Phone bugged

(Posting for traffic) I would really appreciate any help or advice anyone can give me as I don’t even know where to start right now.

Have a very bad relationship with PIL. Found out a few years ago they hired a private investigator on me. I found out because I overheard a conversation between PIL when they were drunk but they don’t know I’ve heard them.

Over the years since our relationship deteriorated, I’ve had a few cases where they’ve said things they shouldn’t know. I’ve always put it down to coincidence but recently my fil has word for word quoted two of my telephone conversations with my sister and he should have absolutely have no way of knowing any of it. He also got warning “looks” from mil when he said these things.

I can’t speak to anyone IRL about this in case I am being paranoid or I look crazy. If my phone is bugged then a lot of things that have happened over the last few years make sense. Is there anything I can do to find out if someone has access to
Personal information on my phone? Can anyone give me advice on this?

This is very creepy behaviour. My advice is to get your home checked and report it to the police if you find anything.

Workissueshelp · 14/01/2019 15:21

How awful OP.

I hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

I’d be going no contact.

GahWhatever · 14/01/2019 16:22

Wow.
That double plug is terrifying: those are all over my house and we would be absolutely non-the wiser if someone wanted to record us.
I hope you get to the bottom of it OP.

Fashionista101 · 14/01/2019 17:14

Tbf I think if my PILs heard what we said about them they wouldn't want anything to do with us! Ha!

impossible · 14/01/2019 17:40

Change your wifi password and add a separate one for guests - not sure how its done but have been told it's fairly easy.

Also get a new mobile with new number, perhaps keeping the old one for in laws. Then do a sweep of the house. If you find something you can confront them - or just talk to them directly from the comfort of your own home (I know you're listening PIL...)

It sounds horrible to have such an unhappy relationship with inlaws. Be glad they are seven hours away. Good luck!

Someone bugged my phone once. Assume you’ve googled tell tale signs. I had a nonsense text to start then the call forwarding symbol appeared in top browser of phone, even though my call forwarding was off. Very true re testing out saying something sensational to see if anything is said

beansontoastfortea · 14/01/2019 17:44

You can buy recorders in everything these days but be aware it would have to be plugged in for it to remain charged... so it wouldn’t be in a soft toy or something like that.

It would be in an extension lead possibly... if you google covert spy recorder you’ll be able to see what devices are commonly used to disguise recorders

Goodness OP, how scary. No advice or experience, but hope you get to the bottom of it and do keep us updated please!

Horrordoeurvres · 14/01/2019 17:54

Shameless place marking to see what happens next

TheyBuiltThePyramids · 14/01/2019 17:58

Surely it must be the phone, if the FIL heard what the sister said at the other end of the phone?

hopeishere · 14/01/2019 18:00

It could be the phone or a small listening device.

Very creepy either way.

angelfacecuti75 · 14/01/2019 18:03

Call police & have them investigate it. What they are doing is probably illegal. Its either 101 or 111 (one is nhs & 1 is national non emergency police line). Who cares if il's they crossed a huge line and have had no justice for what they've done.

Realitea · 14/01/2019 18:15

It could be anywhere, even baby monitors are hacked. Sadly my step father used to sit and listen to people’s conversations and the police radio on some sort of radio device he had. He also bugged my mums phone.
I’d definitely tell the police and ask them if they can investigate it. Get a new phone too.

wigglepig · 14/01/2019 18:16

Tell your sister your pregnant with your best friends baby and make up a clinic your going to and catch them there. I can guarantee they would turn up for that.

strivingforjustice · 14/01/2019 18:22

OMG I've never heard anything like this ...do they suspect you of child abuse or murder or something ? it's like the film about the Fokker's ! Hiring a PI ?

Have a bombshell conversation away from your home & car , if no response , wait and repeat convo at home, think where you were when you spoke to your sister and begin search there. Hme pc easy to install bugs, if a PI has done it they like to situate them higher up in a room for better amplification... Have you checked your cars for bugs and trackers? Local garage can check for trackers... turn location services off your phone if iphone ... have ipads checked ... all sounds very weird, very illegal and incredibly disturbing... Think you should fully share concerns with your husband and he should be mortified... then get their toxicity out of your life and your childrens ... they sound like paranoid freaks!

ToftyAC · 14/01/2019 18:27

I would hire my own PI and get them to do a full big sweep of the house & phones. Someone who is v tech savvy and can give you some solid advice.

babyno5 · 14/01/2019 18:29

Just googled and found this!! Wtf it actually turns your iphone into a listening device!!

MyNameIsJane · 14/01/2019 18:30

This is awful!

Elderflower84 · 14/01/2019 18:35

The way they said "the PI for xxxx" makes it sound like they've got PIs onto other people too... otherwise surely they'd just say "the PI" ....?
