to think that baby clothes sizes are huge!

Out of curiosity... when did your baby/babies grow in to their ‘newborn’ clothes?

My DS is 11 weeks old and still fits in to a handful of ‘tiny baby’ clothes. Newborn stuff is still a little baggy (and looks very cute!). ‘Up to one month’ is huge.

He was 5lbs when he was born, so quite tiny. He’s my only baby however so didn’t feel small as it’s all I knew. Now however he's still small but much bigger than a newborn!

The first thing anyone says STILL when they meet him is ‘oh my god he’s tiny!!’ which is true (but I secretly get bored of hearing it...).

What’s your experience? Anyone else find that baby clothes are massive? I guess it's so they get longer use out of them :)

HRTFT

My DS was 9lb 6 and not one single item of newborn fit him , first size was ok for the first couple of weeks but after that they're was not a chance. I was gutted bought some lovely bits lol Grin

I tried to convince myself that newborn was just small made , I guess not Grin

LadyGAgain · 10/01/2019 23:41

My 2 year old is just out of their 9-12 month top from Sainsbury's. And Asda baby sizes are made for little (adorable) chunks!

firsttimebabybirther · 10/01/2019 23:45

Please ignore my horrendously embarrassing spelling and grammar in that last post Blush

AornisHades · 10/01/2019 23:54

Feet were my problem with dd. Babygros fitted lovely but her toes were curled over.
She still has big feet as a 12 year old.

whatsthepointthen · 10/01/2019 23:58

This post really wasn't a stealth boast!

I dont think it was just saying I can see why people have thought it.

Penguin34 · 11/01/2019 08:56

I do think Tesco and next sizes come up slightly smaller

SoyDora · 11/01/2019 08:58

Next newborn is too small for my 7lbs 13oz 3 day old, he’s got quite long legs.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 11/01/2019 09:05

I have a babygro that my son first wore at 5 weeks and last wore at 25 weeks, which is quite nuts. It was footless though which helped

ZigZagZebras · 11/01/2019 09:09

At 5lb my first 2 were still in ting baby, think it was around 7lb they went into newborn and it was still a bit baggy, but fitted my third who was 6lb10 so think it depends on how long they are etc.
I found they zoomed through certain sizes but were in others for ages depending on when they had growth spurts.

Jackshouse · 11/01/2019 09:12

DD was never in new born but to a month lasted for 2 weeks.

reluctantbrit · 11/01/2019 09:14

Do not get so obsessed with sizes. Instead of looking at the age range look at the body length.

It will continue most of his childhood. DD is 11 now and wears 13-14 or the smallest adult size in some shops.

Buy what fits instead of fussing around.

FairfaxAikman · 11/01/2019 09:16

DS was 8lb 12 and was in newborn for a couple of weeks. He's on the 75th centile and at eight months is mostly in 9-12 months, some of which are getting snug.

BlackPrism · 11/01/2019 13:15

Well 5lb is small, especially as 10/11 lb babies are on the rise!

BlackPrism · 11/01/2019 13:17

@Soubriquet YOUR dD was 15lb?!?!

randomsabreuse · 11/01/2019 13:51

Looking at length would be great if all the companies had it on the labels. I've got some 0-3 up to 6lb that are longer than some up to 6.5lb from different companies. Very frustrating when you've just wrestled baby into a sleep suit to discover it is too short when you do the poppers up!

Soubriquet · 11/01/2019 14:30

BlackPrism no 5lb.. Blush

sayanythingelse · 11/01/2019 15:56

Sizes vary so much between shops. DD was 5lbs 14oz at birth and is still in 6-9 at nearly 13 mo. I think she fit in newborn vests until she was about 6 months old.

Yesterday she wore a cardigan from Boots that's 3-6 months and was still baggy on her Shock.

Lala503 · 11/01/2019 16:07

I found the opposite- clothes have always been too small.

DS was born very prematurely and weighed 2lb 13oz. From the day he was born he has just grown and grown- currently 8 months corrected age, and wearing age 12-18 months baby clothes!
But I was a big baby and my husband & his family are large, so I think he was always going to be a (gorgeous) chubster.

GahWhatever · 11/01/2019 16:12

I hear you OP.
Mine were both tiny.
With the first one I listened to the MW and barely bought new baby clothes but mostly 0-3 months as everyone said they grow out of newborn stuff so quickly.
Ha! My tiny firstborn was wearing 0-3 month babgros and shoes to play outside at nursery at 12 months old!

Sashkin · 11/01/2019 16:13

Depends a lot on the brand as well. H&M come up really big (DS is nearly 2, 50th centile, and still fits in 12-18mo even in a bulky cloth nappy). I always thought M&S and John Lewis ran true to size. White stuff were absolutely tiny.

JudasPrudy · 11/01/2019 16:14

Just make sure you check the weight/length of his clothes OP and don't just go by the size. Vests need to be loose to allow the nappy room to expand, you could be causing him discomfort if you're putting him in newborn clothes (which i think usually go up to 9lb if memory serves correctly) and he's above the weight limit.

Claudia1980 · 12/01/2019 02:12

The average weight of a baby born in recent year is 8lbs so newborn size would be fine for them.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 12/01/2019 02:31

DS is 4 months old, is already in 6-9 in some clothes, he was 10lb 11 at birth and went straight into 0-3, no faffing about with newborn or first size.

So technically YABU, but it's just own to the individual baby really!

Lauren83 · 12/01/2019 06:56

I found it the other way DS was 9lbs at 38 weeks and has always been a size above, he was 1 yesterday and has been in 18-24 month clothes for a while. That said I find H&M fit big and long which he is. I also get constant comments about his size

NoParticularPattern · 12/01/2019 07:02

My daughter was 8lb15 and she never fitted in anything smaller than 0-3. Might have got away with 0-1 vests but she’s so long she just doesn’t fit lengthwise in anything with feet. She’s now 11 months old and has been in 12-18 for a few months now. She can get away with 9-12 in dresses but leggings or babygrows she needs more length!
