AIBU to ask why on earth is the Duke of Edinburgh driving at the age of 97.

So 97, is when ageism becomes acceptable on MN. Interesting...

budgetneeded · 17/01/2019 18:30

i hope everyone is okay (the guardian article didn't mention the people in the other vehicle).

feska5 · 17/01/2019 18:30

Just saw the car on the news. Difficult to roll a Range Rover I would think. He was very lucky to walk away from that.

5lnaBed · 17/01/2019 18:33

I don’t think it’s ageism to acknowledge the unfortunate limitations we face as we age.

partinor · 17/01/2019 18:34

No not ageism to acknowledge that few people would have the reaction times to drive safely at this age.

budgetneeded · 17/01/2019 18:35

where my mother lives (quebec) medical test and vision exam at 75, 80 and then every two years. along with driving exam.

PortiaCastis · 17/01/2019 18:35

BBC news says the people in the other car were treated for minor injuries

SirGawain · 17/01/2019 18:35

Quite right 5inaBed

He was in collision with another member of the public, we've been told how he is but no one has mentioned the other party.

Very poor behaviour.

Quick, quick you rubberneckers, get to Sky and salivate over pictures of the car, then rush back and give us your professional forensic updates

Hmm
TattiePants · 17/01/2019 18:39

It's not ageism to acknowledge that as we age our reactions, hearing, vision, movement etc deteriorates. The D of E is also in the very fortunate position that he doesn't need to drive himself.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 17/01/2019 18:41

Last vestiges of independence ?

woodhill · 17/01/2019 18:41

So do none of the Royal family need to pass a driving test or just Queen and Prince Phillip?

lolaflores · 17/01/2019 18:43

There is an age limit to start driving. Does it mean that the period u drive for is I definite? Just wondering

partinor · 17/01/2019 18:43

plainspeaking Yes but one that many elderly people have to give up as they are no longer safe to drive.

CuntyBumpkin · 17/01/2019 18:44

The Queen was issued a licence when she was in the forces in the war i believe @woodhill

Justbackfromnewwine · 17/01/2019 18:46

I’m thinking exactly what I would be thinking if I read or heard of any 97 yr old being involved in an accident, where they pulled out of a drive and hit a car overturned.
maybe they shouldn’t be driving

SleepingStandingUp · 17/01/2019 18:46

He's bloody lucky to have walked away injury from an overturned car at 97.

As far as I can see there's nothing about who was to blame or enough information to deduct it was Doe due to old age

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2019 18:47

It is entirely possible the accident didn't happen because he is 97 but one that could have happened to anyone who was driving at the time.

speakout · 17/01/2019 18:48

I'm very surprised he wasn't taken to hospital to be cheked over......

CatnissEverdene · 17/01/2019 18:49

Both parties walked away unhurt.

It was a minor collision.

Nothing to see here folks.

Unescorted · 17/01/2019 18:49

He was doing the Bird Box Challenge - second career as a You tube vlogger.

Charlie97 · 17/01/2019 18:49

If a 97 year old whose reactions due to his age and inability to react in good time, hit, hurt or killed by child because the wanted to keep their independence, o would not be responsible for my actions.

My friends father at 88 wanted to keep his independence, however after being in the car with him my friend realised it wasn't safe. He had to have the conversation with his father saying the car needed to be given up.

The rules and sense should apply to everyone, no matter your standing.

Taking out a vehicle that you're not able to control is like taking out a loaded gun.

CaptainCabinets · 17/01/2019 18:50

Ah I bet he’s mortified, can’t be too harsh on him. He’s almost 100, he’s not been very well for a while and perhaps now he’ll start winding down a bit. Just glad nobody was seriously hurt.
