But he won't be told.

brizzledrizzle · 19/01/2019 19:35

He can take a carriage out alone any time he likes.

I think the protection officers would stop him taking it on the road and it's not the same as being in a car. I don't think he should be driving either but I know I like the independence and being alone when I can go out in the car and listen to my music.

ExFury · 19/01/2019 19:38

@charlie97 I wasn’t passing comment on whether he should be out. Just that if he is exempt he shouldn’t be endangering anyone else by being unbelted with them.

BoglingToAswad · 19/01/2019 19:43

Think bluelady was answering to some of my Posts.

You think? You should KNOW!

HowlsMovingBungalow · 19/01/2019 19:51

Bogling Huh?

MakeItAmazing · 19/01/2019 19:55

Comments about Diana and Meghan are disgusting.

BoglingToAswad · 19/01/2019 19:57

Sorry howls, I was being just being light-hearted and telling you that you should automatically KNOW exactly what bluelady means.

I'll get my coat Blush

HowlsMovingBungalow · 19/01/2019 19:59

No worries Bogling Smile I get you now!

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 19/01/2019 20:08

Alexa

I think it might be relevant to the back story. When I read that he had retired to the cottage for his "health" I took that to be a palace euphemism for mental frailty.

Ali1ce. This was just your take on it. Doesn’t mean it has any basis in reality.

That's why I said "I took it to mean."

It might not be true, but given his the royals have managed such situations throughout history it's not an unreasonable assessment

StoneofDestiny · 19/01/2019 20:17

The silly old eejit needs to stop being idiotic - and give up driving. He has no need to drive and the 'loss of independence' argument is pretty ridiculous. He can go to any of his houses and huge estates and potter around undisturbed on his horse and cart. It's not his first 'accident'.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/01/2019 20:36

No one is above the law or immortal

The second's true, but not the first - as seen when court proceedings in the UK are listed as R (Regina) v. Whoever. The Queen is the law, so any proceedings brought against her would, in effect, involve her suing herself

Luckily, apart from the seatbelt issue, our current monarch gives the impression of being a steady, law abiding sort of lady ... whether future monarchs are the same remains to be seen

Clankboing · 19/01/2019 22:00

Oh dear. There's now a Daily Mirror post on Facebook. The lady with the broken wrist crying saying that there has been no apology. I can sense this will grow into a bigger thing.

StoneofDestiny · 19/01/2019 22:39

He's been given 'words of advice' by police about not wearing a seatbelt. If it was anybody not 'royal' it would have been a fine.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 19/01/2019 22:42

The Mail and the Telegraph are running it now as well ...

Smotheroffive · 19/01/2019 22:44

Jeez! What is going on with pp on this thread!!!
Repeatinband re-repeating stuff that's wrong but already been cleared up on the thread.

So much raging!

I have been involved, as have many, in incidents that totalled both cars....every, but every driver, unless detained or cautioned by police etc, are asap back on the road with courtesy/replacement car.

What IS this all about, all this hatred and vitriol.

I get that he's considered arrogant, etc, but all the horrible rubber-necking, gossip, and glaringly false speculation?!!

The awful falsificatiins on here aren't somehow justified simply because many consider him arrogant, or entitled.

The ageism, is completely off the scale.

Shocking and shit.

Charlie97 · 19/01/2019 22:44

He's been given 'words of advice' by police about not wearing a seatbelt. If it was anybody not 'royal' it would have been a fine.

And three points

Smotheroffive · 19/01/2019 22:47

If I had five drivers, I'd still want to drive, god theres a lot of back-seat drivers on here!

Being dazzled by the sun is a common cause of accident, its not indicative of senility or cause for ageism rage, or anything other than the road looking clear because of the way the sun reflects off the road at this time of the year in bright sunny cold days.

Charlie97 · 19/01/2019 22:48

@Smotheroffive steady, we are allowed our own opinion you know, not the same as yours!!

And ageism?? He's 97 years old and far too old to drive and a belligerent fool as well!!

MiniCooperLover · 19/01/2019 22:49

Stupid man has been caught today driving without his seat belt and 'been spoken too'. It takes a certain kind of bad driver to roll a Range Rover ....
