To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Free tea & coffee, health insurance & a Christmas bonus.

RZNW · 12/01/2019 12:30

@HopefullyAnonymous PREACH! Same over here x

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 12/01/2019 12:30

Ok pension, BUPA, income protection and decent life assurance. 7 weeks holiday. Completely free boozy Christmas party and monthly paid for trip to the pub. Few other social events in the year. Free fruit.

KatherinaMinola · 12/01/2019 12:30

Free lunch out occasionally.

In previous jobs:

Free yoga and fitness classes
Books and magazines
Event tickets
Lots of free food
Christmas closure
Staff outings in work time

and various perks I didn't take up like reduced gym fees and health insurance.

Lovemusic33 · 12/01/2019 12:30

None here, very occasionally I will get lunch bought for me but that’s about it. I work in mental health/care.

CantWaitToRetire · 12/01/2019 12:31

Contribution towards gym membership
Good pension scheme
Maternity and paternity leave
Season ticket loan
Private health scheme
Time off for medical appointments
Free piece of fruit every day
Free tea, coffee, hot chocolate
Work from home if not client facing
Charge card for business travel expenses
30 days holiday plus BHs

LaurieMarlow · 12/01/2019 12:31

The pension is not great, it's not final salary but career average and it doesn't kick in until i'm 67.

To be fair, that is still fucking awesome compared to anything in the private sector.

I often think that people who have decent pensions don't value them as they should.

I have tonnes of glamorous perks in my private sector job, but what you have is infinitely more valuable.

HoraceCope · 12/01/2019 12:32

Washing up liquid, to wash our cups, paper towels to dry them

mamaduckbone · 12/01/2019 12:33

Decent pension
Tea and coffee and occasional biscuits
Long holidays (although no choice when I take them)
Some of the perks on here make my mind boggle.
(Teacher!)

LookMoreCloselier · 12/01/2019 12:33

Final salary pension still open but not for new joiners
Subsidised canteen, really good
Subsidised onsite childcare, for those who can secure a space that is
Free hot drinks
Free on-site fancy gym and exercise classes
7 weeks holidays with the option to sell a week or buy an extra week
Subsidised company-owned hotels
Bupa

That's a big multinational.

blue25 · 12/01/2019 12:34

Not much day to day. Can work from home whenever it suits, which is great. A pension that will pay out 34k annually on retirement makes it all worthwhile!

Oncloudten · 12/01/2019 12:34

Flu jab
Xmas hamper
30 days annual leave plus all bank holidays
Health plan that pays towards the cost of dental optical care etc
Easter egg
Free Xmas lunch
Good pension deal

Not bad really

Dothehappydance · 12/01/2019 12:35

Free tea and coffee.

I don't drink tea or coffee.

Fairly good holiday entitlement, reasonable pension and Flexi working, so not too bad overall.

Oncloudten · 12/01/2019 12:35

Oh and free tea and coffee

cuppycakey · 12/01/2019 12:36

Good pension
13 weeks paid holiday
Overseas travel once or twice a year where I can take someone with me for free.
Work from home when I want - this is probably the best perk for me.

Wauden · 12/01/2019 12:37

No perks, but:
Final salary pension scheme and ability to top that up as it will be free of tax/reduced tax;
Flexi time - although if I take it up I get behind with work;
Work from home - need to guard against a meeting being put in calendar for that day;
Subsidy for local gym;
Staff discounts/offers;
I work in public sector. I'm not really bothered about not getting perks because of my future pension pot, which will be very well deserved.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/01/2019 12:38

NHS-
pension (if I actually reach retirement age , they keeping moving the age /increasing the contributions/ decreasing the worth)

Travel expenses (own car though there is a scheme available of=n Salary Sacrifice) but only for journeys within the work day not to/from work

Some discounts like gym membership, mobile phone . Some classes like Zumba (to improve work/life balance but nowhere near my workplace)

Work mobile (bog standard phone no iPhone type)

Any healthcare appointments have to be on your own time unless you are actually an In Patient (then that would be Sick Leave)

No tea/coffee laid on and some places don;t even have water coolers.

Hideous working conditions last Summer , no aircon on most sites and having to fill in another DATIX while the sweat was literally dripping off me Hmm about the excessive temperatures in clinics .

We do get a Uniform Grin , well half a uniform, we get the tunic but have to buy our own trousers and shoes which have to fit the Uniform Policy .

At least I;ll get to Heaven though !

Theunreasonableone · 12/01/2019 12:39

I’m public sector so we dont get many freebie perks however the great pension, really generous annual leave, season ticket loan, annual increments and flexible working make me think I am very lucky. I also have fantastic colleagues.

DH has more traditional perks such as bonus, annual pay rise, unlimited snacks and drinks provided, a barista onsite, lunches etc.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/01/2019 12:40

Oh - Free Flu Jab

Used to have good Occy Health but now you don;t get any kind of fast track

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 12/01/2019 12:42

Teacher. I get holiday when the DC are off and the parents of my class often buy me gorgeous gifts at christmas/end of the year. I don't think I've had to buy wine or prosecco for about 7 years. Always good biscuits in the staff room. Free satsumas at break time.

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 12/01/2019 12:42

Well mines kind of a strange one. I manage a care home. I'm salaried so I work a lot of overtime for nothing as my salary is so low. It worked out as less than minimum wage for a few months!

However we don't charge extortionate amounts like many homes do, and the level of care is second to none, we got outstanding on a recent inspection.

I have flexibility such as being able to come in a bit later or leave a bit earlier if I have a drs appointment or something. But many times I have had to cancel last minute due to being needed there.

Oh and the privilege of being on call 24/7! Someone rings in sick on a weekend and we can't find cover - I'll have to cover meaning I do a lot of 12 day stretches as I obviously still have to do my mon-fri jobs. Been at work all day and a night shift worker calls in sick an hour before shift? Me again! And if there's something I have to attend the following morning I still have to do it.

However, I know I'm appreciated and I'm very lucky in that I love my job. Couldn't do it otherwise!

WontonSoupForTheSoul · 12/01/2019 12:45

Great pension
On-site gym with instructors
On-site, heavily subsidised restaurant (ie, full main course for c. £3)
Free teas and coffees (and £1 cappuccinos/lattes etc from the restaurant)
Can work from home and set own hours
Annual bonus
Annual pay increase
Lots of budget dedicated to further education and CPD
Generally a nice culture where people work hard and are happy to get stuck in to help others out
Annual Christmas party and summer party. Staff have to pay a very nominal amount but then the bar is free until midnight and the food is good
Never have to argue to get expenses paid etc- if you’re out of pocket, you will be reimbursed. Good common sense approach to this. A colleague became ill a few years ago and I ended up taking her to A&E in a taxi. I was able to claim the cost back.

Crinkle77 · 12/01/2019 12:45

We get discounts on days out, eating out, beauty treatments etc... Every year they put on a day for it the staff with free beauty treatments, massages, haircuts. They have health professionals such as chiropodists who are subsidised by work. I sprained my ankle last year and work paid for 4 free physio sessions. There is a sports centre which although not free is really cheap for staff. They put on cheap coach trips and film nights with free food and alcohol. We get extra days off at Christmas and Easter which we don't have to use our leave for. We have a very good CEO who understands th at happy staff are productive staff.

PenguinPandas · 12/01/2019 12:46

Last employer:

30 days paid holiday plus bank hols paid
Let me work school hours and have summer holidays off
Free tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, fruit and sometimes lunches
Wine / drinks paid for once a month
Private healthcare
Around 10% discount on lots of shops.
£100 at Christmas and Christmas meal paid for.

One job I had I was given an apartment in a 5 star hotel for a month with pool and chauffered in every morning in a Jaguar. Lots of parties with famous people with champagne and canapes. Pay was dire but amazing.

Another one we got a weekend in Paris paid for.

dalmatianmad · 12/01/2019 12:46

NHS, we get absolutely nothing for free, no perks whatsoever.

We have to pay a massive monthly fee to park.

When the patients food is thrown away it is a sackable offence to eat it....

We dont get provided with any tea/coffee/sugar/milk.

All a bit rubbish
