I come from a tiny family. The last baby in our family was me, 31 years ago.

Today is SILs due date. My wonderful DM died shortly after their wedding in 2016 and this feels like the first good thing to happen to our family since.

Help me out MN! I'm child free and I'm not sure I've ever ever held a baby on my life but I'm STUPIDLY excited about becoming and Auntie!!

Have text SIL and DBro and said I totally understand they may want days or weeks alone with DNorN before inviting visitors but that I've kept the diary clear for potential visits in January.

AM. so. EXCITED.

What shall I bring baby? And more importantly SIL?? Any idea for a nice present for a new Mum??

Arrrrrggghhhh! Grin

My aunt also knitted a car blanket with a hole for the strap to go through which was brilliant . Didn't understand it til we carried DS across the carpark for the first time and the north sea wind took the beautiful (white) blanket granny lovingly made and deposited in in an icey puddle! Also second the travel mug

My go to baby item is a morrck wrap ... they stay inside the car seat / pushchair and you wrap the baby in them - no need for coats or blankets that could fall off.

I really appreciated my friends coming over with food when I first had dd - and someone brought me a "mummy" travel mug so my tea didn't get cold because I always forgot to drink it ... that made me cry as to how thoughtful they was ha x

How exciting. My sister was so happy when I had my baby. Having someone adore my baby and shower her with love has been such a beautiful, nourishing experience.
Two people gave me presents when I had a baby, that were intended for me. I was so grateful for the treat.

These are lovely and in the sale:

I don’t have any advice to add to what’s already been said but just wanted to say that I think you are going to be a mega aunt and your dneice/dnephew will be so lucky to have you.

Thisnamechanger · 12/01/2019 23:01

Haha you’re welcome.
I first joined MN when you exceptional people nursed me through every moment of my DMs passing so I couldn’t think of better people to share the excitement with. “D” bunny had also just eaten through my rucksack strap. I’ve put them on a diet after realising they are both almost spherical so they’re eating everything 🙄

SIL and DBro are such lovely people....if it turns out half as good as them it’ll be a lucky babe!

Fabulous post, congratulations auntie to be Smile

I got some animal hooded towels when my daughter was born, she is now 2 and I was only thinking today how useful they have been constantly and lovely.

A friend of mine got a week's worth of fancy ready meals delivered to our house - so thoughtful and very much appreciated.

Highlandcathedral · 12/01/2019 23:15

@thisnamechanger this is such a lovely thread. Almost 30 years ago I was you, so excited for the arrival of my first nephew. He is now a strapping 30 year old, and yesterday he messaged me to let me know his own little one will be born in June this year. I was so excited again I had a little cry about becoming a Great Aunt.

So I’ll take some of these suggestions for the next generation.

ILoveChristmasLights · 12/01/2019 23:17

Awww bless. I hope DN arrives soon, fit as a fiddle!

UniversalAunt · 12/01/2019 23:19

Yeay!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Auntiedom.
You are off to a flying start, a natural - full of love, thoughtful and fun.

I am much by impressed by the many posters suggestions, some of which I have stumbled upon. Your thoughtfulness and generosity will be greatly appreciated and baby will love the extra cuddles too.

SouthernComforts · 12/01/2019 23:20

This thread is so refreshingly nice Smile

Good luck to your SIL, hope you're having cuddles with the baby very soon.

Lonelyheart2020 · 12/01/2019 23:20

when my daughter was born ( she was in nicu for 4 months ) so when she came home she was on oxygen and tube feeds.
So was getting very little sleep the best present I got was my sister coming around turning the telly on picked bubba up and basically told me to fuck of and shower you reek then sleep because you look horrendous 😂( lucky I get her humour ) but anyway I had a hot bath and snuggled in bed and had the longest nap I had for 5 months.

letallthechildrenboogie · 12/01/2019 23:22

The nicest thing I got when we had our twins was a hamper of really lovely treats, sweet things, nice teas etc. I was feeding them and constantly ravenous so it was much appreciated. Good luck. You sound like you'll be great.

Thisnamechanger · 12/01/2019 23:23

I’d forgotten just how bloody lovely MN can be. Thank you so much everyone. Will take a photo of my care parcel tomorrow and will of course update if there’s any baby news!

What a lovely thread Smile If you wanted to treat both DB & SIL together maybe you could get a voucher for a nice restaurant local to them (though with decent length of time to redeem it so SIL is fully recovered and able to enjoy it) along with a free babysitting voucher from you? Smile Hope all goes smoothly and DBunnies stop eating random stuff! Grin

Icypop · 12/01/2019 23:27

Care package for mum is a lovely idea...if shes planning on breastfeeding get button up front pjs. Boux avenue and m&s both have nice ones! Also food!! Snacky things to grab quickly (biscuits) but also somthing to stick in the oven that night!
Dont get the baby a snowsuit...they are very cute so people seem to like buying them i got 4!! Babygrow sets in ages 3-6 or 6-9 will be much more use! Next & m&s do nice packs of 3.
Also, its so lovely that you are so excited! It really comes across in your posts!

EgremontRusset · 12/01/2019 23:31

As your budget is generous, may I suggest either good red wine or actual champagne, rather than prosecco, depending on your SIL’s tastes? After months without booze I really liked that from friends, it made me feel really happy and ‘seen’ - and as my tolerance had plummeted, the nicer the better! Stinky cheese, too, as that’s often off the menu during pregnancy. And for me, a short poetry anthology was lovely - it was like a present for the ‘old me’ rather than just for me as a mum. And poems (or short stories) are short enough to read even if you’re knackered.

PutYourBackIntoit · 12/01/2019 23:33

I'm an Auntie as of yesterday, am I'm thrilled to bits too!!!! Grin

Lovely thread and lovely ideas for gifts.

I'm getting first cuddles tomorrow Smile

Treaclepie19 · 12/01/2019 23:33

This is so lovely ❤

Smurf123 · 12/01/2019 23:34

My aunt bought my ds a reversible bubble car seat blanket... I use it in the pram though not the car seat but it has been an absolute lifesaver us! Especially when ds was smaller he would only sleep in the pram with that blanket! He loves snuggling into the soft little bubbles to go to sleep and it closes around him with velcro almost like a swaddle.. He still loves his arms tucked in to go to sleep now and he's 10 months 😂 we have literally used it daily for naps or to soothe him.. It gets washed and dried overnight!
And it was a gift we only got one off, we got several sleeping bags, clothes etc.

Thisnamechanger · 12/01/2019 23:35
