To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 12/01/2019 14:40

Erm free tea and coffee. Good pension. And free train travel on our line(s) and 70% off other companies and Euro Star etc.

I'd rather have a company gym any day 😄

mrbob · 12/01/2019 14:45

And people say people working for the public sector get unfair advantages Grin

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 12/01/2019 15:04

Teacher. Absolutely fuck all.
Unless you count the sandwich made with stale bread, cheap marg and plastic cheese that we get before parents evening. They are leftovers from canteen at lunchtime.

RedTitsMcGinty · 12/01/2019 15:27

I’m an academic, so no tangible perks, not even a free teabag. Good pension (although that’s under threat) and the flexibility to choose which 60 hours a week I want to work. I also have my own office, which is increasingly rare.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 15:29

@pumpkinpie01 after my morning I could do with a milkshake with a shit load of Baileys cream. Sounds lovely, but I agree. Nothing worse with being at work for no reason!

HermioneKipper · 12/01/2019 15:31

Good pension, good mat benefits. Free milk, tea and coffee (although coffee horrid!) Free healthcare, free Oyster card. Discounts on other train companies. Flexible working. Has been a great place to work but getting more difficult as lots of budget/staff cuts

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 15:33

Some of these are amazing. I've clearly been working in the wrong areas!

NHS, police, teachers... I feel for you all. Such important jobs, absolutely no thanks for it. Disgraceful really.

divadee · 12/01/2019 15:34

As much as printing and photocopying as I want and I can get away with. Other than that fuck all. Not even a cup of tea.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 12/01/2019 15:51

27 days hol + all public holidays (potentially a lot in Germany)
Bonus up to 15% each year
Half price rail travel (can use for personal as well as company travel)
Can work flexibly and from home a lot of the time, and aside from certain fixed commitments, plan my own schedule
Discounts on events and shows, though there are never any I want to go to
All the coffee I can drink, and that’s a LOT ☕️ Grin
Discounts on personal development seminars and language classes
The odd freebie from publishers and business partners. Last Christmas I got a present from the hotel I most often use for business travel.

But the best perk is the one a friend suggested: that I sign up for all loyalty schemes offered by hotel chains and airlines, and get a credit card with air miles. She was right. It adds up and I’ve had some excellent hotel stays, upgrades, discounts and free train trips and flights, all from just doing my normal business travel.

daisypond · 12/01/2019 15:57

Free tea, coffee, milk, and a fruit delivery once a week.

waterandlemonjuice · 12/01/2019 16:07

Flexible working (from home one day a week)
Laptop
Mobile phone
Free parking
Free coffee and other drinks
Employee help service with eg free counselling
25% discount at various hotels and restaurants
Pension
Christmas party all paid

Sexnotgender · 12/01/2019 16:10

Free house is our biggest perk, comes with my husbands job.

I earn a good wage and get a bonus twice a year.

RoseMartha · 12/01/2019 16:17

Flexible work times

chaoscategorised · 12/01/2019 16:18

We officially get access to a perks system with tons of discounts and occasional freebies (the company pays our membership), plus informally lots of paid staff lunches and nights out, total flexibility and paid time for doctors/internet being installed at home/taking car for MOT type stuff, once a year trip abroad for a long weekend, treats (biscuits, cake, fruit) in the office regularly, occasional fun things like beer and pizza on a Friday afternoon... It's pretty good. Would prefer health insurance though!

Purpleartichoke · 12/01/2019 16:22

I work for a non-profit. Perks do not exist. They can’t even legally bring snacks in without filing a ton of paperwork and showing a business justification.

On the flip side our compensation packages are very reasonable, we get more leave than is typical, and work hours are set by the employee. So instead of beer I get actual work-life balance.

easyandy101 · 12/01/2019 16:28

25% discount, a breville toasty machine and my boss encourages me to drink irresponsibly

Satsumaeater · 12/01/2019 16:35

In my current job the odd meal out and free drinks, along with minimum pension

In my previous job we had to pay for all our social events but I had a better pension, private health and life insurance and a few other things like very cheap Microsoft Office.

I've never worked anywhere where there were really cool perks. However, as someone said, flexible working is more valuable than anything else and not just for parents.

PottyPotterer · 12/01/2019 16:41

Erm I get to cuddle puppies and that's about it. Oh and kittens and about a million boxes of chocolates at Christmas. Monetary perks - zero Hmm.

tinytemper66 · 12/01/2019 16:49

13 weeks holiday every year!

lightlypoached · 12/01/2019 16:50

Private healthcare for the family
Free Deliveroo lunch
Unlimited holiday (as long as u get the job done no one counts)
Gym membership
Share scheme
Pension (not very good though! )
Work at home
Free tea coffee hot choc, soft drinks etc
On tap beer and Prosecco (after 3,30pm)
Beer fridge in the office
Snacks and fruit
All travel paid for (I'm home based)

I work for a tech startup. Grin it's just fab.
