Vogue Williams pumping and dumping

honorariam · 12/01/2019 19:07

I thought this was an outdated practise yet Vogue insisted on her new reality tv show that she had to pump and dump her milk as she'd been out having a few drinks.

AIBU to think that it's irresponsible for Channel 4 to show this sort of nonsense?

I don't see a problem, surely it's upto the mother whether she is comfortable giving her baby milk she has produced with alcohol in her system..
She pumped because she was uncomfortable

Corcra · 12/01/2019 19:55

She is just trying to do what is right for her and her baby

honorariam · 12/01/2019 19:55

The totally incorrect information I'm referring to, for anyone struggling, is that you need to pump and dump after drinking!

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 12/01/2019 19:58

She is an irish model/tvpresenter/reality star married to Spencer Mathews from made in chelsea and she used to be married to Bryan Mcfadden

abcriskringle · 12/01/2019 19:58

No I understand OP. It's not necessary to pump and dump as OP says. And someone who doesn't do this might be made to feel guilty/upset if they see such a thing on telly. Of course, if people want to pump and dump that's fine, but to suggest it's a necessary thing after enjoying a drink or two is misinformation, I agree.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 19:58

@Bigonesmallone3 yes...and what you do in your own life is FINE but this was being broadcast to thousands on people on a tv show!

OP posts:
DonutCone · 12/01/2019 19:58

Wow. Poor woman. She did what she felt was responsible and you’re slating her?!

If she hasn’t, people would have criticised too so she really could never win. She is breastfeeding, she is doing what she feels is the best thing to do with the milk and she is still managing to have a bit of a life of her own. Why don’t we ever try and build other woman up rather than. Instantly knock them down?

Spam88 · 12/01/2019 19:59

I think it's s bit much getting angry Channel 4 for showing such 'irresponsible' information when it's the exact advice my health visitor gave me 🤷‍♀️

MrsJayy · 12/01/2019 20:00

It is up to midwives health visitors or breastfeeding mentors to tell women that information not a reality personality it isn't her responsibility to inform.

icannotremember · 12/01/2019 20:01

Who makes decisions based on a celebrity talking about what they do, without doing a bit of research first? Everyone has Google. What sort of wally would think "Oh if she does it I must too" and copy her rather than taking a minute to just look for info?

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:01

@DonutCone because misinformation like this could stop other breastfeeding women from having a life of their own by preventing them from having a drink (if they want one) because they don't want to/ don't own a pump or don't feel confident that they'd manage to 'pump away the alcoholic milk' or some other shit.

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 12/01/2019 20:05

Oh stop it most mothers watch pish like that for entertainment you are being ridiculous.

chickhonhoneybabe · 12/01/2019 20:05

She likely had enough milk stored to allow her to pump and dump

Breasts don’t store milk...

HappyLazzer · 12/01/2019 20:07

Omg. It's her milk. She can do what she wants with her own body/milk. If she doesn't want to feed her baby that milk then that's fine. If she wants to "pump and dump" for whatever reason then that's fine too. Not everyone has to be a role model. Maybe breastfeeding mothers should do their own research rather than relying on reality tv to inform them on such matters like breastfeeding. Everyone is so offended by everything- it's exhausting.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:09

@icannotremember this question could probably start a whole other thread but you'd be surprised how many people do thinks because celebrities do them.

You only need to look at sponsorship deals: why would Nike ask an athlete to wear their trainers and put it on social media if it didn't mean that someone who admires said athlete would go out and buy them? Same with lifestyle choices.

OP posts:
honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:11

@HappyLazzer so maybe, if she doesn't want to be a 'role-model,' they should have left that part out of the programme...

OP posts:
Grilledaubergines · 12/01/2019 20:19

So her choices aren’t the same as yours, OP? Do they need to be? Entirely up to her. Did people judge your parenting decisions?

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:22

@Grilledaubergines course they did! I co-sleep, which has earned me no end of judgement!

I also work full time and get judged aplenty for that. Please don't tell me you don't think anyone has ever judged your parenting decisions?

OP posts:
honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:23

Never judged*

OP posts:
Fantababy · 12/01/2019 20:24

The midwife at my breastfeeding support classes told us that even with a small glass of wine you had to pump and dump. I went with the La Leche League advice instead. Wink

However, maybe Vogue just did it for comfort. I was out for a meal once when baby was small, was drinking very little, but was so engorged I was in agony. Pumping was the only option then - I certainly didn't have bottles and thermoses etc out with me.

Lelly0503 · 12/01/2019 20:24

I wouldn’t say it’s irresponsible of C4 to show someone undertaking a responsible activity. I think most first time mothers would do a bit of research into drinking and bf’ing & then come to their own decision on what to do. Also, you saw about a 45 second clip of a night out that presumably went on for several hours. You didn’t see every single drink she had or its alchohol content. So maybe she felt more comfortable throwing that milk away. I think even if something is classed as ‘safe’, when it comes to your baby if your not comfortable with it, you don’t do it.

honorariam · 12/01/2019 20:25

No, of course @Fantababy and that's really not what I said in my OP. I said I thought it was irresponsible that the reason she pumped (that she didn't want baby to have alcoholic milk) was shared on the TV show.

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 12/01/2019 20:25

Well if you feel so judged -maybe give Vogue a break perhaps she just didn't want her milk risking her baby you are just coming across as bitter.

Grilledaubergines · 12/01/2019 20:26

@Grilledaubergines course they

Please don't tell me you don't think anyone has ever judged your parenting decisions?

I’m not about to.

daisychain01 · 12/01/2019 20:26

Ye gods. It's times like this I wish for the pre social media days when made up shite like "pump and dump" (what a way with words) didn't exist.
