There's a dog in my house

There's a Labrador in my house and I don't know where it's come from. DH appears to of left the back door unlocked by mistake, but it was shut? He's at work and knows nothing about it, I've just got home from work and I have acquired a dog. Collar but no ID tag. What is going on?! How did it get in?! Can labradors open and close doors? My little King Charles cavalier spaniel seems to think he's his new best friend so has obviously enjoyed this unplanned play date (thank god a friendly dog decided to break into my house and not an aggressive one) no idea how long this lab has been here but house has been empty besides our dog since 11am. Someone please tell me how this is possible. I'm baffled. Waiting for DH to get back with the car so I can get him to a vets before they all shut and see if he's chipped.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/01/2019 18:02

Looks healthy and well cared for

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:04

Oh that's weird. I can only see one pic and it's of the OP's own dog?

Pandamodium · 14/01/2019 18:04

My gran has dementia and a dog.

She hasn't carers but me and my mam visit four times a day between us to look after her and DDog. We are not "important" visitors like her cleaner and hairdresser so if she has only had us at visitors in her eyes she hasn't seen anyone all day.

Your neighbour could be in the same boat.

WatcherOfTheNight · 14/01/2019 18:04

Just read your update @Freezby ,I'd worry too ! My boy is 6 & still like a puppy,a big strong puppy at that .
Was there water & food ?
Is anyone looking out for this lady ? I doubt she can cope with a lab if she's as bad as it sounds ?

BagelGoesWalking · 14/01/2019 18:05

The RSPCA won't do jack shit and almost any other rescue is preferable to them (imo).

Perhaps leave a note with the lady addressed to "carer" or "family" with a summary of the situation and suggesting they contact The Cinnamon Trust. The trust try to arrange volunteer walkers in situations like these, but it is complicated by the fact she has dementia. She might, of course, just throw the note away.

I'm now singing 'there's a dog in my house' to the tune of 'there's a ghost in my house' Smile

Poor Dcat would have conniptions if a dog turned up in the house...

CottonSock · 14/01/2019 18:07

Don't post a picture. You could get people trying to claim him

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:07

Am I the only one who can't see the pics of the Labrador? Sad

Pandamodium · 14/01/2019 18:07

DGranny's dog since we are sharing photos. She is a lovely wee thing.

LostInTheColonies · 14/01/2019 18:08

It must be a black dog thing - I was working from home with sick DD languishing pathetically on sofa watching YouTube crap.

To the delight of DD & our 6 mo collie pup, and bafflement of the rest of a videoconf in the office, a random black dog let itself in for a doggy playdate through the back door ... The lovely dog subsequently taught our ddog how to escape apparently secure gardens as well as how to open doors 😁

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:09

Cotton any bogus claimers would have to know the area in which the OP lives.

And provide proof, as I'm sure she wouldn't let him go to anyone.

GnothiSeafton · 14/01/2019 18:09

She hasn't posted pics of the labrador on this thread. Just her own dog.

FifiLeBoo · 14/01/2019 18:11

Actually my Labrador can open doors, I have not yet successfully trained her to shut them though.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:11

She hasn't posted pics of the labrador on this thread. Just her own dog.

But Anitagreen can see a few pics of the dog? Confused

Fuck I'm confused Grin

malovitt · 14/01/2019 18:11

I can see photos of the Labrador.

GnothiSeafton · 14/01/2019 18:12

Oh. How odd. I can't see them at all, but I can see her Spaniel Confused

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:13

Same here GnothiSeafton Confused

Shednik · 14/01/2019 18:14

I can’t see the lab!

ILoveChristmasLights · 14/01/2019 18:15

Oh. Lovely for your dog to have had an impromptu play date 😁 and there are definitely worse things to come home to than a visiting lab...but very sad about the old lady and worrying about the dog. She really might not be up to caring for it anymore. If she wasn’t even looking for it, I wonder if she remembers to feed it? Mind you, it’s a lab,I don’t suppose it’ll let her forget for too long! Worrying if he keeps escaping though.

I think I’d let the local dog warden know as well as contacting ‘someone’ about the old lady. I don’t know who you’d contact in Wales, but if it were me I’d start with the local GP.

WorraLiberty · 14/01/2019 18:15

This'll be how it escaped.

It morphs into thin air when the mood takes it Grin

GnothiSeafton · 14/01/2019 18:16

@anitagreen - where is the picture of the Labrador on this thread? None of us can see it. Just a photo of the OP's Spaniel.

SavoyCabbage · 14/01/2019 18:17

I can see the photo on the app but not on the desktop site.

Freezby · 14/01/2019 18:19

Yes sorry all the pic was up for a little while but I asked MN to take it down after DH said I shouldn't be putting photos up of a vulnerable women's dogs for people to gossip at. Apologies for confusion. Thanks for all advice we're trying to sort it with the woman now, just can't get much sense out of her regarding her situation/carers and we don't want to cause distress
