So sorry - I know it’s not AIBU but you guys are so helpful - what on Earth is this?

Well it looks like a brush, but I'm guessing the word has to fit in the boxes so is only 4 letters long? In which case - I have no idea!

What age is it for? If it's phonics could it be P/AI/N/T?

A teacher’s mistake?!

It's a paint brush with paint on it but I can't think of any four letter words that'd work except possibly drip. What are the other words? Is there a common theme?

Either paint or brush. I think you are supposed to put one SOUND, rather than one LETTER in each box. So. b-r-u-sh or p-ai-n-t.

How old is the child? Which year group?

For phonics it could be b/r/u/sh

Is it meant to be that each box is per sound? So brush is four sounds b/r/u/sh - one sound per box?

It’s not a mistake. It’s a phoneme frame so sounds not letters- b.r.u.sh. This should have been explained to you though

We were thinking phonics too, however the other pictures were straightforward 4 letter words eg boat,tree etc etc.

I would put HAHA in the box and say " trick question "

Seriously though I think it's a typo.
I doubt a 4yr old in reception has covered the "ai" sounds yet which would make sense if the child was older as the pp above me suggested.

I thought ‘blue’ too. Is the paintbrush signifying a colour?

The closest I can think of is felt - but it’s not a felt, and my 4 year old has no clue what a felt is and it’s not a felt-tip anyway! It looks like a Chinese calligraphy brush!

That’s what husband said re a colour - it doesn’t have a colour filled in so we hope that maybe the printers ink ran out?!

Having said that, it's weird if you also have BOAT in four boxes rather than three.
