To tell you all that oat milk is actually lovely?

Speaking as a non-veggie. I'd been uneasy about the amount of milk we get through for a while, but skeptical about alternatives. Tried oat milk at someone's house over Xmas, and it's amazing! Basically like creamy, comforting liquid porridge. Goes fine in coffee, makes the most amazing horlicks, and if anything is nicer than cow milk. (Long time poster, don't have shares in oat milk, promise)

I use Oat milk in porridge, it makes it delicious and creamy and gives it a surprisingly sweet flavour. It's also really good as a drink on it's own.

Oddly enough though, I can't stand it in coffee, it seems to sort of separate from the water, if that makes sense, and the flavour seems all wrong.

Another vote for Oatly Barrista (although I haven't tried frothing it yet)

At first I wasn't sure about smooth, runny, cold, porridge, but compared to other non-dairy milks it's my favourite - and I think it's fine in tea and coffee (and it turns it a better colour than almond does - I always think it virtually looks like black tea when I use almond)

have you tried dried milk in your tea? I drink lots of tea - I find the tea tastes much fresher (stopped using ordinary milk years ago). "Marvel" is good, but very expensive - find the much cheaper shop brands perfectly fine.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 13/01/2019 14:05

Higher in calories and fat than milk though Shock

OlderThanAverageforMN · 13/01/2019 14:06

Semi-Skimmed that is....

OlderThanAverageforMN · 13/01/2019 14:07

And twice as expensive.

Sorry I keep returning, rather than putting in all one message.

My DD needs LactoFree and would prefer the Oat Milk, but I haven't let her change, because of this. LactoFree also very expensive though.

Oats and porridge make me heave, so I'll give it a miss thanks.

Oat milk is amazing in porridge or other cooking. We tried a number of the milk alternatives when my wife went vegan, I don't drink milk or hot drinks anyway so was happy to have an alternative for cooking etc. She didn't like the nut milks (almond, hazelnut) as they leave an oily layer on coffee, and hated all soy options, but has settled on rice milk as her preferred choice. It's quite thin and sweet and doesn't make the coffee as pale but that's mainly aesthetic, and she's cut out adding sugar to compensate. We like the oat in cereal as it's thicker, or hazelnut for the flavour, if it's not being heated. Don't be afraid to try the different types, we always have rice in the fridge for general use but I keep a selection of others for when I fancy a change. They are fairly long life and we rotate as we put away so the oldest get used first. Bought vanilla rice milk yesterday, first time I've seen it and excited to give it a go.

Cows Milk after. Couple of days makes me want to puke 🤢

I like soya, oat or almond milks and they don’t “turn rancid”

CarolDanvers · 13/01/2019 14:13

It’s great. My autistic kids can’t even tell the difference when I use it for hot chocolate, pancakes and half oat and half dairy on cereal. I use it for porridge and it’s no different. Oatly is the one I use.

dontgobaconmyheart · 13/01/2019 14:14

Not lovely if you're coeliac or gluten intolerant! But I miss it Envy. Tbh most of the non dairy milks are nicer than real dairy, which I think tastes vile. Just wish they had less sugar in them!

MsJuniper · 13/01/2019 14:15

I love hazelnut milk on cereal, it makes everything taste slightly chocolatey. Soya professional is my favourite in tea. I wish I could buy smaller cartons of the milks as I don't get through much in a week and could then keep in both types.

DGRossetti · 13/01/2019 14:16

Oatly Barrista is the mutts nuts (Bartista as it foams lovely for lattes, etc)

You need to be a bit on the ball with packaging ... there are a few Oatly varieties, and they tend to look the same.

I used to like hemp milk, but Oatlys replaced it as a fave (thanks to it's mention on MN Grin )

sherrysfortea · 13/01/2019 14:18

Never tried it before but will now!

Currently using almond milk as I agree we drink too much cows milk.

soulrider · 13/01/2019 14:19

Our workplace is trying out alternatives at the moment. I find all the plant milks way too sweet in coffee.

KitsandCaboodles · 13/01/2019 14:19

Are unsweetened soya and nut milks better for tea than the sweetened stuff?

KitsandCaboodles · 13/01/2019 14:20

Tea and coffee sorry.

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/01/2019 14:20

I love coconut milk and have it in coffee now.

Dd has coeliac disease and since Starbucks have started offering oat milk she can no longer have drinks from there as they can't clean the pipes out enough and her non oat milk drink could be contaminated. Shame for people with serious illness like her.

Saying that I might try oat milk myself now!

Elephantgrey · 13/01/2019 14:21

It is also the best non dairy milk for children from a nutritional point of view so I am not surprised that it is quite high calorie as a previous poster pointed out.

soulrider · 13/01/2019 14:22

Admittedly haven't tried the oat one as it's not gluten free

Knittink · 13/01/2019 14:22

Why were you uneasy about the amount if milk you were using, OP?
Also, is oat milk at all sweet? I absolutely hate sweet-tasting tea or coffee, so that would be a deal-breaker for me.

thecatneuterer · 13/01/2019 14:22

Otters - I'm now vegan (over a year now) and a tea addict, so I tried all the 'milks' to see which made tea drinkable. Soya was the only one. All the others just taste like black tea with added something as opposed to white tea.

Ginpasta · 13/01/2019 14:25

Where can you buy the oatley barista? Xx
