To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

The main perk for me at the minute is unlimited overtime (both in amount and for when you choose to work) at a set rate that's roughly equal to double time.

I've slammed in all the hours under the sun this month and have nearly trebled my usual take home salary which is very much needed in the wake of Christmas.

Love these threads. Amazing what some people get Shock Grin

Though I do think you sometimes forget - or don't realise - what is a 'perk' rather than usual practice until you move to somewhere or read a MN thread and find not everywhere has them.

The 'who pays for your Christmas Meal' threads usually highlight this.

marcopront · 12/01/2019 18:02

Free housing with fruit trees in the garden
Free schooling for my daughter
Medical insurance
Flights every two years
Snacks at break time
Meals if I do boarding duty for both of us
Access to swimming pool, tennis courts etc

torthecatlady · 12/01/2019 18:04

So jealous of all these perks Sad
We have a Christmas meal out.
That's it. No special maternity pay either.

Member869894 · 12/01/2019 18:07

public sector so good pension - and lots of flexibility - I work from home at least two-three days a week which for me is great as I can be in when the dcs come in from school , do a bit of cleaning/cooking during the day and walk the dog from 8-9 instead ofspending that time travelling to work

recklessgran · 12/01/2019 18:07

Small private care home - tea/coffee whenever you want. Toast/orange juice/cake/chocolate all supplied for staff to help themselves when it suits depending on workload. Hot lunch and pudding for all staff on shift. Owner sometimes brings in cream cakes/McDonalds breakfast.
Cash bonus at Christmas, Easter egg at Easter, Red rose and chocs on Mother's Day. I love my boss but the downside is minimum wage and fairly hectic working environment, none the less we all love our residents and our jobs.

1sttimeunicorn · 12/01/2019 18:26

Unlimited holiday Blush

GrandTheftWalrus · 12/01/2019 18:29

No perks as such but when we are working away from home we get 3 meals a day and unlimited tea and coffee.

Other than that getting paid to see concerts etc can be a good perk depending on where you are working.

Last one I seen in full was madness.

stroan · 12/01/2019 18:39

We get money to spend on a free course of our choice (non work related) every year. Duvet days (no-one uses them as it often leaves your colleagues stuck), unlimited fruit, tea, coffee, squash. Extra annual leave after 3 years service, flexitime. Paid time off to work on personal projects if they have a link to your actual job.

Small company but our boss values employee satisfaction.

Stayoutoftheforest · 12/01/2019 18:46

I get a house a car and basic foods there is also no bills as the house is entirely self sufficient with regards to power, water and gas. This makes up for the extremely low wages and endless unpaid overtime that inevitably takes place when living at your workplace so not sure it’s a perk. Sometimes my boss brings me treat foods and nobody objects if the dog ends up hanging out in my house so that’s a perk

Yura · 12/01/2019 18:49

Free private health insurance for me and family. car allowance. work from home possible, but not (too) regularly. heavily subsidised lunch. Not that much, but pay and bonus are very, very good.

Biggerknickersagain · 12/01/2019 19:16

Free tea and coffee and cake if there's any left at the end of the day.
Not officially but free 'left over' food from buffets or from large set meal parties if there's any left and it's just going to be binned.
Got £40 in vouchers and some chocs for Christmas. In my specific job, because I'm alone I can take a break pretty much when I want - downside to that though is I have to respond at any point to any request/demand/phonecall/email as I'm the only one there so it can get hectic sometimes covering several departments at a time, and also have my own work to do as well.
% off foods and beverages and other services if I visit our of work time for me and 4 people.
Little over min wage but not much.

Rufus27 · 12/01/2019 19:19

Through my work, very little: free parking and the odd Pritt Stick if I’m working from home.

Through DP’s work I do better: subsidised health insurance and free or very cheap flights (UK and international) plus cheap travel for friends and family.

Still wouldn’t swap my job for his!

dontknowwhattodo80 · 12/01/2019 19:20

DH's work provide a company car ( obv DH pays extra tax!), personal/company fuel, private medical cover and occasional freebies of the products the company make

Maneandfeathers · 12/01/2019 19:34

I can take my dogs to work plus get heavily discounted veterinary treatment.
Free tea and coffee.

The rest is rubbish Grin

Bluemascara4 · 12/01/2019 19:35

I working in NHS so no!

AmIthatbloodycold · 12/01/2019 19:36

I was going to say none but there is a pension. To which I contribute

And free abuse from the public

Smile
EdWinchester · 12/01/2019 19:38

I feel my job is perk-less.

Although we get a very generous pension, parking and I get 43 days of leave and a large death payment.

Didsomeonesaybunny · 12/01/2019 19:46

We get free breakfast and lunch.

Someone I know had unlimited beer (the type changed daily) and I was surprised that hardly anyone utilised it.

echt · 12/01/2019 19:52

Echt - a pension definitely is a perk even if (gasp) you have to pay into it! They cost companies millions

A pension is nota perk, the employer has to do it, and I have to pay for it. A perk is an extra that does not cost the employee anything.

adriennewillfly · 12/01/2019 19:55

DH gets unlimited holiday on top of lots of other things. He's working at a tech startup. Not heard of a perk to beat that

Gillian1980 · 12/01/2019 19:56

Free tea/coffee and biscuits. Cake for team meetings. Few paid team lunches out per year and 2 Xmas meals paid for.

Work from home, nobody checking in on us unnecessarily, flexi hours, paid sick leave and appointments.

Apparently there’s a holiday home in France we can book to use at a very low rate but I’ve never looked into it.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 12/01/2019 19:57

State school....

Holidays aren’t a perk - we don’t get paid for them

We pay all our tea/coffee/etc and have been told to stop bringing treats in as we are a healthy school and too many treats aren’t treats.

I do get to park in the car park.

It’s genuinely true, working in a school is the only place where you steal things from home to use at work... I spend a huge amount of money buying things for my nurture group rather than getting the school to pay for it.

0hMyDayz · 12/01/2019 19:59

Free tea, coffee and juice
Subsidised canteen and coffee shop
Free fruit
Flexible working hours
Free car parking
Discounts or cash back for 100's of shops
Free charging for electric cars....Hmm

mightyducks · 12/01/2019 20:01

I’m work in Local Government so no perks, the only thing I can think of is free flu jab!
A friend works in London with a free beer tap - as much as they want and the office is open 24 hours a day so some even go back after the pubs close!
