Oh just read your updates and it's not that sheet.

Just leave it blank and write a note on it. I've had to do that before when the instructions or clues were incomprehensible.

Mrscog · 12/01/2019 17:16

I think I’d just leave it. I am appalled that 4 year olds are getting such bollocks for homework. An extra session of play would be so much more educational. I’d consider moving school OP they clearly have no clue.

ItchyTeeth · 12/01/2019 17:18

G L U E ?...

Snowangel23 · 12/01/2019 17:28

If you post a pic of the whole sheet, it might help to work it out. But equally sure the teacher won't mind if it's not the exact word!

DippyAvocado · 12/01/2019 17:33

It's definitely a phoneme frame - either b-r-u-sh or p-ai-n-t , depending what level phonics they have reached. Phoneme frames are very commonly used in phonics teaching.

Sh is a phoneme in the same way ch and th are.

chickaletta2020 · 12/01/2019 17:34

@DippyAvocado have you read OP's updates? Words like 'tree' had 4 boxes too.. so it's not a phoneme frame.

DippyAvocado · 12/01/2019 17:37

Ok, that makes no sense then. Unless OP has got all the other answers wrong! Although I can't think of an alternative for tree that has four phonemes.....

Mummylife2018 · 12/01/2019 17:42

Definitely put what Cinderella suggested

H-E-L-P

Cherrypickerpopoff · 12/01/2019 17:44

Is it phonics? 4 sounds in p ai n t and b r u sh

Snowangel23 · 12/01/2019 17:48

It definitely looks like a segmenting sheet/phoneme frame from twinkl. Unless they've stuck bits from other sources with it, it will be a box per sound so may be that some of the other words are not quite correct. It's sometimes near impossible to work out what the word should be without the context of the sounds being used. The picture they use for fizz being a good example!

MsChookandtheelvesofFahFah · 12/01/2019 17:52

Agree snowangel, I remember racking my brain over the picture of a girl, the answer being 'Eve'. Confused

nuttybutter · 12/01/2019 17:56

It's a printed resource, not prepared by the teacher. It's either an error or the colour is missing.

chickaletta2020 · 12/01/2019 19:10

Looks like a useless bit of homework anyway 😂

LiGlitterBug · 12/01/2019 19:26

Can’t help with the homework I’m afraid (I’d probably go for b-r-u-sh) but I teach Reception and my class have definitely covered digraph like ‘ai’ and ‘oa’- they come up quite early in the Jolly Phonics scheme. I would expect most of my class to be able to read and write these digraphs (some children with support, of course)

I do agree that’s it a bit of a daft idea for homework- but that’s another issue altogether!

Coconut0il · 12/01/2019 20:49

That's a phoneme frame. One sound per box. So b/r/u/sh.
Is it definitely boat and not sh/i/p?
Trying to think what the r/ai/n one would be with 4 boxes...

chickaletta2020 · 12/01/2019 20:53

@LiGlitterBug the reception class at the school I work at hasn't covered those sounds yet, but they do read write inc and it's a totally different format from jolly phonics.

LiGlitterBug · 13/01/2019 09:35

@chickaletta2020 It definitely depends on the scheme the class is following- which is why using these pre printed sheets can be a bit of a headache!
You do sometimes get little gems like this though...

bookmum08 · 13/01/2019 10:35

LiGlitter that is so adorable. But what would be the 'correct' word?
Cup
Mug
Tea
Hot

I am genuinely curious!

chickaletta2020 · 13/01/2019 11:30

@LiGlitterBug 😍

LiGlitterBug · 13/01/2019 11:36

@bookmum08 Not my original sadly, but I’d assume it was either cup or mug due to the shape of the third box- suggests it needs a letter with a descender. ‘Tea’ would have a taller first box and ‘hot’ would have a taller first and last box.

I tend just to be chuffed if they write anything reasonable in the boxes!

Smeeeeeee · 13/01/2019 11:55

Those sheets do sometimes have mistakes.

Loving broo!

bookmum08 · 13/01/2019 12:05

I don't know what system schools used circa 1951 when my Dad started school, but to this day he always spells 'blue' as 'bloo'.

twoshedsjackson · 13/01/2019 12:09

When I was teaching (admittedly older pupils) I would specifically tell parents to let me know if homework genuinely had them baffled after an honest attempt; something like "Sorry, he spent 30 minutes on this, but didn't really get it". Obviously not thrilled at the thought of trawling through the work again, but if they haven't got it, it needs to be tackled again. Rather that than getting the correct answer with no understanding from parent, older sibling, leading me to assume that we can safely move on to the next step; I'd end up building on sand.....
Slightly off the point; my favourite inspired guess was from the Ladybird scheme (old, I know) Correct answer, "The dog likes Pat"; child's answer, "Lassie Meaty Chunks" which I felt was far more relevant and interesting....

tillytrotter1 · 13/01/2019 19:41

FORK and a poor drawing maybe?
