To ask your work 'perks'

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 12/01/2019 10:49

I've read a story this morning about the employees of a company being up in arms that their 'free, unlimited beer' perk has been limited.
Due to noise complaints and a concern for the working environment they've been 'rationed' to four glasses between 5 and 7pm on Thursday and Friday.

I'm gobsmacked!!!

Before that they were able to drink as much as they wanted whenever they wanted throughout the working day - how was any work getting done?

Are job perks like this normal? I was lucky enough to get a free tea in my last job and that was subject to conditions Grin
Does your job give you good perks? If so, where do you work? I'm on the hunt for a new job!

Good pension and holiday entitlement / sick pay. That's about it (nhs)

KitKat1985 · 12/01/2019 12:04

NHS nurse here - not loads of perks but free tea and coffee and leftover food from patient meals if there is any and a flu jab each winter.

VioletCharlotte · 12/01/2019 12:04

NHS so very few! Good pension scheme (if one can afford the 13% monthly contribution). And a free flu jab. That's about it.

FreshlyWashed · 12/01/2019 12:04

Oh dear. I was going to come on joyously and say "Work in a school... school holidays whoop whoop"

But so many not-very-happy posts from people who do make me feel quite sad. Sad
I don't teach, which must be the difference.

In previous jobs:

Free tea and filter coffee. Free fruit.
Christmas closedown. Free “welcome lunch.”

First class train travel, paid overtime, all time away from home paid overtime. Free tea and coffee. Left over M&S food from lunches.

Free health insurance. Non contributory pension.

Free library books from the university. Hmm Paid overtime.

Heavily discounted flights. Cheap hotels. Free crew food onboard including tea/coffee/soft drinks and leftover food from business/first class. Discounts at airport retailers/food.

Withasideofbeans · 12/01/2019 12:09

Free taxi on the way home, which is good when you finish at 3am. Apart from that, absolutely nothing. The threat of being sacked when you’re off work poorly, and the owner coming in and shouting for about an hour every day. I need a new job Sad

MaddieElla · 12/01/2019 12:10

Good final salary BRASS pension, death in service benefit (4 times salary), 40 days annual leave, plus a day in lieu for every bank holiday, so 8 extra days, very flexible working hours, ie no one minds if someone leaves 20 minutes early as long as the job is done, I've never missed a Christmas play it sports day due to boss letting me go and watch them (without having to make the time up), yearly bonus, yearly pay rise of at least 3% plus performance related bonus.

I'd be stupid to leave my job, as mundane as it can seem after 20 years.

Roomba · 12/01/2019 12:11

God, I need a change of career! The best I've ever managed to get was free home internet and TV package when I worked for a telecoms company - and that was only brought in after I'd worked there for years. Plus I didn't even use it as the Internet package/speed was crap compared to competitors (I was frowned on for this, unsurprisingly!). Oh, and the odd 10% discount on things with my union card in my next job. I did get 6 weeks off every summer as a teacher, but had to explain to people regularly that I didn't actually get paid for those weeks. The stress outweighed any perks they could have given us anyway.

Ready access to Consultant Surgeons and Anaesthetists for advice.

MaddieElla · 12/01/2019 12:12

Sorry, 30 days AL that should say, nearly 40 with lieu days.

tillytrotter1 · 12/01/2019 12:17

Teacher, red pens!

TooGood2BeFalse · 12/01/2019 12:18

I work in finance, a lot of great perks similar to those already mentioned.

But my favourite is 10 days paid leave if your KIDS are sick and you can't leave them.Seperate thing entirely from my own sick leave allowance. Hoping not to need them much, but my fave by far!

GOODORBAD · 12/01/2019 12:19

I think mat leave is the best perk of my job, six months full pay. Pension also good.

Otherwise very little - public sector!

MiniMum97 · 12/01/2019 12:19

Virtually none. We don't even get life insurance!

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 12/01/2019 12:19

Yeah the downside to the NHS pension is the contributions. I know many people who simply can't afford it and you're unable to reduce the amount.
Put up with it or opt out.

snowie01 · 12/01/2019 12:20

Free food and drink
Free access to a small gym
Free Parking on site (I catch the bus but if I had a car)
37 days holiday including Bank Hols
Shorter working hours during half terms but paid the same

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/01/2019 12:21

Good pension, death in service benefit of 6 times my salary, insurance to pay 75% of my salary if I can't work, contribution to gym fees, private medical insurance, shopping discounts.

Miggeldy · 12/01/2019 12:23

A kick up the arse, is about as much as we get.

miggeldysthepres · 12/01/2019 12:24

Free tea, coffee , biscuits and lunch ( proper meal loads of choices). Reduced school fees. Free car parking. Paid time off for emergencies, doctors etc

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 12/01/2019 12:25

We used to get free alcohol; technically when required but realistically after about 4pm and being drunk was still gross misconduct.

We also used to be able to order in food to the kitchen, usually cheeses and meats and that sort of thing, breakfast bars and the likes. Again it was technically unlimited and you could write down what you wanted for the next day but it was kept an eye on and it was expected that you didn't eat or order over your fair share.

We got free bacon or sausage sandwiches on Fridays too.

I don't think any of that was that uncommon for creative workplaces, although it was slowly all being removed for cost saving and it didn't really make up for the stress and the often long hours.

TheDarkPassenger · 12/01/2019 12:26

My last place we got free spa free golf heavily discounted massages and fine dining, heavily discounted wine (unique wine not echo falls 😂), free food, free drinks, discounted taxis and other random shite.

I’d rather shit in my own bed than work there again. They used the perks as a way to say ‘why aren’t you grateful?’ So they can treat you like shit on a daily basis.

RZNW · 12/01/2019 12:26

Public sector over here 🙋🏻‍♀️ Emergency Services to be precise.

Not a single perk. Not one.

A company loaned us a Starbucks style coffee machine for a trial run recently. We have to buy our own pods and it's only with us for 4 weeks anyway.

Short of that, we give our first 30 mins of overtime to the Crown and receive a fair few death threats. Living the dream! 😂

Babyroobs · 12/01/2019 12:26

My new job that I am starting soon is a 34.5 hour working week classed as full time, in service death payment, interest free loan to but travel season pass, great pension, private health insurance etc as well as some home working and 30 days annual leave after a few years.

miggeldysthepres · 12/01/2019 12:26

Hi miggeldy!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/01/2019 12:28

Public sector here (social worker). Absolutely no perks. The pension is not great, it's not final salary but career average and it doesn't kick in until i'm 67. We have to pay for everything ourselves including washing up liquid.

Oh, and we were forced to take UNPAID leave over Christmas so my pay has effectively been cut by 1.6%

I love my job but really dislike the way we are treated
