Albert? Yanbu. Perfect!
Albie/Bertie? Yabvvvu. Nooooooooooo!

SaucyJack · 15/01/2019 00:06

I prefer Bert as a diminutive, but it’s a fine name- and very popular at the mo.

He isn’t going to stand out next to all the Alfies and Archies.

ThePoliticiansPraiseMyName · 15/01/2019 00:13

I know a guy called Albert Hall... I think his parents were vvvvvu!

My dog is called Albie, I think it's cute but cute in a dog way.

I wouldn't call a child it, sorry.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 15/01/2019 00:14

I like Albert but can't stand Albie, sorry. Bertie is nice.

GariBaldybiscuit · 15/01/2019 00:34

It's a fine name and one with a bit of scope - Albie, Bert, Bertie or even just Al.

PawPawNoodle · 15/01/2019 00:45

@ImportantWater children are in school until 16-18; I knew what a Prince Albert was as did all of my friends and I know certainly that many of them would have referred to an Albert as that, much like a boy named Tom was called 'shit' after people in the year learned that the rhyming slang for it was 'Tom tit'.

But yeah I clearly meant 5 year olds in my post Hmm

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 15/01/2019 00:55

Albert is nice. Albie is silly.

BeachtheButler · 15/01/2019 01:44

OK, provided you don't call any future DD Victoria - that's just weird.

SheAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 15/01/2019 03:17

Not massively keen on Albert, preferable to the dreaded Albie though.

Ohnonotuagain · 15/01/2019 03:23

It seems to be quite a popular name at the moment so I'm not sure why your friend is horrified, unless that's why?

This is why sometimes it's best to bit tell people your thoughts on names as you don't always hear what you want to.

Ifangyow · 15/01/2019 03:45

You can name your baby whatever you wish as long as its legal. What do others opinions matter? I think Albert is a nice name, although I can see where others are coming from with the connections.
One of my husband's friends grandson is called Len. I asked him one day if that was his actual name, as it seemed a bit old fashioned for his age group. It turns out that his name is actually Cohen, but people started calling him Leonard, due to the actor Leonard Cohen, but has since been shortened to Len.

hammeringinmyhead · 15/01/2019 03:52

Can't get past Albie the Racist Dragon from Flight of the Conchords...

flumpybear · 15/01/2019 06:37

Albert is ugly and Albie is cute but I couldn't think a 45 year old Dr or Solicitor being called Albie
Burt is horrid too .... leaves Al really for a grown man

Helmetbymidnight · 15/01/2019 06:38

I think it’s lovely.

Einstein did ok with it...

Suziepoozie · 15/01/2019 06:44

Another person here who came to say about Albie the racist dragon..

I like Albert. I detest nicknames as names so personally I would do what you’re planning and shorten it. Don’t really like albie but it’s up to you (and him eventually) what you use as a nickname

Oysterbabe · 15/01/2019 06:46

It's incredibly popular but I hate it and think it will date badly. It's a very 'of the moment' sort of name.

redyawn · 15/01/2019 06:49

Not my personal taste but that is irrelevant. Nothing wrong with the name so YADedinitelyNBU.

okokokok · 15/01/2019 06:49

I think it is really cute! Lots of shortened versions available for when he is little then Albert as a more serious name for the land of work when an adult.

okokokok · 15/01/2019 06:51

I have never heard of a prince albert piercing till this thread. I very much doubt most people would associate the name Albert with it!

Rafabella · 15/01/2019 06:54

It amazes me that people actually ask for opinion on something so personal as naming their child! Of course views will be split - causing more doubt for the OP.

Unless a name is offensive or just plain wrong chances then it will be equally liked and disliked. Regardless, as soon as the connection is made between the person and the name everyone will get on board. Go with what 'you' like.

For the record though this poster thinks Albert / Albie / Bert / Berti / Al / B (I know a Quentin who is simply known as Q) are all cool names. Smile

Loseitandkeepitlost · 15/01/2019 06:57

The first thing I thought of was a Prince Albert!

I really don’t like it, but we’re all different. I just can’t see Albert ever suiting a teenager and I’m sure he won’t want to be called Albie by then!

MarchInHappiness · 15/01/2019 06:58

Albert is on trend at the moment with a lot of other 'old man' names (Arthur etc), so its hardly unusual. Your friend is probably out of touch.

That said I loathe Bertie as nick name, and I am not keen on either Albie or Albert. But I do not like those types of old fashioned names.

Romanov · 15/01/2019 07:06

If you want him to be called Albie, then name him that. Albert is a very stiff and old-fashioned name

Don't put a shortened name on a birth certificate, why limit the child?
Most names go through cycles of popularity and people like different ones

I'm not keen on Alfred, Albert, Stanley but they're all comng back
