This is outside a talk by a Canadian Feminist.

A man with a megaphone, getting a crowd of women and men to chant, over and over, "transwomen are women! Sex work is work!"

Why only transwomen, not transmen?

What has prostitution got to do with gender identity - what's the link?

I can't see one - other than both are about people born men being able to do what they want, and fuck what women want, is that it?

This really gives me the chills, looks like something you might see in the Handmaid's Tale.

As for sport, you're happy for women's sport to be totally eroded then, just so trans women can feel validated

It's such an echo-chamber that people just end up wilfully misunderstanding other peoples posts in a desperate attempt to find someone to argue against! Maybe that's how it got to the trending box!

What is your point exactly? Do you even have one?

OdeToDiazepam · 12/01/2019 14:48

No wilful misunderstanding whatsoever

It's already happening. It's reality

Carrotss · 12/01/2019 14:48

Yes it's amazing how 'Might as well shut down the thread' could ever be misconstrued as 'Stop talking about this, Women'.

Well yeah, it does require a bit of a leap. As I said before, "might as well do something" is hardly demanding language, is it? I'd say it was quite a resigned, passive post as opposed to authoritative in any way.

Juells · 12/01/2019 14:49

Keep banging that drum Grin

KitsandCaboodles · 12/01/2019 14:51

I wouldn't call it a leap. I merely turned around and there it was.

Carrotss · 12/01/2019 14:51

No wilful misunderstanding whatsoever

But Bertrand never said transwomen should be allowed to participate in womens sport did she?

What is your point exactly? Do you even have one?

A point? I was responding to a question? Confused

Pachyderm1 · 12/01/2019 14:52

I thought that most branches of feminism do not believe that transwomen are women and don't want them to be recognised as such? Something about invading women's spaces and experiences?

It’s actually only a minority of feminists who are anti-trans but they’re a very vocal one. This is a statement that will be met with ridicule on this thread because mumsnet is so anti-trans it gives a very skewed perception of reality. But it’s certainly not reflected in the real world. I engage with several real-world feminists forums (a feminist book club, sit on the board of a rape crisis centre, contribute occasional articles to a webzine about feminism) and transphobia is very rare - I’ve encountered it only a handful of times.

Carrotss · 12/01/2019 14:54

I wouldn't call it a leap. I merely turned around and there it was

Like I said, I should have known that mumsnetters would likely make that mistake. Next time I will be more clear.

KitsandCaboodles · 12/01/2019 14:56

I'm glad that I don't live in the real world then because the majority of people that I've talked to about this offline have been completely WTF about the idea that people can change sex and that men being in women's spaces.

KitsandCaboodles · 12/01/2019 14:57

Don't worry. You were perfectly clear.

Carrotss · 12/01/2019 14:59

Don't worry. You were perfectly clear.

Well obviously not, since you and others misunderstood me.

Pachyderm1 · 12/01/2019 15:00

Transgenderism isn’t about changing sex. Anti-trans activists peddle this myth because it distorts the issue and gives them a pseudo-scientific justification for what is, at the end of the day, just a typical and mundane prejudice.

I can only engage with trans threads on MN in a very limited way before they depress me too much, so I’ll hide this thread now. Have a nice weekend everyone.

AngryAttackKittens · 12/01/2019 15:02

I think if you tried the "biological sex is a spectrum" stuff on most people in real life they'd wonder what you'd been smoking.

KitsandCaboodles · 12/01/2019 15:04

Why is that so few TRAs and their supporters can stick around to defend their views? And for the record I am not anti-trans. I am anti men taking over women's hard earned rights and spaces and endangering them in the process.
.

OdeToDiazepam · 12/01/2019 15:04

Bertrand referrer to trans rights and equality then mentioned sports

OdeToDiazepam · 12/01/2019 15:06

Gender critical feminists are not transphobic, I believe genuine trans people with a grc are entitled to rights and protection.. guess what? They already are

It's self id I'm opposed to and losing sex segregated spaces

KitsandCaboodles · 12/01/2019 15:07

I'm probably not going to get an answer as you've flounced but as for Pseudo-science. The TRAs seem terribly passionate about it with their constant cry of Transwomen are women. So it isn't about changing sex but Transwomen are apparently still women because....? Or don't you believe that they are?

OdeToDiazepam · 12/01/2019 15:08

Kitsandcaboodles that's my experience too

And many others considering the 7000+ upwards votes on comments on news articles in that vein

Carrotss · 12/01/2019 15:08

Bertrand referrer to trans rights and equality then mentioned sports

That is true. She said she would argue for trans rights regarding pronouns and such because it largely doesn't matter, but in some cases, such as sports, it does matter.

OdeToDiazepam · 12/01/2019 15:10

Oh sorry, you're right that is what she said. My mistake

OdeToDiazepam · 12/01/2019 15:11

Like most of us, I don't care how people dress, live how you want as long as it doesn't hurt others

But it is hurting others. Legally, there needs to be that segregation and distinction between trans women and women

sackrifice · 12/01/2019 15:17

It’s actually only a minority of feminists who are anti-trans but they’re a very vocal one.

It's not ANTI-TRANS though is it?

It is ANTI-bullshit that takes away the rights of women to their own spaces and boundaries because laws are being changed without questioning the dogma in order to pacify some seriously violent TRAs.

Most trans people are perfectly capable of dealing with the difference between men and women.

NyNameIsTaken · 12/01/2019 15:27

Personally I do think trans women are women.

It's not possible to change sex so a male can not change into a female.

Woman = Adult human female.

Transwomen are transwomen and their sex is Male no matter how they identify.

Aridane · 12/01/2019 15:44

I agree with @Pachyderm1
