Do your teenager's bedrooms look like this?

thingersandfumbs · 14/01/2019 17:44

Just that really. My teenage DD lives in an utter shit pit.

So, aibu to care? For context, DP encountered our dog with a used sanitary towel in his mouth a few weeks ago, from DD's shit tip.

I'm no clean and tidy queen, I promise you that, but to me this is unacceptable. Aibu?

Yes, clean up required. They do need help to be organised and we have set rules like no drinks or food (except water) upstairs.

upsettraintraveller · 14/01/2019 20:53

My step sons room looked like this. Not a teenage though. 33!

BillywilliamV · 14/01/2019 20:54

I remove towels and empty dishes from my DDs’ rooms every morning, It gets a bit grim but they know I wouldn’t put up with anything like this

RomanyRoots · 14/01/2019 20:54

This was covered on page 1 Grin

It's disgusting, but just like many a teens bedroom.
Completely unacceptable to us, but fine for them
Suggest a good balance of clean with untidy, rather than dirty and untidy.

ChesterGreySideboard · 14/01/2019 20:55

That’s what my room looked like as a teen but I keep my house very tidy now.

LadyFlumpalot · 14/01/2019 20:55

Mine wasn't too bad but it did take me til my mid twenties to get properly tidy.

I did have a school friend however who's room was so bad you couldn't see the carpet at all. She had dogs and cats who were in and out of her room all the time. I helped her tidy her room one long day and when we got down to carpet level there were little wiggly worms 🐛 meandering around in it.

ForAMinuteThere · 14/01/2019 20:56

'I’m sorry but how small is her room??

I think YABVU to expect a teen girl to manage in that glorified cupboard!'

Not everyone has the privilege of large rooms. This is a ridiculous thing to say.

Stompythedinosaur · 14/01/2019 20:56

My bedroom looked like that as a teenager. I am quite normal now!

SuziQ10 · 14/01/2019 20:56

I'm 28 now. But I lived with a girl at uni who's room was like this. From 18 - 22 we lived in student houses and her room was like this, absolutely horrible. It stank too and people (even friends) would call her a dirty bitch behind her back.

I get that teenage girls can be messy and careless with their stuff but this is grim.

Light11 · 14/01/2019 20:59

It made me chuckle at first the whole thing, you are naughty for putting this up online !

We all had shit days when we were teens. But buried in the piles of clutter there is a little cry for help there. First she is drinking too many WAAAY too many sugary drinks and she needs to spring clean and maybe re-consider her storage. Handle-with-care give her a hand, looks like she needs it. x

babysharkah · 14/01/2019 21:00

That is properly grim. Looks like my student flat when we drank too much and smoked a ton of weed

Canibuildasnowman · 14/01/2019 21:01

Clothes and books or whatever everywhere is one thing but the rubbish and used cups bottles etc is just filth. I’d give DD an hour to clean it up before going in with a big black bin liner and fecking it all into the bin. Clothes and all. I’d then put consequences in place if the room is dirty again - messy is one thing but dirty another.

Propertywoe · 14/01/2019 21:02

The rule in my house is if you want privacy you keep your room tidy. Luckily they like their privacy. I just get paranoid of rotten food hidden in the piles.

civicxx · 14/01/2019 21:02

absolutely disgusting. I would honestly tell her she has the weekend (or any 2 days she can commit to doing her room) to put the radio on & clean the shit tip up or you'll be taking 3 big bags to her room & whatever is left on the floor will be in the bin.

Not acceptable.

Although a teenager shouldn't need a reward for tidying their room maybe you could think of something small as a token incentive!

missmouse101 · 14/01/2019 21:03

How gross. Very lazy on her part. In this house pocket money is dependent on a weekly bedroom tidy.

Mondayjustaboutmadeit · 14/01/2019 21:06

My DSs room was like this... nasty nasty. My room as a teenager - yeah I can't really talk, I didn't really get the clean floor thing until I had my own flat - now that was immaculate.... my DPs were suitable shocked!

yorkshirepud44 · 14/01/2019 21:06

I couldn't rest if a room in my house looked like that. The photos alone are making me itch.

Mess is one thing but that's filth and I wouldn't want the flies or ants that lot will inevitably attract.

Canibuildasnowman · 14/01/2019 21:08

Shudder to think of the creatures living in that room with her, roaches, silver fish, mice. Just saw that she’s 18 - that’s appalling.

Desmondo2016 · 14/01/2019 21:14

YADNBU. Her room is vile and she idols enough to take more care. I've been there. My dd moved out at 16 due to my constant nagging. My house my rules. I'm not a dictator and my rules weren't hard to meet. I didn't expect pristine, just litter in bins, clothes in the laundry and food/dishes brought downstairs. She was unable to maintain this. I stopped her boyf staying over until she got it back in a decent state and kept it like it. She got in a pissy and moved out. I was distraught but 3 years later our relationship is great, her and said boyf own their own home and she is a lovely housekeeper! I'm not saying your dd should move out lol but in hindsight I wouldn't be able to change a thing as my expectations were more than reasonable. Despite the grief at her independent stand in moving out, it was like a weight was lifted not to have to see/smell/know about the vile pit that was behind the often left-open bedroom door.

Desmondo2016 · 14/01/2019 21:15

Oh I thought you were gonna say 14. No at 18 I would definitely be issuing an ultimatum and sticking to it. She's a little old for a star chart!

VeryFoolishFay · 14/01/2019 21:16

My DD was much the same and it drove me mad. I had one very big shout about sanitary protection, saying that it was no one's responsibility but hers and she did take that on board. Shes 24 now always nagging her boyfriend to tidy up Smile

TeeBee · 14/01/2019 21:17

That's disgusting! Neither of my teenage boys' rooms are like that. To be honest, I don't allow it. I make them tidy it. I refuse to live amongst anyone else's mess. They're lucky enough to have nice bedrooms, the least they can do it look after them.

AnneofCleevages · 14/01/2019 21:17

No, that is awful. I would never have been allowed to have my room like that and as a result i do not allow either of my DC's rooms to get like either. I go into my teenage DC's rooms everyday and dictate for want of a better word what needs binning, what's needs putting in dishwasher, what needs hanging etc and I do a deep clean of their rooms myself once a week. Occasionally I shout up the stairs that I am doing a random room inspection and all you can hear is them frantically running into their rooms to sort them. A bit fear of god ish I'll grant you but they know i mean business .There is no way on earth I would allow any room in my house to get like that. Op , I'm not being rude but you need to get in there early doors Sat, wake her up, bring a roll of black bags and bottle of flash and stay with her until it's done. You are the Parent in this situation and it's your house. You make sure she cleans that room and respects your property or she starts losing privileges!

Lilmisskittykat · 14/01/2019 21:18

I wasn't tidy as a teenager but it was all clothes(usually worse on a Sunday after Saturday night out trying to pick what to wear!)... no food or rubbish and certainly no used sanitary towels on the floor.

It's disgusting

BackforGood · 14/01/2019 21:18

It's not unusual. Not great, but not unusual

This ^

All mine have gone through a phase of this. The older two have come out the other side and both keep their rooms beautifully now. dc3 is still in this phase however.
Except for the sanitary towel, that really is disgusting. I am quite laid back (clearly compared with a lot of posters on here Grin) but that crosses a line.
