To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

A good employer pension match (8%), free medical insurance, life assurance (4x salary), fresh fruit every day and cakes on Friday.

Best perk for me is the fact I can claim mileage travelling to my other office once a week. Its a nice little earner!

isseywithcats · 12/01/2019 13:36

we can have tea coffee and sugar free coke or lemonade when we are working and if we go for a meal in the restaurant out of working hours we get 50% discount on meals for up to 4 people (tgis)

HopefullyAnonymous · 12/01/2019 13:37

@RZNW yes I forgot the first 30 minutes of overtime on any shift being for Lizzy. Although when I’m regularly pulling 17 hour shifts in a rural post with no one to relieve me I suppose 30 minutes is neither here nor there Hmm

LokiBear · 12/01/2019 13:39

13 weeks unpaid holiday. Im a teacher. I work from home for some of those weeks planning. Still a perk though.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 12/01/2019 13:42

The odd dvd every now and then, occasional t-shirts for different releases.

3WildOnes · 12/01/2019 13:42

My husband gets health insurance and free drinks every Thursday in their rooftop bar. As well as the usuual free hot drinks.

I work for a charity. We get free hot drinks and communal butter, though I think my manager might actually pay for this out of her own money. I can buy (and do) an extra 3 weeks holiday every year on top of my 25 days plus bank holidays.

Hortonlovesahoo · 12/01/2019 13:44

Free tea/coffee/softdrinks. Beer every Friday after work, Christmas hamper, good Flexi working conditions, internet paid for home working, good pension package, various discounts for home appliances, reduced lunch if you want it (you pay a subsidised amount each month and you get lunch very cheaply).

In a previous job we had an onsite gym/massage centre, full canteen.

Cherries101 · 12/01/2019 13:45

Free tea coffee, paid IVF leave, a lot of flexibility, alot of discounts on virtually everything.

LoudBatPerson · 12/01/2019 13:48

Perks wise my company is pretty great. Good healthcare, pension and death benefits and things such as cycle schemes and wellbeing helplines, legal advice etc. They are good on flexible working and working from home. Allow your to pretty much choose what computer equipment you like to work with. Offer desk and chair changes if desired.

We also have a huge variety of snacks (healthy and crisps/chocolate/biscuits) types available and an array of hot of cold drinks. Continental breakfast selection everyday. Fridge and cupboard full of basic bits such as bread/salad/cheeses/meats/yoghurts/soups/beans/spaghetti etc. So can make lunches if you don't want to go out.

Also there is always basic medicines available for common ailments and sanitary protection if needed.

Once a month a masseuse visits.

Regular social event all paid for and frequent competitions with awesome prizes ( TVs, phones, vouchers). Each month birthdays are celebrated and you get a big present from the company and there will be cake and food and free drinks.

Two big parties all inclusive a year.

Normal free products and discounts on things we sell.

Perks wise I work for an amazing company really.

phoebesmaternitytrousers · 12/01/2019 13:48

I work for myself and sometimes treat myself to a nap at lunch time

LizzieMacQueen · 12/01/2019 13:49

Nothing is really free though.

If you as the employee are not being taxed on it then your employer should be.

Lookingforadvice123 · 12/01/2019 13:54

Nothing like you would get in the private sector eg free anything! But a generous civil service pension (employer pays 19%), the equivalent of about 6 weeks annual leave, flexi time/flexible working, job security, 6 months fully paid maternity leave, sick pay, optional teen time working, etc.

KimchiLaLa · 12/01/2019 13:56

Tea, coffee, milk, sugar - all of that plus a nice coffee machine
Free gym
Heavy discounts on the industry we are in. I can't say what it is, but it helps A LOT with holidays :)
Not bad but it's not google, where pretty much everything is free, but I've heard the culture is terrible.

YellowOcelot · 12/01/2019 14:01

There is a water dispenser.

MarmiteTermite · 12/01/2019 14:01

I work in an independent school but not as a teacher. I get 10 weeks holiday (but 4 of that is unpaid), free lunches and break time snacks, a pension that isn’t nearly as generous as the teachers and I would get a 50% discount on fees, but don’t send my DC there so don’t benefit from this.

sproutsandparsnips · 12/01/2019 14:03

NHS here too. Good holidays. Free use of fridge to store milk that we have to buy ourselves (though in my last job we had to buy our own fridge but could use the milk). Free flu jab. Free uniform (but not shoes). I believe that staff who work Christmas Day may get a free lunch in the canteen......

RZNW · 12/01/2019 14:04

@HopefullyAnonymous "Lizzy" 😂😂

Cracking up at that. I originally wrote "Prince WhatsHisNuts" but swallowed my resentment for a hot minute.

16.5 hours yesterday, in case misery really does love company 😊 x

KezzabellaB · 12/01/2019 14:08

Perks? What are they? The company I work for don't even buy us tea and coffee for while we're at work! Got nothing at Christmas either, not even a thank you. Clearly I'm in the wrong job!

anniehm · 12/01/2019 14:12

Free lunch whenever we have a funeral and ... an unusual perk, a free funeral (you can guess what I do)

GeorgeTheHippo · 12/01/2019 14:15

I am a civil servant connected with the ministry of justice.

25 days hol plus 8 bank hols and 1 privilege day.

Pension contribution is 15% of salary.

No salary increments, no pay rises as pay frozen, have to pay for tea and coffee.

Flexi time but no home working.

Meh.

SparklyLeprechaun · 12/01/2019 14:22

Free soft drinks, beer (no one ever gets drunk in the office btw, we are responsible adults), snacks, fruit, breakfast, lunch once a week, pizza every Friday evening, yoga and pilates. Parties every time we've got something to celebrate.

Plus the usual, health insurance, pension, a bit of dental insurance, bonus at the birth of a child.

blue25 · 12/01/2019 14:25

Pensions are a definitely a perk to me. Not sure about NHS, but I contribute 8.5% & employer puts in 18%

MyBreadIsEggy · 12/01/2019 14:26

Through DH’s job we get decent housing that we pay an absolute pittance for. We checked the normal market rate rent for a house this size, and we pay less than a quarter of that!
It’s a pretty fantastic perk!

tiggerkid · 12/01/2019 14:29

I wouldn't say everyone gets this type of perks. Do these people you mention work for a brewery? People normally don't like anything taken away from them, so I can see why they are up in arms so to speak. Unlimited beer doesn't mean nobody does any work as human psychology would suggest that only some people would literally take advantage of such an offer. Most people would get bored or fed up and would rarely use it. However, people like to think that they can if they want to. Especially if it was available and now it's not.

We definitely don't get any unlimited beer at work :)

However overall we get the following:

  • 25-30 days annual leave (depending on grade)
  • pension - whatever we contribute, the company doubles
  • annual bonus % of salary (varies by grade)
  • gym subsidy (50%)
  • subsidised staff canteen
  • retail discounts (e.g. cinema, shopping vouchers etc)
  • life insurance and death in service
  • car allowance (subject to grade)
  • interest free travel loan for season tickets (up to 5K)
  • private medical insurance
  • maternity leave 7 months on full pay

Plus, of course, travel expenses paid by the company. If we are on company travel, we are allowed to have a glass of wine with our evening meal but definitely no unlimited beer :)

Timmytoo · 12/01/2019 14:32

We had a nightclub on the top floor at my previous company, complete with a DJ and free unlimited drinks every Friday for all staff and their partners! Needless to say we all finished at 4pm. The vibe was I loved that company.

Once a month, they'd throw a HUGE party with free unlimited food and drinks and booked out hotel rooms so nobody had to drive.

Before we could go to the club, we'd have a half hour company meeting with all staff and 20 employees who performed the best during that week could choose and pop a balloon. I'm the balloon was a piece of paper with a figure on it - anything from 0 (booby prize) up to R5000, was in there and they'd receive that on their upcoming salary. Great incentive.

Nobody was allowed to work past 4.30pm which was end of day. You'd have to pack up by 4.20, ready to leave, as they didn't believe in working late.

The people who met their performance targets were treated to a yearly prize which consisted of a full inclusive holiday abroad with the rest of the chosen employees and they didn't need to spend their leave

Geez, I loved working there!
