With a nick name of albie?
My friend is horrified and thinks I am very Unreasonable.
I think it’s adorable.

I think it's horrible.

However, there are two babies I know round here called Albert, and I don't know many babies at the moment.

So I might be wrong and you might be right!

Squarethecircles · 14/01/2019 23:30

I've got a teenage Albert - his name is considered v cool with his mates!

ImportantWater · 14/01/2019 23:31

I like Albie. I love Bertie. Not massively keen on Albert for myself but wouldn’t think twice about it as a child’s name.

ImportantWater · 14/01/2019 23:31

When I say for myself I mean for any future child of mine!

Lovingbenidorm · 14/01/2019 23:32

I think it’s a lovely name.

HildaZelda · 14/01/2019 23:32

Sorry OP, but the first person that springs to mind for me is the uncle from "Only fools and horses"

Gunpowder · 14/01/2019 23:33

I know four or five under 7 I think it’s trendy!

Seline · 14/01/2019 23:34

I like it.

Kpo58 · 14/01/2019 23:34

Go for it. He can always change his nickname later if he wishes. Albert is a good name to shorten in various ways.

Excited101 · 14/01/2019 23:34

Isn’t it Pippa M’s baby’s name?

Whatjusthappenedthere · 14/01/2019 23:34

I know of 2 Albies ... my 74 year old fil and my friends 1 year old grandson. Suits them both.

PawPawNoodle · 14/01/2019 23:34

If you want him to be called Albie, then name him that. Albert is a very stiff and old-fashioned name, and I imagine he'll get teased for it in school ("prince albert" in reference to the penis piercing, for example)

merrybloominchristmas · 14/01/2019 23:35

terrible and if it wasn't 'trendy' at the moment you wouldn't even consider it

User758172 · 14/01/2019 23:36

Albert Steptoe... or Uncle Albert...

No, I wouldn’t, not a fan.

EncroachingLoaf · 14/01/2019 23:36

I considered it briefly for DS2 as I like a lot of traditional old man type names.

In the end I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I really don't like either Albie or Bertie and Albert just sounded too stuffy. Basically, I couldn't imagine myself yelling it in the supermarket.

Your choice though. There are far worse names out there.

Tillytrotter123 · 14/01/2019 23:37

I think it’s a beautiful name.

ElvisParsley · 14/01/2019 23:37

There's loads of Albies around here. DS is 13, and there was at least one in his baby group, so not exactly recent either.

Cheeeeislifenow · 14/01/2019 23:41

It's cute!

JustAPenny · 14/01/2019 23:56

Albie makes me think of the Amish, the not so nice ones. Eww.

ImportantWater · 14/01/2019 23:58

It’s such nonsense that school children will know what a Prince Albert piercing is. A John is a toilet, if you want to go looking up definitions, but no one is thinking ooh better not call my son John in case they call him a toilet at school.

RosemarysBabyDress · 15/01/2019 00:00

it's like any name, people react differently when it's just a name and when it's an actual person and you accept them. As long as it's not ridiculous, a made-up badly spelled or poor attempt of a joke, it's always fine.
Most people reaction vary depending on who the name remind them of - positively or negatively.

When you say Albert I think of the Prince of Monaco -nothing terrible!

Xmasbaby11 · 15/01/2019 00:00

It's pretty popular I think - I know 3 under 7s. I don't think it would stand out so go for it if you like it!

Tony2 · 15/01/2019 00:01

It's quite amusing seeing a name criticised because it's trendy, they mostly are. Goes around, comes around tho. Captain pugwash, ere bert, yeah 'arry. Those individual connotations, Oliver, the currently commonest, a Dickens character, or a damn fine actor and career drunk. Albie, Bert, Bertie, why not? Go for it.

User758172 · 15/01/2019 00:01

@ImportantWater

You’d be surprised what they know these days!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 15/01/2019 00:03

My cousins son is called Albie he’s 7 now and my dad had an uncle called Bert. I like the name it’s cute. It’s your baby OP call them what you like.
