It's very trendy, which would put me off a bit, but is still a nice classic name with a cute nickname.

I'm guessing your friend doesn't have any DCs, or she'd know a little Albie or two already!

BertieBotts · 15/01/2019 07:12

Albert is "Grandad chic" - old enough to be a trendy baby name now.

If you like it, go for it, but it won't be unusual. See here: www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/articles/babynamessince1904howhasyoursperformed/2016-09-02

Why don't you just call him Albie if that's the name you like? You can't decide nicknames you know. Call him Albert and that's what the teacher will read out of the register on his first day of school.

spidey66 · 15/01/2019 07:17

Jarvis Cocker's young son is called Albert. He will always be cool in my eyes.

Beamur · 15/01/2019 07:20

I know a toddler Albert. It's a perfectly nice name, fits with the still current style of using names that have skipped a generation.

PippilottaLongstocking · 15/01/2019 07:21

It’s lovely, I know a few small Alberts and they’re usually called Albie or Bertie

Pigflewpast · 15/01/2019 07:22

I quite like it BUT it’s very popular here. He would be one of many at nursery, school etc. That would put me off.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 15/01/2019 07:23

Bloody love Albie/Albert!

I know two Alberts, both shortened to Albie and I think it’s a lovely name!

(I also love Artie/Arthur)

Icouldbehappy · 15/01/2019 07:23

Sorry, I think both Albert and Albie are awful. I personally don’t like “old man” names and as another poster said, I can’t imagine a teenager wanting to be called Albie.
My DS is 11 and he knows what a Prince Albert is; as do all his friends.

strawberrisc · 15/01/2019 07:24

I just don’t like way it sounds. I’m funny that way with words.

Nnnnnineteen · 15/01/2019 07:24

Nn Bertie, yes. Albie is not a nice name. It sounds like algae, and just makes me think of a child whose parents put him in holey jumpers with mismatched wellies and smile when he sets fire to the cat.

picklemepopcorn · 15/01/2019 07:27

20 years ago I risked calling DS Archie. There were none around, old fashioned names hadn't come back in. Now Archie, Alfie etc are totally standard.

Go for it.

sdaisy26 · 15/01/2019 07:28

I know several Alberts who are mostly known as Albie or Bertie. I’m surprised so many people have been negative as it is back in fashion like Ivy, Arthur etc. - people’s grandparent & great grandparent names that are being rediscovered. Like I imagine Colin and Barbara will be the names of choice by the time our dc have dc.

It’s a perfectly nice name but not that unusual if that’s what you’re looking for. And if your dh doesn’t like it you probably need to go back to the drawing board.

strawberrypenguin · 15/01/2019 07:31

Albert is a lovely name. It's been on the way up the baby name charts in the last 5 years or so but I only know one. Lots of good shortenings as well.

CreakyBlinder · 15/01/2019 07:35

I think it's awful, as are any of the nicknames. I mean, Albie?! Just nope.

Wineismyfriend45 · 15/01/2019 07:41

Love it!

Inktank · 15/01/2019 07:52

Albert, Al and Bertie are fine.

I'm not keen on Albie and it sounds as if it's short for albino (nothing wrong with that but it isn't a name).

DaphneDiligaf · 15/01/2019 07:58

I wouldn't think twice about it, its no different to Charlie, Harry, George etc. I'd be very surprised if he's the only one at school. The new baby on Coronation Street is called Bertie I believe.

theWarOnPeace · 15/01/2019 08:02

I think it depends where you live and in what way you’ve come across it. I wouldn’t call it a horrible name in and of itself, but it’s become really very common where I live. It’s a bit of a joke that I’m every year group at out primary, the Alfie’s and Albie’s are the naughty ones. There are a few in each year! I know an Albert who is about 12 that does not fit this stereotype at all, he’s a lovely boy and it sounds cool on him. I wouldn’t choose it myself though, because it has become ‘rough’ in our area.

Pk37 · 15/01/2019 08:05

I don’t like old people names for kids but Albie is cute

CrochetBug · 15/01/2019 08:09

I know of 1 Albie. Not sure if it's short for Albert though. (Well I know 2, but 1 is a dog)
I know 1 Albert. He's 102.

BusterGonad · 15/01/2019 11:12

I don't like it, sorry op but I don't like old man name for kids. Arthur, Frank, Archie, Sidney.... they are not for me but he's your son and if you like it then go for it.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/01/2019 11:15

I'm not fond of the name, so wouldn't opt for it myself. But I don't find it horrifying or unreasonable that you or anyone else would choose it. It's just not my cup of tea.

RogueV · 15/01/2019 11:16

I love it.

LucyFox · 15/01/2019 11:27

I like it - go ahead :)
