to think that baby clothes sizes are huge!

Out of curiosity... when did your baby/babies grow in to their ‘newborn’ clothes?

My DS is 11 weeks old and still fits in to a handful of ‘tiny baby’ clothes. Newborn stuff is still a little baggy (and looks very cute!). ‘Up to one month’ is huge.

He was 5lbs when he was born, so quite tiny. He’s my only baby however so didn’t feel small as it’s all I knew. Now however he's still small but much bigger than a newborn!

The first thing anyone says STILL when they meet him is ‘oh my god he’s tiny!!’ which is true (but I secretly get bored of hearing it...).

What’s your experience? Anyone else find that baby clothes are massive? I guess it's so they get longer use out of them :)

My first baby was 6lbs 3oz at birth and dropped to 5lbs 10. Everyone had told me there was no point in buying newborn as they never fit so I bought all 0-3 months. Poor dd was absolutely swamped until I sent DH out for smaller things. Even newborn was too big for the first weeks.
Next baby was 2lbs heavier and still wore newborn for a little while.

whatsthepointthen · 10/01/2019 22:27

He would have ripped out of the new baby stuff like The Hulk

Grin this made me laugh.

I can see what people mean about it sounding abit like a boasting thread, as in my circle small babies are seen as a good thing, I even had a friend say she was going to make sure she goes into labour before 36 weeks as she wants a “small baby”

Paranormalbouquet · 10/01/2019 22:27

My 5week old is only 8lbs 6oz and newborn stuff is getting too small now. Can’t see how a 12lb baby fits into it!

codenameduchess · 10/01/2019 22:29

I was told mine would be a tiny baby before I was induced so panic bought a load of tiny baby clothes... she wasn't tiny (7lbs 6 and 25th centile) and they were so small she looked like she was hulking out. Newborn lasted 3/4 weeks and was in 9-12 months when she was around 6 months old but didn't look like a big baby next to others of the same age.

3 now, last check was right at top end of the centile charts and in 5/6 clothes from most stores, I think kids clothes are small fitting for most kids.

The tiny baby clothes have been handed down to a tiny treasures doll and fit that brilliantly!

Since2016 · 10/01/2019 22:30

What an odd thing to say. Your baby is small - avg is 7pounds ish. So below avg - therefore size ranges aren’t going to fit...

Mine never went into newborn. Straight into 0-3. At 9.11 that’s not surprising. Generally, we were in the next size up before she was that old. Stores differ too.

delilahbucket · 10/01/2019 22:31

My DS was 5.5lbs. He wasn't in an age matching size until around age 4. Now he's slim but tall and that is equally as challenging as they don't make clothes for normal size children anymore so even adjustable waists are too big on him. Like adult clothing, sizes have increased to accommodate a bigger population.

IfYouLikeALotOfChocolate · 10/01/2019 22:33

9.5lb born last week and newborn doesn’t fit. I think the variance in shape of babies doesn’t help - mine are looong babies so vests won’t fasten and the bodies of sleepsuits are too short. But also the variance on shop sizing - some clothes come up long and narrow and some are short and wide - makes it impossible to go by size label alone. As I was packing away the newborn clothes today I was still surprised at how some items labelled newborn are bigger than some labelled 0-3 and vice versa. Because obviously, what new parents need is to spend time trying to judge which clothes will fit their new babies regardless of the label size

Noodledoodlesandspud · 10/01/2019 22:33

My first 2 were huge so never wore Newborn outfits (my oldest wore one home from hospital but it wouldn't do up).

SchnitzelVonCrum · 10/01/2019 22:38

Oh God yes, my little boy was an 8lb’er but did drop quite a bit and struggled with feeding because of a tongue tie so he’s on the smaller side of average at 5 months, but we’ve found this all along. I bought a 0-3 coat in M&S on Tues as there’s no way the 3-6 would fit!! I always find things fit him closer to the upper age so not 0-3 didn’t fit until 3 months and 3-6 won’t fit until 6 months. Just from my experience Zara, Boden and White Company clothes are on the smaller side and H&M do 1-2 months which were a godsend for me when my DS had grown out of 1 month.

PleaseLetMummySleep · 10/01/2019 22:41

My newborn didn't fit into newborn clothes so I can't agree! Went straight into up to 1 month, then at 4 weeks was in 0-3, and was in 3-6 by about 10 weeks

Now at age 16 months he is going into age 2-3 clothes

Santasbigballbells · 10/01/2019 22:49

How is your 12lb baby wearing newborn?! My DD was 9lb born and never fitted in newborn, straight into up to one month. She’s 11lb now at ten weeks and is perfect in most of her 0-3 month stuff, but some of the bodysuits and sleep suits are getting a bit short. But my drier might be shrinking them because brand new ones still fit well.

tor8181 · 10/01/2019 23:01

we were the opposite both were woppers from day 1

tbh i feel like ive never had a "newborn" as both boys have been big since birth and just went bigger and bigger than their age

my 14 y old was in the Guinness World Records books at a few days old

he wasnt massively heavy at 8llbs but was 27.5 inches with massive feet

at 3 days old he was actually in our local paper as being the longest born at the hospital and having the biggest feet of a newborn in wales and the record went from there

about a hour after birth the midwife asked me could she measure his feet as they were the biggest she have ever seen,me being out of it (4 day labour and numerous drugs by this point)was yeah yeah go ahead,he came up as 7.5 inches

he was that long my parents had to rush out and buy 3-6 clothes as newborn didn't touch him, these i had to cut the feet out of and put on toddler socks

the next day/her shift(he was born at 1.30am) she(the mv) came in with her 20 month olds shoes and said can i try them on i was yeah ok,turned out a junior 3 was way to small, she reckoned a 6 or 7

when i came out days later the newspaper contacted me as the hospital contacted them about his length and feet

the paper came out did a report/photo shoot and it came out a few days later, clarks were there and he came up as a toddler 8
we even had free shoes for 6 months but as he wasnt walking we didnt really get many
he was a bit of celebrity as we live in rural wales and its a small village

months later i had a letter through the post, the paper put him forward to the GBOR and he won(could still be valid for all i know as we haven't heard anything since)

he started walking at 11 months and his very first pair of shoes was a junior 10,we had none of that toddler/first walking shoes it was straight in to trainers

he started school at 5 in a mans 5 and 4ft 3/4,he used to look so out of place
hes 14 now 6ft 1 and adult 12 but will be a 13 soon

8 y old was 8llb7 and 26 inches he was in 6 month clothes from birth but he was a very greedy baby as he was on 11 oz of extra hungry milk from birth every hour and used to put on 3-4 pound per week so used to outgrow clothes very quick

by 11 weeks i would say he was between 15-18 pounds,i think 9-12m

his feet wasnt small but no where near as big as oldest,he was a junior 3 at birth as i took him at 2 days old

hes now 8 and 5ft but 118 pounds size 5 shoe

they follow me for feet and legs as im 5ft 9 but 35 inch leg and mans 12 and have been since i was 11

dads 5ft6 29 leg and 8 shoe

Thetigerwhocameto · 10/01/2019 23:04

@whatsthepointthen I hope you told your 36 week wanting friend that she is a moron.

DD was a 33 weeker. The consultant said that of the 'late' prems the worst is 36 weekers as everyone just thinks they should trot along as normal. 37 weeks is term for a reason.

Sorry, mini rant. It annoys me when people suggest having a prem is great because 'you get a newborn for longer' 😡 but that's a whole other thread

GraysonCartier · 10/01/2019 23:10

@Thetigerwhocameto I feel exactly the same. My DS wasn't premature but he was small because he was very poorly. He still is and we are in and out of hospital a lot with him (and will be for the foreseeable). I don't like it when people say 'you're so lucky to have a small baby, they're so cute'

OP posts:
Jezzifishie · 10/01/2019 23:11

It felt like DD grew out of hers quickly, but she was a tall baby. They were always stretched on her legs, and really baggy everywhere else!

My Dad tells the story of how I was so little when I was born, they had to dress me in dolls clothes. I was premature and very poorly, but I assume you could get premature baby clothes in the 80s? Maybe you couldn't!

whatsthepointthen · 10/01/2019 23:13

@whatsthepointthen I hope you told your 36 week wanting friend that she is a moron

She wont listen, she said shes going to take castor oil and actually advised me to get some so mine “wouldnt be so big” Some people just cant be reasoned with, but wanting small babies is definitely a “thing.”

ItsQuietTime · 10/01/2019 23:16

Our daughter was under 7 lbs and all we heard for ages was "She's so tiny/small/dainty."

She's almost 9 months and still fits in 3 to 6 months. She's in a healthy weight percentile and consistently gains so we're not concerned.

As long as your son is gaining steadily then he's fine I think. Can always talk to a HV at a weigh in clinic though for reassurance.

GraysonCartier · 10/01/2019 23:17

@whatsthepointthen if I had another, I wouldn't actively wish for him/her to be 5lbs. I was terrified of taking him home as I thought I was going to break him. My friend had a 3lb baby - I can't imagine how scary that must be.

This post really wasn't a stealth boast!

OP posts:
ItsQuietTime · 10/01/2019 23:21

Wait is wanting a small baby really a "thing"? Other than wanting to spare your vagina during labour I don't get that.

@whatsthepointthen

"I can see what people mean about it sounding abit like a boasting thread, as in my circle small babies are seen as a good thing, I even had a friend say she was going to make sure she goes into labour before 36 weeks as she wants a “small baby”"

She is tempting fate, please come back and update us when she's 3 weeks overdue. 😂😏

Amanduh · 10/01/2019 23:23

My 2 yo has just gone in to 18-24 mo and some of those are still huge. He’s always been at least a size behid, was 8lb at birth and a good weight and height! Madness.

whatsthepointthen · 10/01/2019 23:25

Oh no it isnt that, its for the cuteness factor, apparently bigger babies are “easier” to give birth to according to her, winds me up when people say that as my 10lber certainly wasnt easy and ended up getting stuck and having to be pulled out.

Penguin34 · 10/01/2019 23:25

My little one was 5lb 6oz buts she's also quite petite if that make sense.
She's 18 weeks old and she's just gone into 0-3 today.
I would say she was in tiny baby till 9 weeks, newborn/first to 14 weeks and up to 1 month till 18 weeks.

She weighed at 12lb this week so she's quite heavy for her size I think, shes solid!

Penguin34 · 10/01/2019 23:26

It's nice to get so much use of of everything really

Penguin34 · 10/01/2019 23:27

People say to me 'wow she's strong holding her head up already!

Well she is 4 months old!

Thisimmortalcurl · 10/01/2019 23:32

I have had a mixture growth wise .. my first and third by 11 / 12 weeks were both over 12 pounds . My second although 8lb6 at birth wax and is at 21 a wee dinky soul .
Although you might be getting annoyed at folk saying your baby is tiny you shouldn’t imo . It’s because it’s such a short phrase and in my experience a one that others don’t really experience
Spend less time being pissed off . It’s not worth the energy
