Vogue Williams pumping and dumping

honorariam · 12/01/2019 19:07

I thought this was an outdated practise yet Vogue insisted on her new reality tv show that she had to pump and dump her milk as she'd been out having a few drinks.

AIBU to think that it's irresponsible for Channel 4 to show this sort of nonsense?

I just think it’s a bit stupid to think you can predict how long it takes for alcohol to reach your breast milk.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:28

@Lelly0503 why is it responsible?
We saw the very end of the night, where she was coherent and able to walk around so I'd suggest it was unnecessary to throw the milk away for that reason.

It’s harmful because making women think that having a couple of drinks is a problem discourages long-term breastfeeding. There is no reason to pump and dump. Alcohol concentrations in milk are the same as in your blood. You would have to consume a ridiculous amount of alcohol to impact the baby and if you just wait a bit, your milk is alcohol free. Basically, if it’s safe to hold your baby, it’s safe to nurse.

DonutCone · 12/01/2019 20:30

Oh come on. If you haven’t the sense to check out something like that before having a drink and breastfeeeing you are probably not suitable to be doing either.

She decided what she felt was best. Everyone else should do the same. She is not the NHS breastfeeding advisor. Get a grip, and give her a break.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:33

@MrsJayy why would it risk her baby? Bitter about what exactly?

OP posts:
Hogtini · 12/01/2019 20:34

No wonder new mums feel like they can't do anything right...

Birdsgottafly · 12/01/2019 20:35

But some Doctors do still say that you should wait three hours before feeding.

My DD is BF and on nights out has to go and 'milk' herself, or she's in pain.

It depends on how much your drinking, I suppose, but it's best to not be even be the one picking the baby up etc, if you are drunk. Male or Female.

FrancisCrawford, if you enjoy a drink, can express enough and have someone that you trust to have the baby/toddler, then you don't have to restrain yourself

It's not about needing alcohol, it's about enjoying and missing it.

OP, why not air on the side of caution? What's the issue? No-one is going to be put off having a glass of wine over this.

MrsJayy · 12/01/2019 20:35

Maybe vogue thought it might risk her baby, and bitter about feeling judged and judging vogue williams for nothing a mum doing her best.

Parthenope · 12/01/2019 20:36

Yes, because women are so dim-witted they know only a single source of information about that arcane practice that is breast-feeding, and that’s from a model on a reality tv show.

Also, given the low UK bf rates, why not focus on the positive, that a minor celebrity has demonstrated on tv that it can be combined with a normal social life?

Bigonesmallone3 · 12/01/2019 20:37

@Parthenope
That's exactly how it should be looked at!

HappyLazzer · 12/01/2019 20:37

Honorarium, why should they? It's not a programme about breastfeeding information. It's a programme about new parents coping with a new baby and showing the reality for Vogue.

And whilst you're moaning that it sets a bad example and potentially guilt tripping breastfeeding mothers about drinking whilst breastfeeding, did it ever occur to you that it's also showing all new mothers that actually it's fine to socialise and drink even with a new baby. I've breastfed both my children and couldn't care less what Vogue does with her milk. It's actually refreshing to see a new mum going out and enjoying herself without feeling guilt or pressure about leaving her baby. Why don't you dedicate your time to raising awareness for breastfeeding, busting those myths surrounding it and physically supporting breastfeeding mothers rather than finding ways to bash a new mother?

Birdsgottafly · 12/01/2019 20:39

"It’s harmful because making women think that having a couple of drinks is a problem discourages long-term breastfeeding"

It's this level of criticism and scrutiny that puts younger Women off BF.

There may not be a lot of alcohol in her BM but if she doesn't want any, then she's quite right to make her decisions based on that.

Likewise when you wean, how you feed your children, if you let them drink underage.

Her child, her breasts, her body, her choice.

Why is that difficult to grasp?

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:41

@Birdsgottafly because no one is saying she shouldn't do what she wants...I'm saying that it shouldn't be shown on a TV show where other people might think it's correct!

Once you have all the facts, you can be whatever you want but let's not muddy the waters by showing as fact, something which isn't true.

OP posts:
honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:42

@HappyLazzer I actually agree with everything you've said and if you re-read my OP, you'll see that I said it was irresponsible of Channel 4, not Vogue, who clearly doesn't know any different.

OP posts:
Bigonesmallone3 · 12/01/2019 20:44

It's not untrue tho!
If you're engorged and you are not comfortable giving that milk to your baby or are not with your baby or u can't get it stored correctly then get rid!

MaHeidsGouping · 12/01/2019 20:45

Some folk can't win, she is doing her best....we all do what we think is right, you only have to look at all the different replies if someone posts on here the best way to makeup/store formula. She probably has a load of different opinions on what to do with her milk and thought pumping and dumping was best.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:46

@Parthenope there is a thread on here at the moment with a woman asked if her baby could be brain damaged because his blanket went on his face while he was sleeping... I'd suggest that all women aren't as intelligent as you clearly think they are.

This thread is stupid.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:49

@Shitmewithyourrhythmstick why?

OP posts:
Bigonesmallone3 · 12/01/2019 20:50

Sorry OP you sound like a knob after that comment

Hidillyho · 12/01/2019 20:51

She didn’t spout it as ‘you must do this if you don’t you are a shit mum’ way though. If that’s what she wants to do then let her do it

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:51

@Bigonesmallone3 again, I am not saying that you shouldn't pump and dump if you're uncomfortable etc. I'm purely saying that it isn't necessary ONLY because you've been drinking. I have said that a few times though...

Who the hell is Vogue Williams? Confused
