To think takeaway pizza at a 4 year old’s party is an odd choice?

Just that really. I’m not especially neurotic about what my kids eat. I’m happy for them to have the odd happy meal every couple of months or the occasional chocolate biscuit. But a pile of dominoes pizza at a party in a hall just seems a little much.?

I’m fully prepared to accept it if I’m being unreasonable because I can’t quite put my finger on why I wasn’t keen on this. Maybe it’s the salt. Anyway daughter is now asking for the same thing at her party next week and I’m really not sure.

In my world, at a 4 year olds party they would at, then get called to the table to eat. The veg sticks would be out. They would be given a drink. Then the junk would come out. Quite prepared to accept I am a controlling nightmare. I would give 4 year olds free regien at home or at a party

Queenisabella · 12/01/2019 19:02

Sorry wouldn't

mumofblueeyes · 12/01/2019 19:03

Crumbs. Pizza is a regular in our house. Let alone for a party. Threads like this make me feel like such a bad mum!!

Aeroflotgirl · 12/01/2019 19:03

My point exactly wildone03 the parents probably did not want the stress of preparing food, as you found out, pizza is very popular with children and adults. Wonder if they had garlic bread too, yummy.

Bluntness100 · 12/01/2019 19:04

You have a party for four year olds, make them all sit down then feed them veg sticks and when you deem they've eaten a sufficient quantity of said veg you roll out junk food? Hmm

Wonderbag · 12/01/2019 19:04

DD went to a party when Dominoes turned up. It was a Sunday when there’s some sort of deal the mum took advantage of.
I thought it was a brilliant idea

Aeroflotgirl · 12/01/2019 19:06

Queenisabella sounds like one of those eyeroll (as there is no eyeroll emoji)mums.

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 12/01/2019 19:06

No no not garlic bread! Two lots of carbs, heaven forbid! Will no one think of the children??

Aeroflotgirl · 12/01/2019 19:07

Oh god MsChook the Falafel and Quinoa brigade will have a heart attack Grin.

easyandy101 · 12/01/2019 19:08

Just on my way to a pizza party right now 😍

BF888 · 12/01/2019 19:08

I honestly think it’s down to personal preference. Some people are happy to eat dominos, I’ve had dominoes once and was ill for three days as it was just too unhealthy for me to eat.

I would say to do what you feel best. If in doubt do what you’re doing and maybe buy a pizza from supermarket or you could maybe try another chain and just get 1-2 pizza depending on how many children.

My niece is 8 and if she went to a party and there was dominos pizza she wouldn’t eat it, she doesn’t have the healthiest of diets but she just finds it too greasy.

Mummyshark2019 · 12/01/2019 19:14

It's fine OP.

Queenisabella · 12/01/2019 19:14

Yup I would sit a bunch of 4 year olds down with veg sticks and drinks before bringing out the other food (shoot me)

adaline · 12/01/2019 19:15

I've just had dinner (healthy, three portions of veg for anyone concerned Wink) but I could murder a Dominos right about now!

user1483644229 · 12/01/2019 19:17

To add to this - 4 years olds in reception are getting pizza at school every Friday for their school dinner anyway!

When I offered both vege sticks and dominos pizza at a party I was surprised to find that the vege sticks were very very popular. I had said to my husband that there was no way they would be eaten but they went so fast.

countrygirl99 · 12/01/2019 19:18

I'd never serve Dominoes but I'm lucky enough to live in an area with a massive Italian population and small local places where we can get a decent pizza. I'd serve that happily and often have.

mummyhaschangedhername · 12/01/2019 19:18

I've done that before. As a family we only have dominions once a month of less, kids LOVE it ... isn't that the idea, that it's something that's a big treat? I did cut up veg with dips, pizza and birthday cake ... was so easy, the "party" had involved being somewhere else first (reptile centre) and I ordered the pizza as it was next door and just brought it back. It was easy, tasty and kids were so pleased. No it's not heathy but I don't cater parties for healthy foods for parties as it's the treat. My daughters parties have been a total sugar rush, rainbow fudge, salt rock, cakes, scones, cupcakes, birthday cake, chocolate cake, basically anything brightly coloured with litres of pink lemonade and savoury options too obviously.

My catered parties at okay centres usually are Burger/chicken nuggets and chips so actually I like the idea at mine they at least eat veg. But like I say it's a party, my kids have ridiculous healthy diets compared to their friends I like changing that up for birthdays.

user1483644229 · 12/01/2019 19:18

I offered the vege sticks and pizza at the same time btw

Bluntness100 · 12/01/2019 19:20

The thing is Queen, for one snack meal it makes no difference, and a party that lasts two or three hours, kids can go without veg. The parents can give them veg with their other meals that day . A party is supposed to be fun, not some lesson on enforced healthy eatIng.

Honestly if it was my kid at your party I'd think you were a bit uptight and a performance parenter.

pepperjack · 12/01/2019 19:21

Yes they could make healthier pizza, but I'm sure they've simply ordered it for convenience. To make life easier, not to provide a healthy balanced snack for a party! Since when do kids eat healthy at a party?
I bet they'll only eat one piece, it's not going to kill them and the majority will enjoy it more than sandwiches.

You're no fun

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 12/01/2019 19:21

As other posters have pointed out the options can be limited in some venues.

A hired hall might have a limited kitchen & the parents would the hassle of taking all the food & drink with them. (or buy expensive ready made stuff that's full of salt & fat).

Or the venue might supply food - ime this is usually an expensive option and the choices are burger/hot dog/nuggets & chips. None of which would pass muster with the health police.

No one is suggesting that dominoes is a healthy option - and I don't particularly like it - but it is often a practical and popular choice. It is no worse than other favourite party foods.

JudasPrudy · 12/01/2019 19:22

Any parents expecting cut up vegetables at my kids parties are going to be disappointed Blush

Queenisabella · 12/01/2019 19:26

In countries that routinely eat a raw vegetable starter obesity levels are much lower. It a very healthy habit. It's what I did and do with my dcs at home so why would I do it differently at a party ? I would hate having just pizza, no salad for dinner so why would I serve that to dc ?. As I said I am fully prepared to accept the controlling nightmare title

Queenisabella · 12/01/2019 19:28

I am sure you would bluntness. I'll take that, better than a bit permissive and lax IMO

Aeroflotgirl · 12/01/2019 19:30

Queenisabella you are, parties are meant to be fun, with food kids will like, not some beacon of healthy eating. It is one part of the day fgs, not a regular occurance, that is not going to harm the child. Obesity is not about the food that is in one off parties, but in a child's regular diet.
