I'll start.

Céline Dion - Fly

Bloody hell, what a song. I only just discovered it today. The feel of the song and the lyrics are out of this world. Truly amazing. And extremely comforting if you've been through a child loss. Listen if you have the time Thanks

On a lighter note, Let's here it for the boy - Deniece Williams Grin

Another artist more people should know, though not technically underrated since I'm sure everyone who knows him thinks he's fantastic, is Thomas Dybdahl. Rise In Shame, One Day You'll Dance For Me New York City, and Green Eyes are my favourites.

Unbelievable18 · 15/01/2019 20:45

I've tried to add some of the latest but it hasn't worked for me. If anyone can add them I'd be grateful as I'm loving this playlist!

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 15/01/2019 20:53

Be Calm - fun.
Carry On - fun.
(Basically I could say both fun. albums as I love them)

Take Me To Church - Hozier

Swim - Jack's Mannequin
Caves - Jack's Mannequin (another band where I could just recommend their whole albums)

Same Love - Macklemore
Neon Cathedral - Macklemore
Otherside - Macklemore

Going Home - Mary Fahl

Friend, Please - twenty one pilots
Isle of Flightless Birds - twenty one pilots
Ode to Sleep - twenty one pilots
(Everything by twenty one pilots - they are my current music obsession!)

Grey Day by Madness. You never hear it these days.

rightreckoner · 15/01/2019 21:10

Elkie Brooks is a good call. Love her Lilac Wine.

CoughLaughFart · 15/01/2019 21:16

‘Loving You, Losing You’ by Phyllis Hyman (wouldn’t you change your name?) One of the best intros ever.

borntobequiet · 15/01/2019 21:37

Not underrated, but worth a listen

Culture club - victims
It's a sad song but beautiful vocals and takes me back to being 13 and heartbroken being dumped before Christmas. I wallowed playing this song over and over til my Dad hid my record as the whole house was sick to death of the misery Grin

Pinklady301 · 15/01/2019 23:12

Ha I have so many but here's a few for starters :

Twisted - Keith Sweat
Red light spells danger (I think it's called?) - Billy Ocean
Will you be there - Michael Jackson
Hedonism - Skunk Anansie
Day we caught the train - ocean colour scene
Don't go away - oasis
Nobody knows - tony rich project
Mmmbop - Hanson ( love it, glad it got mentions!)
Stuck on you - heuy Lewis
We are the world - USA for Africa
Don't cry - guns n roses
Eventually - pink
You'll see - Madonna

Mine are nearly all quite depressing Blush

CoughLaughFart · 15/01/2019 23:58

‘Time and Time Again’ by Dusty Springfield. Recorded during her fallow period post-drug addiction and only released in the US, a few years before her comeback with the Pet Shop Boys.

IamFrauBlucher · 16/01/2019 07:01

@mrsglowglow - ah bless you, I was the same with that song, but not unrequited love, more a horrible home life.

And two years ago I went to a tiny venue to watch CultureClub, and when they played this I blubbed like a baby Blush

I will try to go through and add songs later this evening. But if others can feel free! I think there must be like a weeks listening time now Grin

GabsAlot · 16/01/2019 10:40

GabsAlot · 16/01/2019 10:42

forgot to put hurt by christina aguilera not tha same as nine inch nails version

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 16/01/2019 10:43

Frenchy that Cranberries song is beautiful. I was thinking of them yesterday as I think I heard it's a year since Dolores passed away. Very sad, her voice was so unique and haunting, proper goose bumps stuffSad

Linger although very well known also has such gorgeous lyrics.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 16/01/2019 11:05

Another poster reminded me of Janet Jackson back catalogue so I've just had the album Janet on Alexa. Wow, I'd forgotten it was s very very sexy album in places!

rightreckoner · 16/01/2019 13:23

Nice call on Billy Ocean. I'd also add Love Really Hurts Without You.

It's got a Temptations feel. I think he's generally underrated.

Also the whole of Chas and Dave with the possible exception of Snooker Loopy!

Some beautiful love songs:
Ain't no pleasing you
And much less well known but lovely:
I wish that I could write a love song

Plus some amazing wordsmithing and delivery:
Sideboard song
Gertcha

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 16/01/2019 15:23

You are my destiny, Lionel Richie.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 16/01/2019 15:24

My choices are so commercial and un-cool Grin

FiggyFudgePot · 16/01/2019 16:16

Stupid Girls - Pink (That video, Lol)
She's Got It Bad - Simply Red (Woooo that drummin')
Prisoner - Mariah Carey

Fuck You - Lily Allen

mrsglowglow · 16/01/2019 19:02

@IamFrauBlucher Flowers music has such power to stir our memories - the good and the bad ones.

AstonMartini · 16/01/2019 21:00

Sam Brown - I'll Be In Love

Abba - The Winner Takes It All (though maybe this isn't underrated, on second thoughts).

Paul Young - Soldier's Things / The Man In the Iron Mask (better than B Bragg, IMO)

The Blue Nile - The Downtown Lights

Carly Simon - When Your Lover Has Gone

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 16/01/2019 21:16

Alan Parson's Project - Old and wise
Lady Gaga - You and I
Kiss - Crazy crazy nights
Carly Simon - Let the river run

SimplySteve · 16/01/2019 23:08

Don't go away - oasis

Absolutely this.

Manic Street Preachers - Motorcycle Emptiness
Manic Street Preachers - Little Baby Nothing
Dido - Thank You
Lene Marlin - Everything she did but especially:

  • Faces
  • Flown Away
  • Maybe I'll Go
  • A Place Nearby
Shawn Mullins - Lullaby Elton John - The One Evanescence - My Immortal Darren Hayes - I Miss You Darren Hayes - Casey Darren Hayes - Black Out The Sun (Extended Version) Amaranthe - Amaranthine Phil Collins - Colours Heart - These Dreams 2pac - Changes Emeli Sandé - Read All About It, Pt III Richard Durand & Christina Novelli - The Air I Breathe Pink - Who Knew Enigma - Return to Innocence George Michael - Jesus To A Child Queen and George Michael - Somebody To Love (the only person who could have joined Queen following Freddie Mercury's passing. He would've done a sterling job, not that he would've replaced Mercury; Mercury was, and is, totally irreplaceable) Savage Garden - So many of their songs but Crash and Burn stands out. Emma Hewitt - Colours fucking hell, pulls at the heartstrings Emma Hewitt - Miss You Paradise Brad Paisley - Then Queen - These Are The Days Of Our Lives 😭

For those songs that cause goosebumps, elate you, upset you, make your emotions soar one minute and drag you to despair the next and fire your emotions across all levels. Those special, emotive songs that touch your soul. Music is so unexplainable in its power. It's just so powerful, and the only way I know how to express my emotions. As a self harmer music is the thing, the only thing, that can control the action.

Note: I could have listed a large amount of trance (subset of dance but focused on emotion) music, especially vocal trance/uplifting trance, but I'm assuming not many people on MN are familiar with the genre so eventually decided not to.
