Vogue Williams pumping and dumping

I thought this was an outdated practise yet Vogue insisted on her new reality tv show that she had to pump and dump her milk as she'd been out having a few drinks.

AIBU to think that it's irresponsible for Channel 4 to show this sort of nonsense?

honorariam, its not about intelligence, it can be new mum nerves etc.

You seem to want to put down all other Mums.

Your watching a reality TV Show.

In reality we all make our own decisions based on what we find out and what suits us.

She does need to pump amd dump, so thays what she did.

You might not feel that you have to, so don't.

Both of you are correct.

Birdsgottafly · 12/01/2019 20:53

robininbrum, Made in Chelsea, Reality TV stars.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence to pump and dump. If you are passing out, too drunk to feed your baby, don’t feed them. You don’t need to pump to get rid of the alcohol. Beyond that, enjoy as many drinks as you want and feed your baby. You don’t have to pump and dump anymore than you need to give yourself a blood transfusion every time you have a glass of wine. The alcohol leaves your breast milk at the same rate it leaves your blood.

I quite like a glass (or 3) of wine. I have never once pumped and dumped. There is no need.

HappyLazzer · 12/01/2019 20:54

Honorarium, I see you are annoyed with Channel 4 but by putting VW's name in the title rather than the focus on channel 4 it comes across as a new mother bashing thread hence why everyone is focusing on Vogue and her breastfeeding practises rather than what's being broadcast.

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 12/01/2019 20:55

You drama queen. Get over it. I k ow quite a few mums who pump and dump. They want to go out and have a drink every now and then so why not.

Stop getting uptight over a non issue.

robininbrum · 12/01/2019 20:59

Thanks @birdsgottafly I never watch made in chelsea, so don't know who she is.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 21:00

@Thesnobbymiddleclassone why don't you tell them they can without having to faff about pumping after? I bet they'd thank you for it.

I had to do this at Christmas simply because my breasts became engorged and it was agony...

2019Dancerz · 12/01/2019 21:03

Thenobby I don’t think you understand the OP’s point. If a woman chooses to have a few drinks while breastfeeding there is no need to dump anything your milk will be fine.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 21:03

@Birdsgottafly but that's just not true, is it? If I said that after a long deliberation, I'd decided that smoking cigarettes doesn't cause health issues so I was going to puff away on 20 a day, I'd be wrong wouldn't I?

I'd expect people to tell me I was wrong and the people doing so would be correct; I wouldn't.

I didn’t realise you shouldn’t pump and dump but I certainly did it myself. Any alcohol is a poison.
Lots of people drink during pregnancy and you don’t know if there is going to be an effect until the kid is much older.
Alcohol affects brain development.
I think she is right not to take any risk. Even if it is small.

Mintychoc1 · 12/01/2019 21:12

I’m baffled by this thread. I didn’t drink when I was breastfeeding, and I’m pretty sure the general advice is to leave it a few hours if you’ve had a few drinks.

OP you clearly haven’t been taking this precaution, and now you’re feeling bad about it, so you’re making it a crusade under the guise of it being “discouraging to young mothers”.
If you have read the evidence and you feel happy to drink and breastfeed then that’s your choice, but don’t expect other people to take that same risk just to stop you feeling uncomfortable

Hidillyho · 12/01/2019 21:12

She didn’t spout it as ‘you must do this if you don’t you are a shit mum’ way though. If that’s what she wants to do then let her do it

jessstan2 · 12/01/2019 21:14

I don't know who Vogue Williams is.

Never heard of pumping and dumping either, it sounds revolting but now I've looked it up, I see no point in it. Surely if you've had a bit to drink and breast feed, the baby will sleep well.

Horrible expression though, 'pump and dump'.

Now I'll google Vogue Williams.

jessstan2 · 12/01/2019 21:15

Oh yeah! I recognise her now. Irish model and television presenter. Very good looking girl, seems far too nice to be using such vulgar expressions.

JustSoHard · 12/01/2019 21:17

Maybe Vogue decided to follow NHS guidelines which sounds pretty responsible to me.

derxa · 12/01/2019 21:17

On another note I love Vogue and Spencer. I saw them on Sunday Brunch and they're such a laugh. They're so beautiful and shiny and happy. They're part of the Matthews Middleton clan. Some people win the lottery in life.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 21:18

@Mintychoc1 good try! However, I didn't drink at all until DS was 10 months old and then, it was only a glass of white wine once in a blue moon as I was back at work.

Didn't even have my first proper 'night out' until he was 13 months and as it happened, didn't breastfeed until the next day because he was asleep when I got in.

I hope that's a joke Hmm

Ooplesandbanoonoos · 12/01/2019 21:21

I have read and heard differing advice about alcohol and breastfeeding and would probably do the same if I drank more than one small glass of wine.

YuriGeller · 12/01/2019 21:22

Oh man for some reason I was thinking of the "red pill" meaning of the phrase not the breast feeding meaning 😖

Mintychoc1 · 12/01/2019 21:22

Well then that makes it seem even more bizarre.
Pumping and dumping is sensible. It prevents the baby getting alcohol from breast milk. What is wrong with someone doing it? Madness.

dementedpixie · 12/01/2019 21:24

But it doesn't. The alcohol leaves breast milk at the same rate it leaves the blood. You can't just drain off the milk with alcohol content

honorariam · 12/01/2019 21:26

@Mintychoc1 what @dementedpixie said.
