To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Have had a few jobs with perks. Used to work for a bank waaaayyyyy back when I was young and silly. We got a non contribution final salary pension, loans and mortgages at 0.5 above base rate, staff share scheme, higher interest rates on savings, 6 months full, 6 months half pay sick leave, 23 holiday days plus bank holidays, death in service benefit, loads of social stuff, pizza if you stayed late for whatever reason, left over wine after customer had been invited in. I left. I had no idea that it would have been a very good job to stick around in. I can't see me ever getting another job like it ever, I doubt that those benefits even exist at entry level anymore.

I am self employed now. Benefits include free access to the fridge and snack cupboard, am able to do the school run, can work in my pjs if I fancy it, shove the washing on the line, walk the dog at lunchtime etc.

I used to work in a butchers too. Free turkey crown at Christmas Grin.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 12/01/2019 17:06

I work in a school.

Free parking. That's the only perk I can think of.

We buy our own tea, coffee, milk, washing up liquid etc. I also tend to buy my own resources and equipment for working with students now due to the cuts, not to mention regularly providing food, stationary, San Pro etc. out of my own pocket for children whose parents consistently fail to do so.

I am entitled to a 'free' lunch from the school canteen but this is supposed to make up for the fact that I don't get a break due to being on duty all lunchtime (I'd much rather have a break!) so it has to be something I can eat whilst patroling the playground and the food is so vile I don't even bother most of the time.

I don't count the holidays as a 'perk' really because I don't get paid for them.

I’m a civil servant so basically just my pension! We have to provide our own mugs, tea bags, milk etc sometimes I buy my own pens and notebooks too...

DH has the works, fancy chocolate, meat, cheese, soft drinks, nespresso machines, free ski trip, travels first class everywhere (so gets aimiles), £17 lunch allowance every day in the office and £25 dinner allowance if he is still there at 6 on deliveroo, if he is still there are 7 he can get a cab home, £60 a month towards a gym membership, top end health, dental and travel insurance for our whole family and very swanky offices in Mayfair, plus the occasional fancy party at a private members club and sometimes they get tickets to sporting events although these are gifts from clients not benefits from work - think: premier football, rugby, cricket etc

HotSauceCommittee · 12/01/2019 17:16

5 days extra holiday after you’ve been in the organisation for five years. That’s me next year. The rest is shit though.

Stickystickystickstick · 12/01/2019 17:18

Very envious of some of your perks!! We get:-

  • free private healthcare
  • free private dental care
  • free pension
  • free tea, coffee and soft drinks
  • free car parking
  • 30 days annual leave as standard
SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 12/01/2019 17:19

We don’t get any perks from the company I work for but our manager is amazing 🥰 regularly go into the staff room to find she’s left donuts/chocolate s etc for everyone in the summer she went out and got ice creams she’s genuinely really caring and fair too my favourite manager by far!! 🥰

YoniHuman · 12/01/2019 17:20

No overdue fines, or paying to reserve an item. Our pick of the withdrawn stock.

Bananafritter · 12/01/2019 17:22

Clothes shop! 50% discount & a substantial amount of free clothes for my ‘uniform’

wildone03 · 12/01/2019 17:27

Flexible working, working form home, sick pay, pension, family health insurance, death in service, insurance to pay 50% of salary every year til 65 if fall into longterm illness or disability and can no longer do our job, summer and xmas partys/days/ weekends, occasional lunches and drinks, wear whatever i want to work (usually jeans and jumper)

I love the company i work for and the guys (and dog) i work with.

I take my daughter in as often as i need to. The big boss sent my daughter an expensive tennis racket and balls for xmas present after a conversation with her about her favourite sport.

LeSquigh · 12/01/2019 17:28

Emergency services here so not really much from employer although pension is ok. I get half price Dominos though, and money off quite a few various outlets, mostly food!

MeredithGrey1 · 12/01/2019 17:28

Wow I need a new job!

I work in an office for a big international company and all I can think of is that they let us leave at 16:30 on New Year’s Eve..
Other than that pension is basic, maternity leave/pay is statutory, bonuses non-existent, no flexible working, no working from home (despite it being an entirely computer based job that could 100% be done remotely).

wildone03 · 12/01/2019 17:29

Free tea/coffe/juice/biscuits too

couchparsnip · 12/01/2019 17:30

Civil service - so I get the pension and thats it. We buy our own tea, coffee, milk etc. There are never any pens in the stationery cupboard so I tend to bring them in.

milkmoustache · 12/01/2019 17:32

My favourite temp job was at Norwich city football ground. The staff canteen was super cheap and sold mainly Delia's recipes, happy days!

Pinkblanket · 12/01/2019 17:35

Free tea/coffee/milk (which I don't use).
A company car (not really a perk as I need it to do the job.
Christmas do is paid for.
Discounted rate at a small number of hotels owned by the company.
A pension, but it's tiny compared to the local government one I had previously.
When I worked in local government we had Flexi time, toil, lots more annual leave, a discount scheme we could use (bit like a topcashback type of thing), lease cars. I think people are underestimating how useful things like Flexi time and a pension are.

Presh12345 · 12/01/2019 17:35

I work in the UAE where the benefits are amazing....tax free salary, return flights for you and family once a year to home country, accommodation allowance, utility allowance, medical insurance, schools fees paid......

Pinkblanket · 12/01/2019 17:36

Six months full pay when sick is pretty good in local government too.

Kpo58 · 12/01/2019 17:38

I get paid and I have somewhere warm to be in the winter.

LynseyLou1982 · 12/01/2019 17:39

40 days holiday a year and a final salary pension scheme.

Grumblepants · 12/01/2019 17:43

Finance- free parking. That's it. Pension is crap, no bonus, no sick leave, no death in service, I don't even have a phone on my desk. If I get a call I have to use someone else's line. So to all nhs workers and teachers, you are not the only ones with a crap deal 😣

3WildOnes · 12/01/2019 17:44

GrapesAreMyJam What do you do?

ShortandSweet96 · 12/01/2019 17:46

Home time.

darksideofthemooncup · 12/01/2019 17:54

Free parking, subsidised pension, feee tea and coffee, weekends at centreparcs. Family fun days, excellent Xmas do and this year we all got iPads as a Xmas bonus. It's a small company but they look after us
