To tell you all that oat milk is actually lovely?

Speaking as a non-veggie. I'd been uneasy about the amount of milk we get through for a while, but skeptical about alternatives. Tried oat milk at someone's house over Xmas, and it's amazing! Basically like creamy, comforting liquid porridge. Goes fine in coffee, makes the most amazing horlicks, and if anything is nicer than cow milk. (Long time poster, don't have shares in oat milk, promise)

Love Oatly Barista and Oatly Whole - the others can separate but are still nice.

DGRossetti · 13/01/2019 14:37

Have got Oatley Barrista from Sainsburys, Tescos and Morrisons. Morrisons hid it in the "free from" section, rather than the long-life milks where the others put it.

As I said, watch out for packaging.

A lot of people are saying oat milk isn't gluten free whereas the oatly website says they use gf oats so I thought it was ok?

We are oat milk fans in our house too, my only complaint is that when we use it to cook (becehemel sayce, scrambled egg etc) the food looks grey and unappetising, tastes ok luckily!

Takaras · 13/01/2019 14:41

It's sadly almost always out of stock when I go to the supermarket though

soulrider · 13/01/2019 14:43

In the US they use gluten free oats in Oatly, they don't in the UK.

spinn · 13/01/2019 14:44

Ah ignore me, was looking at American site not British! GB oatly is low gluten (below 100ppm) but not low enough to be classed as gf and suitable for coeliac (20ppm)

Snugglepiggy · 13/01/2019 14:46

Are the cartons recyclable out of interest?I have no problem health wise drinking cows milk but would consider an alternative, but am equally keen to cut down on landfill waste and we have used doorstep delivery milk in glass bottles for years.

Tolleshunt · 13/01/2019 14:59

I find the regular Oatly quite bitter, though I haven't tried the Barista. Unfortunately, we can't use it for DD, who has CMPI, as she is also intolerant of gluten. We use Alpro unsweetened roasted almond instead, though I am uneasy about the issues with growing almonds for almond milk. On that note, I do hope that oat milk doesn't become so popular that prices for oats rise, as oats are a cheap and nutritious food that are often heavily relied upon by people on very low incomes.

Ninoo25 · 13/01/2019 14:59

As a treat the chocolate oatly is amazing. The barista one is good in tea 😊

Isitwinteryet · 13/01/2019 15:03

We have oat milk in our house. Everyone loves it!!

AnotherPidgey · 13/01/2019 15:11

YABU but only because my local supermarket struggles on stock and we have dairy and soya issues Wink We've been using it for about 7 years since DS's CMPA was identified.

The Oatly chocolate milk is particularly disgusting and if it goes back into stock, I am duty bound to buy it up to hoard and protect you all Wink Grin

PlatypusPie · 13/01/2019 15:12

Late onset dairy intolerance here - got used to soya, dairy now tastes unpleasant, oat milk used to taste very thin and odd. Oatley Barista such a game changer with regards to splitting in hot drinks but still in short supply - their Whole is nearly as good and tastes as good. Gluten and dairy intolerant DD has almond and DH is doing Keto stuff so has full fat cow’s milk. Unsweetened soya works best for cooking, IMO. Our fridge looks like a parody of fussiness but at least everyone is happy.

Vitalogy · 13/01/2019 15:25

Yes, Oatly uses here. Although I'm going through a phase of having full fat cow milk in coffee but use Oatly on cereal still. I see Oatly have started doing whole and semi skimmed, not tried it yet though.

Vitalogy · 13/01/2019 15:30

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 13/01/2019 15:36

knittick I was uneasy due to the impact on the environment and the animal welfare aspect. I know that makes me somewhat hypocritical as I'm not actually vegan, but I do try to eat minimal meat and eggs - the milk was one area where I hadn't been able to reduce, so am chuffed to have discovered oat milk.

Cartons are recyclable, but where I am (Cardiff) we have to save them up and take them to a particular recycling centre, we can't just put them out for collection.

Re fat and calories, Oatley full fat and semi skimmed both work out better than the equivalent in cow milk. Not sure about the Barrista one though.

To me it tasted like watery porridge or, even worse, watery readybrek. I didn't like it!

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 13/01/2019 15:45

YANBU I love it too! Not veggie or vegan and like cows milk for certain things but always have oat milk in my coffee and to make porridge

Vitalogy · 13/01/2019 15:45

JesusInTheCabbageVan Oh yes, I've just re read Wink

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/01/2019 15:46

Eurgh no.

I have gone through all the non-dairy 'milks'

Oat is really watery , even after shaking it thoroughly . I used to put the water and the Oaty in then add the coffee a tiny bit at a time . It was weak and meh

Nut milks taste 'off' to me
Not keen on coconut milk.

I like the Original Alpro, I was a bit worried reading reports about menopausal women and soya, tried Oaty..........went back to soya.
It is sweet , almost caramelly

Vitalogy · 13/01/2019 15:46

Toddlerteaplease · 13/01/2019 16:02

It's quite nice. I tied the Starbucks cereal latte which was nice than it sounds. Wish they'd left off the flakes on the top though.

Perfectly1mperfect · 13/01/2019 16:04

I'm glad I've read this. I'm not vegan either but I don't eat meat and I've been thinking of stopping cows milk as, like you, I am really uncomfortable with the welfare side of it. I will give the oat milk a try.

Bezalelle · 13/01/2019 16:08

Oat milk fan here too!

AFistfulofDolores1 · 13/01/2019 16:15

Oatly Barista is awesome - but unfortunately supply can't keep up with demand at the moment.

A good alternative that I'm using right now is Minor Figures Foamable Oatmilk for Baristas.
