To tell you all that oat milk is actually lovely?

Speaking as a non-veggie. I'd been uneasy about the amount of milk we get through for a while, but skeptical about alternatives. Tried oat milk at someone's house over Xmas, and it's amazing! Basically like creamy, comforting liquid porridge. Goes fine in coffee, makes the most amazing horlicks, and if anything is nicer than cow milk. (Long time poster, don't have shares in oat milk, promise)

Yes, I stopped buying the oatly one because of the non-recyclable packaging.

The innocent one is nice and has fewer ingredients and recyclable plastic bottles.

WingingWonder · 15/01/2019 22:45

Can you all stop buying it please —only half joking— I have a child who can’t have dairy and there is currently an oatly shortage because everyone is trying veganyary. It’s bloody hard 😡

MrMakersFartyParty · 15/01/2019 22:45

I am lactose intolerant and I love oat milk and I could never go back to milk now!

binkyblinky · 15/01/2019 22:47

I absolutely love it. I'm also a non veggie but I drink oat milk - it encourages breast milk stimulation which is great as I have an 11 week old, but I drank it before that.
Oatly does a 'barista' frothable milk which is amazing! Works in my aeroccino perfectly

AlexanderHamilton · 15/01/2019 23:40

Tolleshunt can you provide any info on that (source?) for me to forward to dd as it’s all clicking into place. She’s been having issues/ sugar cravings since moving into a house with a vegan and a lactose intolerant girl and they’ve all been drinking this.

Tolleshunt · 16/01/2019 01:13

Alexander it's just my personal experience, sorry, after years of issues, and then keeping a diary of food and symptoms. I have trouble balancing my blood sugar (come from a family of diabetics, although I don't have it myself, plus am a stresshead, and adrenaline affects blood sugar) and have to eat carefully to avoid rollercoaster blood sugar. I would never eat sugar or carbs alone, always have to balance them with a good amount of protein and fat.

I find it hard to do this without good amounts of full fat dairy. Cheese and yogurt are especially helpful. I am never without a couple of mini babybel in my pocket!

The plant milks don't have enough protein (or, I suspect, in most cases, enough saturated fat) to balance blood sugar. If I ever go a day without dairy I feel absolutely dreadful by the end. I somehow seem to need that heavy sort of protein.

Maybe your daughter could switch back to cow's milk products and see if it makes a difference?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 16/01/2019 06:52

Agree . It’s the closest sub and as you said great in coffee , tea and porridge

FamilyOfAliens · 16/01/2019 08:16

Try different brands or make your own. If the demand isn’t there, there will be no supply anyway.

GhostsToMonsoon · 16/01/2019 09:50

I think there must be a shortage because it's always out of stock when I do my online food order.

Branleuse · 16/01/2019 09:56

yeah its the nicest one but its so often sold out, while there are loads and loads of cartons of bloody almond milk, which is vile or all sorts of obscure nut milks which noone likes

wigglybeezer · 16/01/2019 10:09

If I was a bit more business minded I'd start an oat milk production facility in Scotland, I live in a big Oat production area, seems daft to import from Sweden... ( And not great for food miles).

Jenwiththecurls · 16/01/2019 13:19

I just tried oat milk on the basis of this thread (usually an almond/coconut girl). It’s amazing in coffee and hot chocolate and is now my new normal milk. Thanks OP!

No shortage in my supermarket... (Surely shops are prepared for Veganuary by now?)

arranbubonicplague · 16/01/2019 13:29

It's like buying food grade oat fibre - we must produce so much in Scotland/Ireland but you either pay £16 per kg in the specialist UK shops (mostly imported from the US) or purchase it from the US for a bit less even with the sky-high shipping cost. (I don't mean oat bran or anything other than oat fibre. It is erratically available in home brew stores but I don't live near them and the UK shipping costs are ludicrous.)

Branleuse · 16/01/2019 18:03

I went to asda today. LOADS of various plant milks, definitely a shortage of oatmilk though, 3 different brands of it sold out. Still managed to get hold of provitamil oat milk, and noticed theyve started doing their own brand too, so managed to get some

KatherinaMinola · 16/01/2019 18:07

Just tried this for the first time, to make cocoa. It is delicious - very creamy and sweet. I don't think I'd like it in tea for that reason, but will go well in coffee I think.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 16/01/2019 18:49

Wow, so many new converts! I know it's ridiculous to import it, but hopefully as interest continues to grow, we'll see the beginnings of a UK based industry (especially after Brexit Sad)

Has anyone tried Oatly whole or semi skimmed? I've only had the original version. Can you tell much of a difference?

PlatypusPie · 16/01/2019 19:43

Yes, Vitalogy - the Oatly Whole is good - not as nice as the Barista, but kept this dairy intolerant happy over the past few months of Barista unavailability.

Vitalogy · 16/01/2019 19:45

Thanks PlatpusPie

KatherinaMinola · 16/01/2019 20:17

Update: I have just tried it in tea, and I don't like it Grin

Branleuse · 16/01/2019 21:27

I Quite like it in tea

CatnissEverdene · 16/01/2019 21:32

If anyone knows anywhere in Gloucestershire where Barista is in stock, I'd be really happy! Tried Waitrose, Tesco, and Ocado but I've not had any since before Christmas and I'm getting crankier by the day.

Rude Health oat drink is quite palatable, and the chilled Alpro unsweetened oat milk but they are not a patch on the Barista in coffee Sad

HoppyHop · 16/01/2019 22:43

Read the title as 'cat' milk! Think I need to go to bed!
