I like Daenerys but I’m hoping for Jon Snow to get his happy ever after, and Arya too :)

She surely asks them to bend the knee out of insecurity

Think about it Viserys believed all the bullshit that the common folk cried out for his return as their ruler

Dany knew that was a load of old shit

She knows no one is clamouring for the Targaryen era so she goes Bend The Knee to assert herself and her claim

If you can't inspire love inspire fear

Carlyrichards · 14/01/2019 18:20

One word: Cleganebowl. My money is on The Hound.

SweetSummerchild · 14/01/2019 18:21

Poor Sam is going to be crushed when he finds out how his brother died.

Totally. Plus, Sam is the one with all the ‘evidence’ that Jon’s birthright claim to the throne is stronger than Dany’s.

I think she made a mistake by roasting Dickon.

Shimy · 14/01/2019 18:44

Pls remind, who is Sam's brother again?

SweetSummerchild · 14/01/2019 18:45

Sam’s brother was Dickon Tary. Him and their father (Randyll - total arse) were incinerated by Dany for refusing to bend the knee after the loot train attack.

ABigBraclet · 14/01/2019 18:46

Not sure its insecurity. Bending the knee was what the first targaryans requested when they first set upon westeros. No one loved them either, but the targs were the rightful rulers having the upperhand of the power of dragonfire. It was a case of, look, bend the knee to us and you'll be spared a hell of a lot of unnecessary bloodshed. What's dany doing different from that? The westerosi people dont know or love her, thats true and they are wary of her because of her father, but those that do actually know her, especially the common folk, love her and testify to her uprightousness. The westerosi love will come after she has proved herself.

BartonHollow · 14/01/2019 18:50

I'm sure Sam loved Dickon BUT

His father took away his birthright because he wasn't good enough

Now he's the last Tarly standing and a ruler would have the power to release him and make him heir to the lands that were his right anyway

FadedRed · 14/01/2019 18:52

Slightly off topic: why didn’t Ned tell Cat who John really was? He trusted her. She wouldn’t have hated Jon had she known who he really was.
Ned was a bit thick, wasn’t he?

ABigBraclet · 14/01/2019 18:53

The thing with viserion is that he never proved himself by serving the people. He couldn't anyway as he didnt have the means to serve them on a large scale, but he was a petulant and spiteful little man.
Dany has built what she has from the ground up, all by herself and along the way has served the common people as best as she could.
The people paid lip service to her brother, but its genuine feelings for dany because she's proved herself to them.

She shouldn't have burnt dickon though. He was only saving face for the sake of his dads approval. His dad though was nasty. A bully, misogynist, hard.

Shimy · 14/01/2019 18:53

Sweet - I definitely remember that scene. Didn't know that was Sam's brother.

Holidayshopping · 14/01/2019 18:54

Isn’t Viserion the dragon?

Shimy · 14/01/2019 18:55

Barton - Sam's a good man though, a good man with a good sense of what's right Smile. He will likely still be very shocked and sad at the death of his kinsmen.

ABigBraclet · 14/01/2019 18:55

Fadedred - its because he was so bound by his honour. He made a promise to his sister to keep him safe, and ned was known throughout the 7 kingdoms as a man who was upright and trustworthy.

Shimy · 14/01/2019 18:56

Holiday -Grin YEP!

ABigBraclet · 14/01/2019 18:57

Viserys, sorry.

SweetSummerchild · 14/01/2019 18:58

Ned was a bit thick, wasn’t he?

Ned was blinded by his hero worship of Robert Baratheon. Robert hated anything to do with Rhaegar and probably would have killed Jon.

Ned made a huge number of bad decisions which had disastrous consequences for his wife and children, regardless of how ‘honorable’ he was. This was just one of them.

EwItsAHooman · 14/01/2019 19:06

Now he's the last Tarly standing and a ruler would have the power to release him and make him heir to the lands that were his right anyway

And Sam loves him mum and sisters, he'd probably like going back to live with them.

why didn’t Ned tell Cat who John really was? He trusted her. She wouldn’t have hated Jon had she known who he really was.

She might have been kinder to him but she'd have sold him over in a heartbeat to protect her own children. Imagine if she did know. Everything kicks off with Ned triggering the war of the Five Kings and the Lannisters have her daughters (well, Sansa because Arya had escaped but Cat didn't know that). She'd have sent a raven to Tywin quick-smart with the details of the secret offering to trade Jon for Sansa and Arya, although she'd have probably acted before then and traded Jon for Ned. Joffrey beheads Jon, Ned goes home and is angry with his wife, end of story.

SweetSummerchild · 14/01/2019 19:09

The whole ‘bend the knee’ business was really irritating but I blame D&D. The writing for the main characters was really inconsistent last season and Dany and Arya both seemed to flip flop between megalomaniac psychopaths and kind-hearted egalitarians. The only consistent character in season 7 was Cersei, and that’s really saying something!

Dany starts of massively entitled and princessy in the books, but is gradually realising that it’s a hell of a lot more work and responsibility than she ever bargained for.

LaurieMarlow · 14/01/2019 19:11

Ned was a bit thick, wasn’t he?

This is true. Or at the very least he was a crap player of the game of thrones. Almost everything he did in book/season 1 was dumb.

However, letting Cat believe JS was his bastard looks like a smart move from this vantage point. If she did t suspect his true parentage, she could never give it away. Keeping this secret was top priority for Ned.

However the trailer suggests there's a very different way of looking at it and I'm excited to find out about it.

EwItsAHooman · 14/01/2019 19:13

The trailer was interesting. Lyanna telling Ned to protect him (Jon) then Catelyn talking about him, then Ned telling him he has Stark blood. It all points to Jon finding out the truth about his parentage and there's a statue of him in the crypt. Only Starks get statues in the crypt so is he going to declare himself a Stark or is he going to say "fuck all y'all, I'm a Targaryen now". My money is on Stark. And did his statue look a person who is lot older than the girls' statues?

Shimy · 14/01/2019 19:18

I have a feeling this is all going to be a great big anti climax, rather like Downton Abbey and Merlin, dissapointing both of them.

Holidayshopping · 14/01/2019 19:19

Hopefully it will have a more satisfying conclusion than LostConfused.

BartonHollow · 14/01/2019 19:23

"Ned was blinded by his hero worship of Robert Baratheon"

Not really. If that was true he'd have given him Jon.

He understood his flaws well enough to promote two lies as fact

That Jon was his
That Lyanna Loved Robert

To the degree that he darent even trust his wife with the truth.

There is a story in the first book that there were constant rumours that Jon's mother was highborn and possibly Ashara Dayne - a noted beauty.

When Catelyn came to him in distress about them the rumours died and yet he STILL refused to tell her

Cat was supposed to marry Neds brother not Ned and therefore was always bitter that she wasn't first choice

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 14/01/2019 19:27

Pondering this on the way home tonight. I am wondering if one of Dany's dragons will die and the final battle will be Ice Dragon vs Fire Dragon.

I'd like Arya to survive. And Jon. But I'm not hopeful.

I also want Jaime to marry Brienne and Bronn to get the Iron Throne but there's no bleeding hope of that!

BartonHollow · 14/01/2019 19:33

Oh and I watched the Emergency Awesome video (YouTube)

He spotted something I didn't as I'm not quite that level of geek

The feather that falls to the floor in the trailer?

Robert places that on Lyanna's tomb in EPISODE ONE Shock

A sign that the Roberts Rebellion narrative is over
